Bouchard Père & Fils
Founded in 1731, Bouchard is one of the most long-standing and important producers in Burgundy. Since their founding, they have been assembling a collection of some of the best Cote d'Or vineyards, including 12 Grand Crus and no less than 74 1er Crus.
With more prestige and history than most, Vinous's Neal Martin has praised them in the past because their wines are "well priced compared to others". As a grower, producer and negociant, it is undeniable that Bouchard Père et Fils has played a significant role in the history of Burgundy but they have now shed their negociant tag as their new owner Artémis Domaines, who also own the likes of Château Latour and now Eisele Vineyard in Napa, have a policy of wishing only to make wines from vineyards which they own.

Healthy dark red. Cool aromas of black cherry and stony minerality. Juicy and penetrating, conveying lovely definition and energy to its currant, mineral and spicy oak flavors. Finishes savory and long, with more refined tannins than Bouchard's bottlings from the Côte de Beaune. Yields on the Côte de Beaune were generally very low in 2014, noted winemaker Frédéric Weber, but the wines from the Côte de Nuits are more generous and more classic.Inc. GSTSG$1,863.25 -

Medium deep lemon. The nose only barely suggests what is to come. The Montrachet shows massive opulence up front with golden fruit and peaches, then a wall of tension, then suddenly it seems to stop, only to start again and continue on the second half of its journey. A little hard to read in its extreme youth, but I suspect that this will make a very fine Montrachet. Amazing length, all registers of fruit. Drink from 2033-2045. Tasted Oct 2024.Expected Price RangeSG$3,945 - SG$4,820 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)
(5 Star Wine) Fine pure lemon yellow. The bouquet starts off rather reserved. A suggestion of immense weight, certainly some new oak, but waiting for the fruit and the personality of the wine to emerge. Now some coconut and the feeling that the wine is about to release its magic. Superbly suave on the palate, more lifted than I expected and still the main core of the wine does not want to be touched. A fine mineral acidity at the finish but still wait and see. Only right at the end does it all start to kick in. A wine of immense density for the very long-term future. Retasting the glorious Cabotte reinforces the majesty of this Montrachet. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. GSTSG$7,475.72 -

The 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru has an elegant bouquet that opens in the glass with crushed stone and light oily/resinous scents, nuanced yet focused with glimpses of tropical fruit though it never impedes. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, precise and mineral-driven. There is an understated element in this "Monty" that is very appealing and it feels reassuringly persistent on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$9,095.40 -

Hailing from the Puligny side on the upper slopes between DRC and Ramonet, this sublime wine has incredible freshness and a dazzling aromatic profile. Cinnamon and clove blend with pear core, chamomile, sweet orchard fruit and crushed rocks. Vague chalkiness adds compelling texture to the long finish. 2025-40Inc. GSTSG$7,895.37 -

Bouchard’s holding here is superb: 0.90ha on the edge of the Puligny side at midslope between Ramonet and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 2019, Bouchard emphasised the richness by picking this parcel last. Ripe apples, white flowers and even a touch of honey make their appearance on the nose, while the texture on the palate is unctuous and deep without being heavy. There is still enough freshness to keep this lively through the intensely long finish.Inc. GSTSG$5,112.58 -

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose, although it is nothing to get too worried about. I think it has exceptional mineralité covered up by its youth. The medium-bodied palate is taut, fresh and quite saline, with a fine bead of acidity and some vanilla-y oak toward the very saline finish, though that will be eaten with bottle age. There is outstanding precision on the aftertaste, and that seems to be accentuated with aeration. I gave this a tepid reaction from barrel, but here in bottle, it received my highest score out of over two hundred 2017s. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.Inc. Pale straw-yellow. Very reticent scents of peach, pear and spearmint are less forthcoming than those of the Chevalier-Montrachet bottlings. Fat, saline and slightly disjointed in the early going; in a very rich but adamantly dry style. Shows full ripeness supported by penetrating acidity but this infant is not yet expressive or particularly complex. Strong minerality and building acidity on the tactile back end will require time to harmonize with the wine's fruit.Inc. GSTSG$7,034.27 -

Healthy bright yellow. Aromas of apple, smoky minerals, white pepper and resin. Very pale yellow. Aromas of mirabelle, apple, spices, menthol and white truffle, lifted by a whiff of lime blossom. Juicy and rich but extremely discreet today, with ripe apple and spice flavors coming across as fully ripe but classically dry. There's an almost exotic marzipan note on the back end but strong acidity is keeping the wine under wraps. This will need at least seven or eight years of cellaring to begin to deliver on its considerable potential.Inc. GSTSG$4,503.84 -

Urgent, exotic aromas of peaches in syrup, dried apricot and papaya. Dense and firm but very closed; distinctly exotic flavors similar to the aromas. Two parcels – one in the upper reaches that gives lemon zest aromatics and one in the bottom in the old quarry that contributes saltiness – combine into a generous, one-hectare holding.
