James Suckling (100)

A complex, restrained and deliciously austere cabernet franc with damp earth, oyster shells, blueberries, thyme, rosemary and mushrooms. Super serious and chalky on the palate with lots of dissolved, minerally-textured tannins. Very long and uncompromising! An incredible cabernet franc from Gualtallary by Alejandro Vigil. Extremely pure, mineral and seductive. A fabulous cabernet franc that grows on the palate with remarkable tension and texture. I’d want to drink a bottle now even it can hold extremely well.

95% Syrah, 5% Viognier, vineyards at 950 m above sea level. Aged for 12 months in a mixture of 650- and 500-litre used French oak. Spectacular and intense dark fruit on the nose! Blackcurrant, blackberries, cassis, violets, smoke and minerality. On the palate, it is rich and deep but not massive. It has mouth-watering acidity, ripe tannins, and elegant oak integration. I find this vintage more balanced than previous ones. The wine has precise fruit expression. 2018 has been the greatest year for this wine. (FC)

Vinous (93)

The 2001 is a sultry and flirtatious vintage of Pepe’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne. Dark and a bit murky at first, it takes nearly an hour to blow off a musky, almost wooly mineral and animal-toned air; however, beneath it all, there are depths of tobacco, cherry sauce, scorched earth and a mentholated, herbal freshness that adds a wonderful lift. This soft, nearly-fleshy wine finds a lovely harmony through a mix of nervous acidity and citrus-tinged red fruits that add a highly energetic and almost-juicy feel. Blood orange nuances and a burst of inner sweetness mix with an inner sensation of wet autumn leaves (I know, I know, but it’s Pepe), as the 2001 finishes completely resolved, long and with a hint of balsamic spice that lingers on and on. While it takes a little work to unlock the 2001’s charms, good luck not devouring the entire bottle once it’s opened.

Vinous (97)

The 2010 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne is a total showstopper with its deep, dark, purple, red color. The intense bouquet blends fresh plums with black raspberries, sweet peppery curry, tobacco, leather and balsamic spice. It flows across the palate in silken waves, communicating elegance at the start. Within moments, a tart burst of cranberry and sour cherries combines with nervous acidity to create a juicy impression with riveting tension. The 2010 is rich and potent; it leaves a staining of concentration while remaining incredibly fresh. The balanced bite of tannin that remains creates a classically dry finale. A minute goes by, and dried citrus rinds, hints of coffee grinds and black licorice are still present. This is easily the most moving experience that I’ve ever had with an Emidio Pepe Montepulciano. The 2010 is in a gorgeous place today and has a very bright future.

Vinous (94)

The 2014 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne totally captivates with an exotic mix of musky red currants, allspice, dusty rose and a touch of forest floor that I find wildly attractive. It’s soft and enveloping on the palate, without a hard edge in sight, casting citrus-tinged berries across a core of brisk acids. Savory herbal tones come forward toward the close. This finishes structured and long, yet the tannins are sweet. The mouth is left watering for more as a mineral tinge and wild strawberry hints slowly taper off. The cool and rainy vintage helped produce a unique expression of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano, but one that is overdelivering at the moment.

Given the price of some Chilean icons these days, Coyam remains one of the best value reds in the country, right up there with the country's top red blends. Based on Syrah and Carmenère with the remaining 19% made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Malbec, Carignan, Tempranillo and Mourvèdre, this is wonderfully detailed and complex. Racy and mineral, with scented oak, mint, wild herb and sweet spice undertones and a core of inky damson and black cherry fruit. 2022-30

I tasted three components of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage Les Trois Chênes—maybe four, as Darnaud hadn't yet decided on whether the last one would be included in this cuvée or bottled separately as Au Fil du Temps. The blend should reflect a balanced blend of floral, stemmy notes, bright red cherries and notes of dark-skinned fruit and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it should drink well on release and for up to a decade. The final sample, aged in second use François Frères barrels, stood out for its suave, silky texture, smoky notes, vibrant raspberry fruit and long finish. If Darnaud bottles it separately, don't hesitate to snap it up.

Incredibly focused aromas of lifted black cherries and dark chocolate-coated violet creams dominate, before the concentrated, mouthcoating blackcurrant fruit pervades the palate. However, it is the pure energy of the wine, along with the harmonious concentration of fruit and freshness, and the fine yet pertinent tannins that is really impressive here. This is a truly lovely, powerful yet balanced Saint Joseph.

