Vinous (95)A sexy, savory and superlative Pinot Noir. Leave your preconceptions of Marlborough Pinot in the same place as your corkscrew (it's a screwcap) when you open this wine. It has delightful clarity and grace as well as an assured presence. The Thomsons have included 40% whole cluster in this fermentation, and that's detectable in lifted aromatics that are reminiscent of violet, spice and green herbs. Fine chalky tannins on the perfumed finish. |

Only founded in 2013, Blank Canvas has shot to fame, becoming one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries by making some of the best value, small production, cool-climate wines money can buy.
While their Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have been turning heads, it is their reds which have won the hearts of many, with Jancis Robinson MW going as far to say they have produced 'the best Marlborough Pinot I have tasted'.
A wine that has fast become a Cru client favourite among Kiwi Pinots, we have the new 2017 vintage of the Blank Canvas 'Upton Downs' Pinot Noir. Scoring triple 95 points from Vinous's Rebbeca Gibb MW, The Real Review's Bob Campbell MW and Cameron Douglas MS, this newest release of their single-vineyard 'Upton Downs' is 'a sexy, savoury and superlative Pinot Noir' (VN).
This is a wine where you should 'leave your preconceptions of Marlborough Pinot' (VN) at the door. An 'appealing and distinctive wine' (BC), the inclusion of 40% whole cluster fruit is 'detectable in lifted aromatics' (VN), reminiscent of violet, spice and green herbs. While it is a Pinot that is drinking wonderfully now, it 'should age very well' (BC) if you can keep your hands off it.
Classified as a '5 star' estate by Campbell, Blank Canvas was founded by Matt and Sophie Thompson. The couple have made a remarkable impression on the wine world in such a short time due, in part, to their near unparalleled experience.
Since the mid-1990s, the winemaking consultant Matt has completed over 50 vintages with various wineries in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, becoming a winemaker 'steeped in the best of both burgundy and New Zealand' (JR). Announced last week, Sophie herself is now New Zealand's most recent inductee into The Institute of Masters of Wine. It is obvious to see why Blank Canvas is today producing an exciting array of pure, balanced and refined wines.
Released today at just £140 per case IB, it is obvious to see why the Blank Canvas 'Upton Downs' Pinot Noir 2017 is a hit every vintage. A delectable, affordable and flat out gorgeous Pinot from one of the most exciting winemaking couples at just over £23 per bottle IB, what more could you want.
