The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a primal, simple bouquet that struggles to get past the honeyed fruit, the aromatics overwhelmed by the growing season. The palate is slightly honeyed on the entry with notes of mango, passion fruit and a touch of spice, suggesting that there might have been some botrytis in the vineyard. This is not unattractive but falls short of other Corton-Charlemagnes of this vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 30 closure)

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is very concentrated on the nose, offering scents of citrus fruit, honeysuckle and white peach; a little grilled walnut comes through with time. Maybe it comes across a tad New World in style. The palate is balanced with ripe citrus fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Saline and taut on the finish, this just needs a few years to meld together. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is quite reduced on the nose, becoming difficult to dislodge. The palate is less reductive than on the nose, well balanced with a spicy entry, a dab of stem ginger and orange zest on the finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from 1.2 hectares of vines in Les Longuettes. Matured in 35% new oak, it has a perfumed nose of yellow fruit, nectarine and peach skin aromas. The palate is well balanced with a light pineapple and passion fruit opening and well-judged acidity. Very harmonious, with a gentle landing on the finish. Maybe it is missing some tension and nerve, but the flavors are irresistible.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a dense, earthy bouquet that feels broodier than its peers at the moment, although there seems to be good fruit in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, more foursquare and conservative than others this year, though with decent depth and an understated, quite elegant earthy finish. Not quite matching its performance from barrel, nevertheless, a respectable Clos de Vougeot to enjoy over the next 10 years. Tasted September 2016.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pretty and pure bouquet, the oak here deftly integrated and allowing the dark cherries, cranberry and raspberry scents to flourish. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins framing the pure confit-like red fruit, just a splash of balsamic towards the finish lending another welcome dimension. I suspect that this will mature with style and panache. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a composed bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, tobacco, forest floor, a touch of wild mint and much more clarity than its peers. Fleshy, ripe and beautifully balanced, the palate is medium-bodied and supple, building succinctly toward the focused and complex finish. Wow...where did this come from??? Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Domaine du Clos Frantin has parcels in the top and bottom of the Clos. The combination makes for a vibrantly intense palate with excellent density. The blueberry coulis and forest berry core are shaped by silky, caressing tannins and bracing acidity. While built for the long-term, this should be accessible fairly early, too. 2024-40

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a competent, well-defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and earthy aromas. The medium-bodied palate is edgy in style, presenting fine tannin, well-judged acidity and a splash of balsamic that lends tension toward the sustained finish. This seems to improve in the glass, and that bodes well for the future. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the lieu-dit of Les Champs Traversins, has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, loamy/sous-bois scents and a touch of wilted iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, crisp acidity and a lightly spiced finish. This is a well-crafted Echézeaux from Bichot/Clos Frantin, and it should give 15–20 years’ drinking pleasure, possibly more.

A very elegant and refined Echezeaux that nimbly moves over your palate. Underplayed power and very fine tannins make this a shy beauty, but if you give it time and attention then you will be amply rewarded. Very silky and delicate, long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

A pungent nose is presently composed of mild reduction and green tea with a few disparate spice elements lurking in the background. The muscular, serious and powerful medium-bodied flavors possess excellent depth of material that coats the palate on the very firmly structured, long and balanced finale. This has everything it needs to be first-rate as the tannins are mature and well-integrated and the balance is impeccable.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru seems to have been born to embarrass my rather tepid reaction to this wine from barrel. Wow! This has me smitten. It offers a very floral, seductive bouquet with pressed violet petals liberally scattered over the black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, and just a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. This is very cohesive, harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, with a light touch of blood orange and brown spices that impart complexity on the finish. Excellent. A relatively deeply pitched nose offers plenty of both floral and spice elements along with notes of plum, dark cherry and a touch of Asian-style tea. As is usually the case there is excellent volume and a taut muscularity to the sappy broad-shouldered flavors that flash superb depth and persistence. Note well though that this classic example is definitely built-to-age and is going to need at least most of a decade to be approachable. Recommended.

(from a large 1.76 ha parcel). Here too there is enough wood to notice but not to intrude on the exceptionally spicy and overtly floral-suffused nose of dark currant and plum. There is outstanding intensity, muscle and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract on the sappy, mouth coating, robust and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. Much more subtle wood sets off overtly spicy aromas of cassis, black cherry and violet scents. The wonderfully seductive flavors possess a velvety and caressing texture while delivering sneaky good length on the firm but balanced structure. This is inviting but serious and it should repay up to a decade of cellaring. Worth checking out.
