Comte de Vogue
About Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé
Possessing one of the richest and lengthiest histories of any Burgundian Domaine, Comte de Vogüé can in fact trace its origins as a winemaking entity back to 1450. Quite unusually for Burgundy, the estate remained under the ownership of the same family for generations, including through the female line of the family until Catherine Bouhier married Cerice-Melchior de Vogüé in 1766. Retaining ownership of the winery and its holdings throughout the French Revolution despite being exiled in England, the modern history and now-famous label began in earnest with the Comte Georges de Vogüé inheriting the property in 1925.
Currently under the imperious stewardship of estate manager Jean-Luc Pepin, vineyard manager Eric Bourgogne and truly masterful winemaker François Millet, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is at the height of its power, delivering some of the most wonderous, transcendent and utterly sublime expressions of Burgundy collectors could hope to experience.

The de Vogue 2006 Chambolle-Musigny – incorporating some of the young vines of Musigny plus non-cru parcels – smells alluringly of jellied red fruits, brown spices, candied citrus zest, white truffle, and iris. Sweetly-fruited and polished in texture, its bitter-sweet sense of herbal concentrate as well as it reserve of primary fresh fruit juiciness combine for a finish of refreshment, buoyancy, and invigoration that is – in a paradoxical but vintage-typical way – also caressing. You feel very comfortable with it, says Millet trenchantly of this wine and the vintage as a whole. Both floral and subtly marrowy meaty elements persist here as well. This should be a delight over the next half dozen years.Inc. GSTSG$3,977.96 -

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny is totally finessed and haunting. This shows tons of harmony in its crushed flowers, hard candy and berries, all of which flow gracefully towards the saline, mineral-drenched finish. With time in the glass the layers of fruit flesh out with notable beauty and elegance. The Chambolle is a classic, translucent wine in 2008, and will delight readers who prefer the nuanced side of Burgundy.Inc. GSTSG$3,476.56 -

De Vogüé's 2009 Chambolle-Musigny was even better, as the vintage is so well suited to near-term drinking, especially at the village level. The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny is a pretty, accessible wine, but today I get the impression the 2011 may be headed for a period of dormancy. The relaxed, easygoing personality of the vintage is in evidence, but the fruit isn't as generous or resonant as it was a years ago. Full red-ruby. A ripe bowl of black cherries, blueberries and spices on the nose. Boasts a penetrating yet restrained sweetness and a superb balance of rich texture and fresh acidity. Superb texture for village wine. The tannins are serious but plush and nicely enrobed by the wine's strong material. Really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate and build on the finish. A bit of a mysterious wine as there is so little of it and wasn't even made for 20 years while the new vines were settling in, this is always a treat to taste. This is the seventh commercialized vintage with the revitalized vineyard, and it is utterly charming. Starting with match strike and Comice pear, the palate doubles down with riper flavors – including tropical fruits – and plentiful fresh herb lift. The well-knit acidity meshes seamlessly with the medium body lightly brushed with classy oak. It finishes long, dry and refreshing. 2023-34Inc. GSTSG$1,747.90 -

The 1986 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Blanc Grand Cru comes straight from the domaine. It has a gorgeous honeysuckle, quince and nutmeg scented bouquet that leans towards the Rhône in style (a trait I have discerned in recent vintages). There is just a hint of baking powder in the background. The palate is well balanced and harmonious with notes of Nashi pear, Vervain tea and acacia honey, slightly viscous on the finish with moderate definition. This is a seductive white Musigny that could give many more years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.Inc. GSTSG$1,237.04 -

This wine demands another 6-7 years of cellaring. Oddly, about three years ago it was giving signs of maturing quickly, but it has now completely shut down. The Bordeaux-like, saturated dense ruby/purple color is followed by a tight-fisted nose and flavors of black fruits, underbrush, minerals, smoke, and new oak. Although extremely concentrated, the wine is broodingly backward, and not fun to drink ... yet. This loaded effort should prove to be one of the longest-lived red Burgundies made in the last twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.Inc. GSTSG$1,846.36 -

Wealthy collectors should not miss the opportunity to see whether the 1991 equals or surpasses the 1990 Musigny-Vieilles Vignes made at the Comte de Vogue. The saturated, dense purple color is magnificent. The big, yet unformed bouquet of framboise, cassis, vanillin, and minerals suggests the wine is loaded. It is. Powerful, rich, concentrated, and marvelously clean and pure, this irrefutably impressively endowed, large-scaled red burgundy exhibits a Medoc-like austerity and structure, as well as a squeaky clean, international style. It will be interesting to see what develops over the next 15-20 years. Do not drink it before the turn of the century; it should last an uncommonly long time for modern day burgundy. Very good deep red-ruby. Black cherry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice, minerals, shoe polish, mint and white pepper on the nose. Extremely unyielding today in the middle palate, and dominated by its rather large structure. Exotic hints of citrus fruit keep the flavors bright and sharp. Then extremely long and authoritative on the back end. A wine of great potential, but it's all nose and finish today. May ultimately merit a considerably higher score.Inc. GSTSG$21,165.58 -

Saturated ruby-red, the darkest of these '99s. Knockout nose of black raspberry, violet, minerals and spices; complex and vibrant. Large-scaled but fine, with lovely verve and lift. An extravagantly spicy and notably ripe yet very fresh nose offers up a very pretty mix of both red and black currant aromas that are beginning to display the initial hints of secondary development while being trimmed in discreet hints of wood and menthol. The beautifully elegant and gorgeously textured flavors exude a lovely minerality before culminating in a rich, round and utterly delicious finish that delivers excellent persistence. This is not especially big or dense as de Vogüé Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. As flamboyantly sweet as this wine is today, it's most remarkable for its power, definition, energy and cut. The tannins are still a bit youthfully spiky but this extremely backward wine finishes with superb thrust, grip and persistence. It's hard to imagine that this wine won't gain in texture and complexity over the next 20 to 30 years of aging in a cold cellar. In BondSG$5,030.00 -
