    Courcel

Incredibly Domaine de Courcel has been owned by the same family for its entire 400 year history. Located near the village of Pommard they make some of the best reds in the Cote de Beaune, with stronger tannin and greater density than is typical for this region. This Burgundy estate has fans across the world.

    Vinous (92)

Good full red. Superripe, expressive nose offers redcurrant, iron, leather and smoky oak. Fat and sweet; shows a confectionery quality without coming off as heavy or cooked. Finishes with wonderful breadth and utterly lush, sweet tannins.

    Vinous (91+)

Good ruby-red. Reduced, inky nose hints at licorice. Then impressively rich and concentrated, with real power to the currant, iron and tobacco flavors; one senses the red clay soil here. This has the sheer stuffing (the wine is carrying 14.5% alcohol) to handle its serious, powerful tannins, which arrive late. There's a peppery nuance on the finish. Confuron says this will be at its best in 15 years-or drink it with truffles in 20 years. (Incidentally, I retasted the hugely rich, sappy 2003 version of this wine, and can report that it is in the process of closing down.)

    Vinous (93)

Good deep red. Very ripe, smoky nose showed mounting red fruits with aeration; ultimately much less extreme than the Fremiers. Then similarly huge in the mouth, with smoke and mineral notes complicated by an exotic stone fruit (peach, apricot) character. This silky, voluptuous wine offers superb depth of flavor and slowly mounting, superripe finishing flavors that saturate the palate. Best of all, it seemed to gain in freshness as it opened in the glass.

    Vinous (92)

Good deep red. Slightly roasted red fruits and dried spices on the nose and palate. Sweet, thick and mouthfilling; almost Rhône-like in its ripeness without coming across as heavy. Finishes with noble tannins, excellent length and surprising vinosity.

    Vinous (92-94)

Bright ruby-red. Deep, ripe aromas of black cherry and chocolatey oak, plus a high-toned whiff of sherry. Then large-scaled and aromatic in the mouth, conveying stronger terroir personality than the foregoing wines. Complex and fine-grained, with a positive trace of bracing bitterness. Chewy, chocolatey, well-integrated tannins take over the entire mouth on the back end. This nuanced, fine-grained wine finishes with a trace of dried herbs and has the structure to age. The yield here was just eight hectoliters per hectare, according to estate manager Yves Confuron.

    Decanter (95)

The best of the de Courcel reds in 2017, this comes from dense clay soils on the northern side of Pommard. Intense, scented and very rich, it has aromas of incense, white pepper and forest floor, with masses of dark, inky fruit, granular tannins and balancing freshness and acidity on the finish.

    Wine Spectator (92)

Toasty oak aromas lead into black cherry and plum notes, with hints of chocolate and spice. The beefy tannins show up on the finish and require time to mellow. This is a muscular red, with a long, mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2013 through 2027. 100 cases imported. -BS

    Vinous (92+)

Good bright red. Complex, ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, iron, minerals, spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The sweetest, supplest and most refined of these 2011s, offering lovely harmonious acidity to its red fruit, red licorice and mineral flavors. Really coats the mouth and vibrates on the long, firmly tannic finish, which features a late burst of ripe but lively red fruits. Winemaker Yves Confuron says the 2011s here have similar precision to the 2010s but more middle, although he believes that the wines have shut down following the September 2013 bottling.

    Decanter (94)

Big, bold, ferrous and rich, this is true to the domaine's aim to produce serious, slightly forbidding wines that take a long time to soften in bottle. Blood, iron and a butcher's shop full of guts and fresh meat, this needs a decade but will reward your patience.
