Of the wines of the 1980s, the 1989 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano vies for the 1982 as the best wine of a decade that saw Bruno Giacosa make a dizzying array of stunning Barolos and Barbarescos. Still explosive and heady, the 1989 captures the best of Santo Stefano vineyard as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. There’s not much more to say. Heady Nebbiolo aromatics and dense fruit infuse this exotic, deeply satisfying Barbaresco from Bruno Giacosa. The 1989 was the first young Giacosa Riserva I bought on release. The price was $55 a bottle, which was a fortune for me at the time. Many things have changed since then. But the wine? Well, it is as monumental as ever.

The 1989 Climens has an even more complex bouquet than the 1990 and perhaps the best bottle that I have encountered. Yellow plum, saffron, quince and a touch of Manuka honey soars on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a tangy, eucalyptus-tinged entry, very harmonious and long. Surfeit with energy, this is a fabulous Climens that deserves a place in your cellar or preferably on your dining table. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022.

The Croque Michotte vineyards have been producing unique, traditionally-made wines since 1906, under the careful guardianship of the Carle family.

The 1989 vintage masterfully blends Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a whisper of Cabernet Sauvignon, and was aged in French oak barrels for 24 months. The maturation process grants it a distinctive depth, harmonising its dark berry fruit notes with undercurrents of spices and soft tannins. Its appeal extends beyond the taste, presenting a rich ruby hue that truly rounds off the sensory experience.

Poised between old-world charm and modern viticulture, the Croque Michotte 1989 offers a taste journey illuminating the exceptional calibre of French winemaking.

A subtle, concentrated, graceful wine, offering a band of cherry, spice, oak and plum-tinged flavors that bring out vanilla, nutmeg and brown sugar notes on the finish. It's also firmly tannic and backward now, so it's a good candidate for the cellar.

From a scorching-hot year and compared to the 1999 and the 2009 by Jamet, the jaw-droppingly good 1989 Cote Rotie is more muscular and savory than the more sweetly fruited 1990. Offering up tons of asphalt, beef blood, smoked earth and spice, as well as a core of gamy Syrah fruit, it's fabulously textured, full-bodied, structured and has a killer finish. A big, bruiser style of Cote Rotie, it has another decade of prime drinking, and will hold for even longer.

Delivers lots of tanned leather and spices, with very ripe fruit, from dried strawberry to raisin, turning to jam. Full-bodied, offering a very fresh palate of exotic fruit, currant and raisin as well as silky and polished tannins. So long and beautiful. Why wait? But it has a long life ahead. There is a lot of bottle variation in this wine due to TCA issues, but this is a beauty.¿'89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). Drink now. -JS

The 1989 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a thrilling wine that literally takes my breath away – and that comes from someone who usually isn't the hugest fan of this particular wine. In 1989 the Costa Russi offers a touch more roundness and spiciness than the Barbaresco. The fruit here is super-luxurious and silky, while the tannins possess remarkable polish. The finish remains firm and full of life. Even 20 years ago Angelo Gaja and Guido Rivella were making wines most producers would kill for today. Simply put this is a magical bottle; I only wish I owned it. Wow.

The 1989 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with lovely floral/incense and iris aromas that combine beautifully with the black cherry and boysenberry scents, a little iodine emerging later. The palate is very well balanced with good depth, again quite floral in style with supple tannin. Maybe it lacks the elegance of the 2002 Les Amoureuses but it feels velvety smooth and offers just perfect salinity on the finish that makes you coming back for another sip. For me, this outflanks the 1989 Bonnes-Mares. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Roumier dinner in Hong Kong.

The 1989 Haut-Brion commenced one of the most spectacular dinners that I ever attended, this representing one of the best bottles of a dozen tasted over the years. Deep in color with thin bricking on the rim, the haunting bouquet has heart-rending delineation – as profound as it has ever been. Scents of black olives intermingle with graphite, clove and cherry liqueur, underneath subtle gravel scents becoming more vocal with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and maybe not as powerful as it was a few years ago. Yet it is ineffably complex with layers of pure dark berry fruit, black olive, cloves and crushed violets. This particular example was one of the most youthful that I have encountered. The finish is so effortless and yet it changes constantly in the glass, revealing new facets, some attendees noticing a touch of greenness after 30 minutes although I could not detect that myself. It is an awe-inspiring Haut-Brion that is only just beginning to demonstrate the ethereal heights it can achieve. Tasted at the International Business & Wine First Growth Dinner at the Four Seasons.

From a praised vintage, Huet's golden colored 1989 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux displays a very clear, subtle and lovely delicate bouquet of ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits (peaches, pineapples, raisins) along with a delicious earthy/chalky background. Round, rather semi-sweet and very delicate on the palate, this elegant and balanced Chenin reveals a great finesse, vitality and lingering salinity. Medium-bodied but intense and fine, this wine is lifted by its delicate and ludic acidity, whereas the tannins are slightly austere in the beginning but delicate after aeration. The finish is stimulating in its finesse and tender grip. This is an excellent wine to be enjoyed over the next 30+ years. (89 EUR; 86 GBP)
