Vinous (91-93)(the crop level here was down 50% due to the May hail, and these vines were picked nearly a week later than the rest of the Arnoux holdings) Good red-ruby. Wild black fruits, licorice, game and nutty oak on the nose. Creamy but still tight, with an impression of peppery acidity cutting through the purple fruit and violet flavors. Thick but not heavy owing to its firm acids. Serious, juicy wine, quite different in style from the rest of the 2009s here owing to the effect of the spring hail on the vines' ripening curve. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)Good bright, dark red. Dark berries, violet and a whiff of fresh peppercorn on the nose, complicated by mineral and oak notes. Sweet, creamy fruit is given definition by firm acidity. Suave, fine-grained, essentially round wine, showing the deeper pitch of the warm year. Finishes with subtly powerful, building length and fully ripe tannins. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2009 Vina El Pison is born from 67-year-old vines within a real clos rather than the fictitious ones that abound. I could be pedantic and separate it from Juan Carlos- wines under the Artadi umbrella, but like my predecessor, I will include it here. The 2009 has a fresh, floral, Margaux-like bouquet with fine delineation and intensity. The palate is full-bodied with an almost impenetrable carapace of licorice-tinged black fruits, minerals, citrus peel and a powerful, sensual finish. Perhaps impressive more than pleasurable (at the moment), this behemoth will need a decade in the cellar before it will shine. Drink 2022-2040. |
