Sebastián Zuccardi has become one of the most reputable winemakers in Argentina with accolades from all major critics citing the estate as among 'the top wineries of the country' (Wine Advocate).

A winemaker who is permanently pushing boundaries, we have a new parcel of his sell-out release of Zuccardi Fósil Chardonnay 2019, one of the highest altitude Chardonnays in the world.

In June last year, Vinous's Joaquín Hidalgo released a review of 170 Argentinian white wines, placing Zuccardi Fósil at the top of the pyramid with 95 points. Now supported with scores of 95 points from the Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez and 94 points from Tim Atkin MW, there is no doubt that this is now 'one of Argentina’s top Chardonnays' (TA).

This is a must have for fans of cool-climate Chardonnay. Inspired by the great whites of Burgundy, this tops many of the wines it beautifully emulates. Outscoring Jean-Marc Boillot Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (£1,235 IB per case), at just £205 per case IB, Fósil 2019 looks very compelling.

Fósil is grown in some of the highest vineyards in the world, at an elevation of 1,400 metres, in one of the coldest parts of the Uco Valley. It is a wine 'more about the place than the grape' (WA) that really has to be tried to be believed. With only 716 cases made, the wine is as rare as the terroir.

Aged in a combination of egg-shaped concrete vats and 500 litre used French barrels, this un-oaked Chardonnay oozes with the essence of its unique terroir. 'Vibrant and very dry' (WA), with a marked chalkiness, it gives of notes of citrus and aromatic herbs with 'a powerful texture' and 'freshness that comes in with a kick at the end' (VN).

2016 was the first vintage released and within three short years it is remarkable to see Zuccardi's precision and focus place their wines among the finest Chardonnay in the world. Zuccardi is making waves among the critics, and the truly unique Fósil 2019 is a very smart buy at under £35 per bottle IB.
