Wine Advocate (98)

This is a re-release of a wine that first hit the market some seven years ago. The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is being reintroduced to the market, with only 2,500 bottles. This is a stunning wine that absolutely merits this considerable score increase. Made when dottore Franco Biondi Santi was alive and very present in the winery, this wine shows spectacular elegance and finesse, articulated with fine aromas of forest berry, blue flower, eucalyptus and lightly barbecued smoke. The wine shows extreme Sangiovese elegance and purity, and while the wine is almost fragile in approach, it ultimately reveals more brawn, volume and staying-power than anticipated.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's tasting and at the château, the 2006 Calon Segur was current winemaker Vincent Millet's first vintage. In many ways, you can see it as one of the last of the old style Calon Segur wines with a higher percentage of Merlot than nowadays (the 2006 consists of 33% Merlot), while I aver that the tannins are not as fine as they are nowadays. The Merlot component is vividly expressed on the nose with ravishing ripe red cherries, kirsch and strawberry, just slightly smudged by the alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, quite sexy in style but it does not have the class of more recent vintages and it seems to have remained tough up on the finish. It will loosen up with time, so afford this another 6-8 years in bottle. Tasted January 2016.

So much ripe fruit here with currants and sultanas, yet fresh and very clean. Dark berries too. Incredible ripe Sangiovese character. Full body, with masses of fruit and chewy tan nins. Plus, there's black licorice and dried berries. Give it time to soften. What a bottle. Will it ultimately be better than 2001 Tenuta Nuova? Yes. Best after 2013.

Vinous - Josh Raynolds (94-97)

Foudre #1 (the fine one, according to Avril): Bright red. Intense strawberry and raspberry on the nose, with subtle garrigue and minerals adding complexity. Silky red fruit flavors show seductive spice and floral pastille qualities. Finishes with great persistence. Foudre #2 (the tannic one): Ruby-red. Bright red fruit aromas, with a deep undercurrent of licorice adding seriousness. The palate shows very spicy bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur flavors, chewy tannic grip and a long, vibrant finish. If this is Avril's idea of tannic in 2006, the final wine should be a supple beauty. Foudre #3 (the concentrated one, from 80-year-old vines cropped at15 hl/ha): Inky ruby. Rich cherry and cassis aromas, with a deep tapenade quality adding complexity. Sappy, sweet and packing major dark berry punch, this clocks in at 16.5% alcohol, but there's no obvious heat. An approximate blend: I hate doing this, but why not, said Avril, who doesn't believe that on-the-spot blends are accurate reflections of what winds up in the bottle. But this was his idea, not mine! Dark ruby. Powerful kirsch and blackcurrant aromas, with exotic licorice and fresh floral character expanding with air. Pliant dark berry and bitter cherry flavors carry through the long, sappy finish. A balanced, sweet powerhouse from this vantage point, with the concentration to age for at least a decade or two.

Blended of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2006 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet colored with a touch of brick, opening with enticing scents of rosemary-crusted roast lamb, dried cherries, baked blackcurrants and mincemeat pie with touches of fallen leaves, cigar box and pencil lead. Medium-bodied, lively and elegantly played in the mouth, it has a firm backbone of chewy tannins and plenty of mineral accents on the long finish.

Esteemed by vintners for his precision and dedication, François Villard presents the Francois Villard Cote Rotie Brocarde 2006 – a perfect exemplification of the monumental Côte Rôtie region. This Northern Rhône full-bodied Syrah indulges the senses with a ripe, complex bouquet of dark fruits, black olives, smoked meat and a peppery finish. Similar to all of François Villard's wines, this 2006 vintage was traditionally vinified with hand-picked, entirely de-stemmed grapes, matured in oak for up to two years. Its inherent gravity anchors the wine, providing an exhilarating tension between the voluptuous fruit and refined, taut tannins. Noteworthy for its balance and longevity, the Francois Villard Cote Rotie Brocarde 2006 is simultaneously powerful and elegant – an admirable testament to François Villard's masterful viticulture and meticulous ageing process. Sublime now, it also promises an impressive evolution, making it an exquisite addition for discerning collectors and Syrah enthusiasts.

Deep, bright red. Expansive bouquet of red berries, kirsch, violet, bacon fat and warm asphalt. Bright red fruit flavors are braced by suave minerality, picking up gently musky underbrush and silky tannins with air. Reminds me of a top-notch Gevrey-Chambertin in its fruit presence and texture. Vinous - Josh Raynolds (93-96)

Finishes sweet and extremely long, with a palate-staining flavor of raspberry preserves.

Vinous - Josh Raynolds (92-95)

Ruby color. Highly expressive bouquet of spicy raspberry, cassis and incense, with a strong violet quality adding complexity. Tightly wound on entry, then fleshes out in the middle palate, offering a sexy array of dark berry liqueur flavors and wonderful sap. Finishes long and sweet, with velvety tannins. This is a great vintage for this vineyard, Rostaing commented.

Wine Enthusiast (93)

With a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has both structured and superbly rich fruit. The tannins are firm, but show a sweet, enticing edge to them, giving a full body and classic, fresh black currant acidity. An impressive wine, which definitely needs to age—five years or more.
