Armand Rousseau
Usually mentioned in the same breadth as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy, Armand Rousseau has established itself as a legendary producer owning mostly Grand Cru vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin.
Born in 1884 to a family deeply entrenched in the wine trade, Armand Rousseau inherited several plots and the current domaine building, one of the oldest in Gevrey-Chambertin, as part of his wedding in 1909. After acquiring more plots in Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche and Chambertin in the late 1910s and 1920s, the domaine became one of the first in Burgundy to bottle his own wine. Rousseau’s wines were also amongst the first to hit the shores of the United States after the Prohibition, and his focus on exporting his wine is shared by his son Charles, who took over the reins in 1959 after Armand was unfortunately killed in a car accident. Today, the domaine is run by Charles’s son, Eric, who is also the winemaker.

Medium bright red. Spicy black cherry, with hints of licorice and game and good floral lift. Sweet and pure, with juicy acidity framing the spicy red fruit and mineral flavors. There are vineyard-typical nuances of leather and game, but this is in a rather elegant style, and suppler at this stage than I would have expected from a 2008.Inc. GSTSG$7,816.00 -

The 2009 Mazis-Chambertin is a gorgeous, complete wine that reveals considerable elegance and complexity in its vibrant fruit. This elegant, mid-weight Mazis boasts incredible class, harmony and finesse in the way it shows the multiple facets of its personality with time in the glass. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.Inc. GSTSG$1,960.81 -
(1x75cl) 2011Vinous (91-93)
Good bright, deep red. Wild, vibrant nose offers black cherry, black raspberry, minerals and spices; conveys a small-berry feel. At once dense and juicy; more masculine than the Charmes-Chambertin but also sappy and fined-grained. In a more backward style but already conveys excellent soil accuracy. Finishes with serious but well-buffered tannins and strong soil tones.Inc. GSTSG$1,415.81 -
(6x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin, matured in second-fill barrels, has a refined bouquet that is not a million miles away from the Charmes-Chambertin at the moment, but very precise and focused. The palate is very well balanced with tensile tannins and a keen thread of acidity: vibrant and shimmering in the mouth. With plenty of energy on the finish, this is a superb Mazis-Chambertin for the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$7,171.55 -

A rich style, until the firm structure of vibrant acidity and dusty tannins reveals itself, supporting plenty of cherry, black currant, tobacco and mineral flavors. The essence of black currant lingers on an ethereal frame. Best from 2023 through 2042.Inc. GSTSG$20,336.04 -
(3x75cl) 2018Jancis Robinson (18)
Much darker in fruit character than the Charmes-Chambertin was at first but not yet savoury. A delicate dustiness of stones. Chewy on the palate though the tannins seem to be infused with fruit, and there’s a flash of freshness. The finish has a lightly sour note to balance the sweetness of fruit.Inc. GSTSG$4,493.76 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2019 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru is clearly a step up from the Charmes-Chambertin, offering deeper and more intense red fruit, rose petal and undergrowth aromas. There is also a more tangible marine influence at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with very good structure. Elegant and poised toward the finish, which leaves hints of tobacco and truffle on the aftertaste. Superb. Quintessentially Rousseau.Inc. GSTSG$1,835.82 -

The 1980 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru continues to shine on the nose with satisfying vigour considering vintage and age, comely scents of red cherry, desiccated orange peel, subtle fungal and irony notes crescendo with aeration. The palate is fresh and harmonious, built around perfectly pitched acidity and a pliant, naturally, fully mature finish that still exudes mineralité. Add to the canon of exceptional 1980 red Burgundies. Tasted at the Rousseau Ruchottes vertical in September 2013.Inc. GSTSG$5,744.19 -

Fresher, deeper red. Much more complex aromas of black cherry, raspberry, leather, game, herbs and spices. Suave, silky and concentrated; fresher than the Clos de la Roche thanks to harmonious acids. Really seamless texture. Finishes with well-buffered tannins, very good grip and strong fruit.Inc. GSTSG$3,422.49 -

The 1988 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru shows considerable degradation in colour. The bouquet is autumnal, with vestiges of red cherries and tangible marine and moorland scents, and background orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied and has a lilting quality, but there is grip here, quite chalky in texture and obviously with less flesh than either the 1985 or 1990, so you have to accept its brittle finish. Yet there is vigour and poise from start to finish, conveying a sense of class and sophistication. Tasted at the Rousseau Ruchottes vertical in September 2013.Inc. GSTSG$2,685.30 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)
Medium red-ruby. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of red berries, spices and minerals. Dense, silky and sweet; a bit more harmonious, complex and perfumed at this early stage than the Clos de la Roche. Finishes with ripe tannins, plenty of verve and sneaky persistence.Inc. GSTSG$2,979.96 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (90)
The 2001 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is fully mature on the nose, with ferrous red fruit, quite light, scents of bacon fat and mortadella emerging with time. The palate has a grainy entry, again quite ferrous, although juxtaposed against the superior '02, this lacks a bit of flesh and feels attenuated towards the finish. Drink in the near future.Inc. GSTSG$4,332.53 -

Medium cherry-red. Deep, complex, expressive aromas of red fruits, smoke, earth and underbrush. Sweet, fat and smooth but with a medicinal reserve to its black cherry and mineral flavors. Conveys a strong impression of saline soil tones. The Clos de la Roche seems riper but this is more minerally and taut.Inc. GSTSG$2,266.01 -

From east-facing, forty year old vines, this doesn't always get the plaudits that some Rousseau wines receive, but it's an amazing wine. There are two types of limestone in the vineyard here (yellow and white) and together they make this is a very sappy, chalky, refreshing wine, an impression that's enhanced by the acidity of the wine. Subtle, sweet and silky, with a tangy, mouthwatering finish.Inc. GSTSG$3,774.47 -

The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot.Inc. GSTSG$1,715.56 -

The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is not to be outdone by the 2016. It has a stunning bouquet with mineral-laden red fruit, very focused and shimmering with almost nascent energy. The palate has exquisite balance so that it feels almost nonchalant in style. Slightly grainy tannins frame the dark berry fruit, leading to quite a weighty and authoritative finish that suggests a long road ahead. Magnificent.Inc. GSTSG$6,307.54 -

The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is much more introspective on the nose compared to the Clos de la Roche or Mazy, displaying dark berry fruit, loam and blackcurrant pastilles. Maybe not quite the mineralité of previous vintages? The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind and allspice on the entry. Showing fine weight, there's a little sinew within this cuvée and a tobacco-tinged finish. Quite a "serious" 2021 from Rousseau - I am fascinated to see how this will show once in bottle.Inc.
