There is something about stark and beautiful places being the perfect locations for growing vines and nowhere is this more evident than Aragón, in northeastern Spain. Based in the Valdejalón IGP, Bodegas Frontonio was only founded in 2010 by rising star Ferando Mora MW but has already been making serious waves in the Spanish wine scene.

Already garnering effusive praise from both the Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez and Jancis Robinson MW, their wines have been going from strength to strength with each passing vintage.

Crafting premium Garnacha, at a very reasonable price, from their 240 year old cave in the village of Alpartir, they have cemented themselves 'right at the top of the hierarchy in Aragón' (WA).

Their high altitude Frontonio Supersónico 2018 comes from a small two hectare plot of old vines planted at 1,030 metres above sea level. Scoring 94+ points from the Wine Advocate, they are only able to produce tiny quantities, with only 700 cases made in 2018.

The combination of the high altitude and limiting the alcohol to 13.5% abv means Frontonio achieve 'great freshness' with this 'really aromatic and expressive' (WA) beauty. Juicy, tasty, subtle and elegant with very fine tannins, this is a 'high-altitude Garnacha of finesse' (WA) that is drinking wonderfully now but will cellar up to 2027.

Released at just £115 per case IB, the Frontonio Supersónico 2018 showcases Mora's winemaking prowess beautifully, coaxing serious finesse from this cooler Mediterranean climate. This is a Garnacha that all cool-climate wine lovers need to be trying.
