|
2018 |
Arista Banfield Chardonnay 2018 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2018 Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard has tremendous energy and singular expression this vintage. The nose is a kaleidoscope of quince, coriander seed, honeysuckle and pastry, continually changing as it spends time in the glass. The palate balances bursts of juicy preserved citrus character with deeper tones of graphite and almond, its flavors continuing to shift and evolve, and it finishes with exceptional energy and length. Wow!

2020 |
Arnot Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay 2020 (12x75cl) Vinous (86)The 2020 Chardonnay Watson Ranch is light and lacking in both flavor development and depth. With fires advancing, this fruit was brought in five days earlier than normal. The 2020 was also bottled about six months earlier than is typical here. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle helps the 2020 come together a bit more. Today, it is decidedly awkward.

Au Bon Climat Chardonnay Santa Ynez Valley 2018 (12x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2018 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Santa Barbara Historic Vineyards Collection is creamy and ample, with pretty floral notes that lend complexity. This is one of the richer, creamier wines readers will find from this part of the old-vine section of Sanford & Benedict. A few hours of aeration brings out gorgeous textural richness to play off the wine's natural brilliance.

2018 |
Aubert Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons 2018 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97-99)One of the last vineyards picked, this section of Hyde vineyard in Carneros is planted to Corton Charlemagne clone on St. George rootstock. The 2018 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons leaps from the glass with vivacious fresh grapefruit, lemon peel, orange blossoms and lime cordial notes with nuances of fresh ginger, hay, sea spray and chalk dust. The full-bodied mouth explodes with the whole citrus-fruit flavor spectrum—lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit on steroids—complemented by loads of spicy sparks and lifted by amazing freshness, sporting a provocatively creamy texture and finishing long.

2020 |
Aubert Chardonnay Sugar Shack 2020 (12x75cl) Vinous (90-92)The 2020 Chardonnay Sugar Shack is creamy and expressive, with gorgeous depth and plenty of the richness readers expect in Aubert Chardonnays, although naturally in the smaller-scaled style of the year. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and orchard fruit build nicely in the glass. The 2020 is beautifully done and quite expressive today.

Aubert Sugar Shack 2018 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97-99)Produced from Montrachet Clone vines (what Mark Aubert calls “the citrus circus clone") grown in Rutherford AVA, the 2018 Chardonnay Sugar Shack comes bounding out of the glass with a sit-up-and-beg nose of candied lemon peel, green mango, guava and lime leaves plus hints of honeysuckle, toasted almonds, crushed stones and nutmeg. Full-bodied, the palate is electric with concentrated citrus and tropical fruits and the most amazing tension, featuring a satiny texture and very long, pristine finish.

Baettig Seleccion de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl)
In Bond: SG$600.00
|
2019 |
Baettig Seleccion de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)Baettig selected the El Triángulo and Llaima Largo plots to produce the 2019 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay because they deliver more vertical, mineral and tense wine to achieve finesse and complexity. The first experimental vinification was 2016, and 2019 was a year with a cold spring and a warm summer that resulted in wines that combine power, freshness and intensity, with more alcohol (13.5%), acidity (9.8 grams in tartaric!!) and freshness (pH 3.08) than previous years. The whole clusters were pressed, and the juice was put in French barrels to ferment with indigenous yeasts. It matured for 16 months in 400-liter oak barrels, 38% of them new. This is super austere, shy and closed, with subtle complexity, not very varietal, more about the soils and the cooler place. 2019 was not a large crop, and the wines have good concentration, a good year in the south. It has good depth, pungent flavors and some nutty, wax and acacia notes, not exuberant or explosive, but elegant and with density and more weight than the 2018, which gives it more depth and layers. This is superb, very complete. 2,900 bottles were filled in September 2020.

2017 |
Catena Zapata Chardonnay 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (91)A blend of different vineyards, the 2017 Catena Chardonnay fermented and aged in stainless steel and oak barrels with the lees (60% of the wine) for around ten months. It's a shy white, approachable and clean, with integrated acidity and focused flavors. This range is very drinkable and faithful to the variety. 198,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.

Catena Zapata White Bones Chardonnay 2012 (3x75cl)
In Bond: SG$619.00
|
2012 |
Catena Zapata White Bones Chardonnay 2012 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)The 2012 White Bones Chardonnay is also sourced from selected rows in the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary, produced in exactly the same way as the White Stones Chardonnay with barrels developing a thin layer of yeasts on top that provide extra complexity and nuances. The oak feels better integrated each vintage and while 2012 was clearly warmer and riper than 2011, the wine keeps that sharp acidity that provide freshness. However, in 2012 this is almost challenged by its sibling White Stones, which nearly reaches the same level of sophistication and complexity. I'm dying to taste the 2013s of these two groundbreaking Chardonnays. This vintage also yielded fewer bottles, around 2,100 of the elixir.