Punchy minerals cut through the creamy lemon and limey citrus, almost like licking wet stones! Some green apples, too. Steely, with a hint of white flowers and white almond. Very transparent and vertical but this is not a typical full-bodied chardonnay, it is rather linear, tense and electric. Sharpened minerality lingers in a lengthy, mineral finish. The 2023 Las Pizarras Chardonnay represents another benchmark iteration of this bottling. It fermented and aged in 300- and 400-liter barrels, with 12% being new, and it underwent partial malolactic conversion. It opens with a crystal-clear nose of stone fruits, white flowers and citrus zest, enlivened by an oceanic freshness. The 2023 Pinot Noir Las Pizarras comes from Quillota, about 12 kilometers from the cold Pacific waters of the Humboldt Current. The 2023 underwent cold maceration before fermenting with 2% whole clusters, followed by 12 months of aging in 400-liter barrels (55% new). Purple in hue, it offers aromas of blood orange peel, pomegranate, a hint of iodine, and rosehip, with delicate reduction adding complexity. The palate is lined with fine, slightly compact tannins and high acidity, lingering with a soft, powdery texture. This is a beautiful coastal wine, finely calibrated between freshness and texture.

The 2023 Las Pizarras Syrah stands out as one of Chile's most aromatically exotic and intense examples of Syrah, beginning with an alluring bouquet of black fruits, grilled meats, incense, sandalwood and purple flowers. The palate is exceptionally dense, concentrated and taut, culminating in a lifted, multidimensional finish that strikes a midpoint between rich, savory and refreshing. Similar to my experience with the 2022 iteration of this wine, the nose here continuously evolves, revealing an increasingly floral and perfumed complexity. It fermented with 15% whole clusters and matured for 16 months in 60% French barrels and 40% Austrian foudre.

It contains two bottles of each:

2x75cl Polysipine - 98+ points - Jeb Dunnuck

2x75cl Sine Fine - 98 points | Jeb Dunnuck

100 points | Jeb Dunnuck (Perihelios)

One of two perfect wines in the lineup of 2018s, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Perihelios comes from Thomas Rivers Brown and is another seamless, elegant, yet powerful wine that’s just a joy to taste. Cassis, blackberries, tobacco, graphite, licorice, and a kiss of iron define this incredible beauty, and it's full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible finish. Coming mostly from the Upper Range Vineyard and brought up in new barrels, it has ample up-front appeal given its balance, purity, and texture, yet there's no shortage of tannins, and it's going to evolve gracefully for 20-25 years or more.

98+ points | Jeb Dunnuck (Polysipine)

Made by Philippe Melka and a blend of sites, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Polyspline is all Cabernet Sauvignon that saw a small amount of barrel fermentation and aging in 88% new French oak. It's the most structured, backward, and in need of bottle age of the trio and has a dense purple hue to go with powerful notes of blackcurrants, tobacco, licorice, spicy oak, and graphite. Full-bodied on the palate, it's a powerhouse of a wine that has a great mid-palate, building, substantial tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be forgotten for at least 4-5 years but will have decades of longevity.

98 points | Jeb Dunnuck (Sine Fine)

Coming from the talented Benoit Touquette, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sine Fine offers more blue fruits as well as lots of floral, violet, iron, spicy wood, and lead pencil-like aromatics. Another exuberant, incredibly sexy wine under the Fairest Creature label, it’s full-bodied and has just about perfect tannins, remarkable purity of fruit, and a gorgeous finish. It's already impossible to resist, yet I've no doubt this will evolve for 20-25 years or more. The purity of fruit as well as the tannins in this wine are exceptional.

James Suckling (97-98)

A sleeping giant! Incredibly complex structure with enormous earthy depth, the sweet fruit really coming through in the spectacular finish. Wild energy! Long term stuff, but the aftertaste is incredible.

James Suckling (96-97)

Quite a shy nose, but on the palate this is so dense without the slightest hint of heaviness. All red fruits with an almost lemony freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. Great potential!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90)

Just bottled. A robust and refreshing purple colour. A little burnt rubber reduction straight after bottling. Plenty of fruit here on the palate, raspberry seedless, plenty of energy, and a very good fruit acid balance. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Nov 2024.
