James Suckling (99)A great example of a 2021 from a district of southern Napa that often produces the coolest, most supple cabernets. So dense yet silky and elegant. Graphite, iron, seashell and espresso aromas meet super-concentrated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and cocoa, all wrapped in extra-fine tannins that structure it for long aging without being at all harsh to sip now. Fresh and balanced. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. |

Vinous (91)The 2017 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is bright, floral and nicely lifted, with plenty of red cherry pie and berry character. Medium in body and wiry - perhaps because of its recent bottling - the 2017 has plenty to recommend it. This is a gorgeous wine in its peer group. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)In contrast, the 2021 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is more masculine and feral, with ripe black fruits, cracked black pepper, leather, iron, and spring flowers, and a certain bloody character developing with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has a similar level of polish but is a touch more concentrated and lengthy on the palate, with ripe, building tannins and awesome length. Drink this spectacular Syrah over the coming 10-12 years. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97+)The 2020 Chardonnay Kokoro is a selection made by Lato and comes from the single vineyards. Aged 16 months in 60% new French oak, it reveals a lighter gold hue to go with an incredibly pure and precise nose of stone fruits, honeyed minerality, brioche, and hints of baking spices. Riveting on the palate, with medium to full body and bright yet integrated acidity, it's balanced, has a distinct sense of minerality, and a great, great finish. It's up with the crème de la crème in the vintage. |

Vinous (97)The 2019 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is once again the star of this range from Pax Mahle. Rich and exotic, with notable depth, the Hillsides is quite a bit brighter than the other Syrahs in the portfolio. Red cherry, plum, pomegranate, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco abound. The whole clusters are present, but nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. As always, the Hillsides is a blend taken from several sites, done with 100% whole clusters and aged in concrete. Every time I taste the Hillsides, I think the same thing: why doesn't Pax Mahle treat all his Syrahs this way? |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)The 2021 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is just starting to come into its own. Dark and explosive, with tons of energy, the 2021 is a potent, young Sonoma Hillsides. All the intensity of a vintage marked by severe drought comes through in the wine's slightly tough contours, and yet there is more than enough fruit density to match. This has really gained in volume and intensity over the last few years. Bright acids punctuate the finish. |

Wine Advocate (97)The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Newk was named for musician Sonny Rollins Newk, for Parra, the wildest jazz musician of recent times. He says he finds the wine wild, full of energy and minerality. It was produced with grapes from an old vineyard in Guarilihue that is worked by horse, from vines planted on decomposed and rocky granite soils with some iron and a sandy and silty texture. It fermented with 100% full clusters after four or five days with native yeasts and a total maceration time of 55 days, then the wine matured in an oak vat for 11 months. It has 13.5% alcohol and is austere and sharp, mineral and stony. It's a bit reductive and opens up to notes of fresh blood and iodine, a little Gonon with that herbal side. The palate is phenomenal; it's deep and has grip and is mineral and intense with energy, direct and not shy. Superb. 1,537 bottles were filled in February 2022. This has a strong personality and feels very complete. |

Wine Advocate (93)The 2022 Vinista hails from four vineyards, two planted on granite in Guarilihue and two on dark, sandy volcanic soils in Ñipas. It opens with a highly floral and slightly medicinal nose that introduces a soft, delicate palate with a higher degree of precision than typically associated with the variety. It concludes with a spry, powdery and perfumed finish. This is a dramatically overperforming and serious expression of País. |