2015 |
Catena Zapata White Bones Chardonnay 2015 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)I had two vintages to taste from the two whites from Adrianna Vineyard, which provided a fascinating comparison. Like all the rest, the 2015 White Bones Chardonnay had a long fermentation with wild yeasts and aged in French barriques for some 12 to 16 months, depending on the lot. It's fascinating to compare this with the 2016 and with both years from the White Stones. This is the more exuberant, open, aromatic and balsamic of the four wines, while it is still very young and fresh. The palate is also very expressive and combines power with elegance and freshness. It's long, tasty and mineral, with a salty finish. 4,500 bottles were filled in July 2016.

2014 |
Catena Zapata White Stones Chardonnay 2014 (3x75cl) Vinous (95)(only 10% of this wine went through malolactic fermentation): Palish yellow, not 100% lucid. Knockout nose combines nectarine, mirabelle, candied peach, clove, ginger and crushed rock. Pungent and mineral-driven, offering an exciting sugar/acid balance and outstanding cut and intensity. Shows distinctly yellow fruits in an Alsace way. A very sexy vintage for this bottling, with its firm minerality framing and extending the very long finish and giving the wine terrific grip. The strong, youthfully bound-up acidity should hold this wine for a good decade, but I find this wine less austere than the 2013 at a similar stage because it has more sweetness of fruit to balance its pronounced acidity.

2016 |
Catena Zapata White Stones Chardonnay 2016 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (98)My favorite of the Adrianna whites, the 2016 White Stones Chardonnay was cropped from a low-yielding, cool and wet year, very unusual weather in Mendoza. It's sharp, austere, mineral and long. No matter how impressed I was with the 2015 or the two vintages of the White Bones I tasted next to it, this stole the show. It has a combination of mineral notes that transmit a serious sensation with hints of flowers, spices and herbs that show in a very subtle way. The palate is liquid chalk, with sharp and pungent flavors, nicely textured. It's precise, linear, long and sharp, with great length and persistence. It will be fascinating to see how this wine evolves in bottle, because I think we can have a big surprise in ten years from now. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2017.

Catena Zapata White Stones Chardonnay 2019 (3x75cl)
In Bond: SG$549.00
|
2019 |
Catena Zapata White Stones Chardonnay 2019 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (99)The amazing 2019 White Stones Chardonnay comes from a select group of 27 rows planted on lot I of the Adriana Vineyard, and the composition of those rows is soil with white oval stones covered by gravel. The Adriana Vineyard is planted at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level, in the district of Gualtallary in Tupungato. The stony soil prevents deep root growth, providing optimum drainage. This soil, which is very poor in organic matter, contributes to the vines' permanent stress conditions. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.
This is always a more austere wine than the White Bones, more mineral and restrained, less aromatic, with great balance, a little higher in alcohol and with very good acidity, rounder and more Meursault than Chablis but still with citrus freshness and pungent flavors and always some spice (curry) because of the aging in barrel with flor. This year, the two whites show a more marked personality, possibly aided by the style of the cooler year but also because the winery has a better understanding of the places. It's still very young and undeveloped; it's drinkable now, but with more time in bottle, it should develop greater complexity. Now the finish shows acidity and salt, which make it very vibrant. 6,600 bottles were filled in May 2020.

2019 |
Ceritas Charles Heintz Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2019 Chardonnay Charles Heintz Vineyard is a classic wine from this site. Rich, creamy and layered, the Heintz has that oily texture that is such a signature here. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, spice and brown butter lend notable complexity. Exotic tropical overtones compensate brighter saline nuances that lend tension to balance some of the more overt qualities that come so naturally.

Ceritas Marena Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2019 Chardonnay Marena bristles with coastal energy and tension. Citrus peel, white flowers, chalk, white pepper and mint are finely sculpted in this gorgeous appellation-level Chardonnay from Ceritas. Aeration brings out gorgeous depth and resonance. All the elements are so well balanced. The Marena is a blend from a south-facing block at Zephyr planted with Clone 4 Chardonnay and the thin canopy sections at Heintz, where the fruit is more exposed, in other words all fruit that is a bit more forward and generous than what is used in the vineyard designate bottlings.

Chacra Mainque Chardonnay 2020 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2020 Chardonnay Mainqué was made in partnership with the Burgundy winemaker Jean Marc Roulot with grapes from an old vineyard in Mainqué, Río Negro. Seventy-three percent of the wine was aged in mostly used French barrels, the rest in concrete tanks for 11 months. Yellow in the glass. The clear, expressive nose presents notes of acacia, hawthorn and honey with hints of pear and apple. Subtle aromas from the aging process enhance the complexity. Saline with expressive freshness, the flow is delicate while ginger notes develop at the back of the mouth. A rich, nuanced, vibrant wine.
