  • Sandhi Sanford and Benedict Chardonnay 2014 (6x150cl)

    Decanter (95)

It was a great pleasure to visit Rajat Parr in Santa Barbara at the beginning of this year and to see some of the extreme sites his team are farming. Since 2011, Raj and his winemaker Sashi Moorman have been producing consistently thrilling Chardonnays and the 2014s may well be their best to date. This wine, which hails from a vineyard planted in 1971 by the pioneering Richard Sandford, is beautiful, opening in the glass with a complex bouquet of lemon zest, tart pear, tangerine oil, subtle hazelnut and a lick of noble reduction. On the palate the wine is concentrated, intense and deep at the core, with great cut and energy through a finish that tingles with minerality. At 12% alcohol this is very far from the caricature of California Chardonnay, and readers who are about to get stung by 2015 Burgundy pricing should give this a serious look.

  • Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

A candidate for one of the wines of the vintage, this stunning 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford includes in its blend some of the oldest Cabernet vines in existence in Napa Valley. It tips the scales at a lofty 15.4% alcohol, but believe it or not, it is strikingly elegant and pure, with laser-like precision. Inky, dark ruby/purple, with a stunning nose of forest floor, creme de cassis and a subtle, earthy minerality, the wine is built like a skyscraper, with a multidimensional mouthfeel and incredible complexity and richness, yet it never comes close to tasting heavy or overwrought. This is just a great terroir, great winemaking, and the results are profound. It seems to be drinkable now, but is capable of at least another 10-20 years of full-throttle pleasure. This is a superstar and a remarkable effort. Bravo!

  • Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93+)

After a perfect wine in 2007, I suppose the 2008 is something of a letdown. A hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon (800 cases), this is still an outstanding wine, with classic graphite, creme de cassis, blueberry and floral notes all well-presented in the perfumed aromatics of this full-bodied, rich, concentrated wine. It has some noticeable tannins to be resolved and is not as seamless and flawless as the monumental 2007. Nevertheless, this is a gorgeous wine to drink over the next 20+ years.
  • Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as silky, perfumed and quite supple. It is a decidedly cooler, more inward wine than the 2008 tasted alongside it, yet there is plenty of fleshiness in the glass to make me think it will drink well for at least a handful of years. Blackberries, graphite, spices and licorice are layered into the long finish.

What a thrill it is to find it in such great shape today. Layered, aromatic and super-expressive, the 2011 is a wine of tremendous stature. Possibly the wine of the vintage is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon which is a more elegant, seamless wine compared to the more brooding and backward 2015. Exhibiting a deep purple color and utterly heavenly notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, white flowers, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, insane purity of fruit, ultra-fine tannin, and a finish that won’t quit. While a big, powerful wine, it’s the purity of fruit and tannin quality that sets this incredible wine at the top of the pyramid. Drink it anytime over the coming 2-3 decades. I loved the 2014 Bossman, and this blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier was mostly destemmed and spent 26 months in new 400-liter French oak barrels. It’s inky colored, concentrated and layered, with awesome darker Syrah fruits, terrific balance in its fruit, acidity and tannin, full-bodied richness, and a moderately tannic long finish. Forget bottles for 3-4 years.

  • Sanguis Pilgrim Syrah 2014 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (93)

White pepper, cedar, currants and hints of black olive all emerge from the 2014 Pilgrim (75% Syrah, 20% Grenache and the rest Roussanne), and while it has a decidedly cool-climate style on the nose, it's rounded and supple on the palate, with present, yet ripe tannin. It needs a year or two of cellaring and will have 15 years of ultimate longevity.
  • Sanguis Verve Grenach 2015 (6x75cl)

Discover the acclaimed Sanguis Verve Grenach 2015, an eclectic embodiment of California's Central Coast viticulture. The fruit is exclusively and carefully sourced from the biodynamically tended Thompson Vineyard, which allows for rich ripeness and complexity. The result is a flavoursome Grenache, aged for 24 months in French oak for enhanced body and depth. With a deep garnet hue, the Sanguis Verve Grenach 2015 offers an explosion of fragrant aromas - spiced raspberry, cinnamon, and a hint of black pepper, animating the senses. Upon the palate, leans towards a potpourri of black fruits, layered with subtle hints of smoke, leather and dark chocolate, leading to an elegantly long finish. This limited production of Sanguis Verve Grenach 2015 is a testament to refined winemaking, encapsulating the intimate relationship between grape, soil, and climate.

Sweet, palate-staining red/blue fruit liqueur, lavender pastille, cola and spice-cake flavors show outstanding depth as well as energy thanks to an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Checking in as a final blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 22% Zinfandel, 13% Syrah, 13% Tempranillo and the balance Grenache and Petite Sirah, the 2014 Paderewski Vineyard is as voluptuous and decadent as it gets.

  • Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Though I am not surprised, as the 2011 was magnificent from the outset. What a thrill it is to find it in such great shape today. Layered, aromatic and super-expressive, the 2011 is a wine of tremendous stature. Dark fruit, chocolate, sage and dried flowers all meld into the racy finish. The 2011 is quite simply outrageous. Readers lucky enough to own it should be thrilled. What a wine!

  • Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (3x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)
