The 2021 Almaviva is in a great spot from a vintage that saw all kinds of ups and downs, starting out dry and warm in spring with a surprise January rain. Not as dense as the 2022, it’s notably finessed and elegant, the grapes able to ripen slowly and develop supple tannins. A spicy, floral nose of raspberry, violet, and black licorice coat the medium-bodied palate of rounded structure and persistent acidity. As always, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, blended this time with 22% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in new French oak. Drinking well now, it should continue to do so through 2040.

It is deliberately produced from block-by-block harvested grapes, ensuring an expression that embodies the unique terroirs of the Eola-Amity Hills. This Chardonnay is aged gracefully in French Oak barrels, lending a touch of elegance and a rich, creamy finish to the wine.

With its alluring bouquet of citrus blossoms and its exquisite mineral-driven backbone, Rose & Arrow, Eola Springs Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2020 provides an experience that invites both curiosity and admiration. Markedly harmonious, this wine is an exemplar of the ageability and elite status of Rose & Arrow's single vineyard Chardonnays.

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2021 Chardonnay Eola Springs is the first commercial release of Chardonnay from Rose & Arrow. “We acquired this vineyard a few years ago,” winemaker Felipe Ramirez says of the west-facing, higher elevation, rocky site in the Eola-Amity Hills. “This is the first time we feel that we have the quality that can compete with the quality of our Pinot Noirs,” he continues. The wine was barrel fermented and underwent full malolactic conversion. It was matured for 11 months in oak and an additional seven months in stainless steel. The nose offers well-integrated matchstick scents that complement a core of yellow apple, beeswax and toast. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with concentrated tree fruit flavors. Its textural breadth is balanced by vibrant acidity, and it has a long, honeyed finish. 126 cases were made.

A wine with wonderful blueberry, blackberry and hints of cedar and spice. Full body, dense and beautiful fruit. Chocolate, walnut and berry. It goes on for minutes. A fabulous wine. Better in 2020 but gorgeous now.

A glorious and complex nose of tobacco, blackberries and hints of stones and flowers. Hints of bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, very tight and compacted. Linear backbone gives this form and tension. It has the same character on the palate as well as cayenne and other spice. Loved the 2014 but this shows more fine-grained tannins. So balanced and harmonious. A blend of 69% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Needs four or five years in bottle but a joy to taste now.

A very fine and elegant Almaviva with fresh fruit and herb character. Medium-to-full body, tight and focused with very fine, linear tannins and a chocolate and light cedar undertone to the whole thing. Savory, too. Smoked meat and succulent. It's tight but opens with air. Classicism here. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drink in 2021.

The aromas of blackberry leaves and iodine are wild and exotic here with mussel shells and earth underneath. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with powerful tannins that show muscle. It’s structured and powerful. Dense and very, very deep. Don’t touch this until 2025.

This is such a beautifully nuanced red with tobacco, dried herbs, wet earth and currants. Some leather and rose petals, too. Full-bodied and chewy, yet refined with great polish. It’s rich and intense at the same time. Very focused center palate. Broad layers of tannin and fruit. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better after 2024, but already a joy to taste.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is In the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
