The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time.

All of these wines from Cavallotto deliver a very floral and perfumed subtext that gives lift and delicate buoyancy to the overall bouquet. This is the Castiglione Falletto magic that shows so well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers dried cherry, sandalwood, bramble and forest floor. The wine reveals a slightly wild and untamed character that adds to its interest and personality. Overall, this is an elegant wine with a streamlined and elegant finish. The aromas are focused and bright. I can't wait to taste the Riserva expression from this site when it is released in three years' time.

The 2018 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru has a very charming bouquet that I feel has more delineation and precision than the Les Mitans at this premature juncture. Very focused with more mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry, dark berry fruit mixed with black pepper and a light gaminess towards the finish. Very fresh and vibrant, this is a superb Volnay from Clerget.

Incredible, reserved ripeness and depth already evident on the nose after one whiff, offering plum, cedar, rose hip, sandalwood, and licorice. Full-bodied with superb depth of fruit and an abundance of polished tannins that give the wine poise and grace, even though it’s long and powerful. The quality of the tannins are exceptional. Sheer and refined. This comes from the center of Cannubi. Aged five years in Stockinger cask. Better after 2026.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Taillepieds has a slightly deeper color than the Les Pitures, more Volnaysian in comparison perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity with plenty of cranberry and raspberry fruit, leading to a refreshingly structured finish that has just the right amount of salinity. There is slightly more structure to the 2015 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté than to the Gavarini Chiniera of the same vintage, and the only differences here are the soils and that this fruit is harvested about ten days later. It's a pretty fascinating demonstration of the power of the single vineyard. The Gavarini Chiniera parcel offers slightly sandier soils, whereas this site is composed of more clay. In rainy years, the Gavarini Chiniera vineyard drains more effectively, whereas the Ginestra's soil retains more moisture in the hot and dry vintages. As a result, in vintages such as this one, Ginestra shows a more compact nature and, in general, provides more impact and more structure. This is a very robust expression, extremely linear and tight. The Ginestra Casa Maté narrowly wins this round. It's another beautiful Barolo.

Elio Sandri's 2017 Barolo Perno is fabulous. More than anything else, I am struck by the wine's freshness and energy, both of which are hard to find in this torrid, dry year. Wow, this is really quite a wine. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Ginestra is guided by three lucky stars: First, it is made by an excellent producer. Second, it comes from an excellent vintage. And third, it comes from an excellent vineyard site. This is a stunning achievement that is teeming with life, intensity, elegance, pedigree and sheer excitement. The bouquet achieves impressive balance with fruit, spice, mineral and tertiary tones that are all played forward with equal intensity. There is a spot of sweetness on the close (with 15% alcohol) that adds to the volume and fullness of the mouthfeel. This wine merits a special place at the back of your cellar where it can age undisturbed for the next decade or two. Only 4,000 bottles exist.

The 2006 Barolo Big ‘d Big, from the south-facing Mosconi vineyard in Monforte, impresses for its massive richness and the sheer purity of its fruit. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the overt, in-your-face Baroli that emerge from this warm site, but there is not denying the Big – and what a great name that is – for its sensual, exuberant personality. This will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Black centre, purple rim. 50% whole bunch with two new barrels in seven. The alcohol shows through a bit on the nose. Racked and assembled.

James Suckling (95)

This is very spicy and fruity one with perfumed and bright aromas. Leather, too. Medium-bodied, refined and layered with beautiful ripe tannins. Fine, polished texture with berry and walnut undertones. Drink or hold.

James Suckling (98)

The aromas are so complex yet subtle wtih wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dried flowers as well. Full body, chewy tannins that are ultra-fine and powerful, yet there is a finesse and beauty to them as I said from barrel. Classic, great nebbiolo. Try in 2023.

Vinous (97)

Always released a year later than the majority of the wines, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate is just as fabulous today as it was last year and every other time I have tasted it. Cool-mineral inflected notes grace the palate in this vibrant, beautifully delineated Barolo. A wine of pure structure and pedigree, the 2008 captivates the senses with layers of dark fruit, pine, menthol, new leather, tobacco, exotic spices and tar. Readers need to give the 2008 at least several more years in bottle, but, wow, what a wine!

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2006 Barolo Big ‘d Big, from the south-facing Mosconi vineyard in Monforte, impresses for its massive richness and the sheer purity of its fruit. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the overt, in-your-face Baroli that emerge from this warm site, but there is not denying the Big – and what a great name that is – for its sensual, exuberant personality. This will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

The 2007 Barolo Vigna d’la Roul explodes onto the palate with masses of dark fruit, mocha, spices, licorice and tar, showing considerable muscle. Despite its size, the wine possesses tons of textural finesse in the expansive style of the year. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

Burghound (91-93)

This is also elegant, perfumed and very floral with its pretty blend of red currant, cherry, anise and violet-scented nose. There is lovely tension and minerality suffusing the rich, focused and surprisingly powerful flavors that brim with dry extract on the beautifully long, firm and youthfully austere finish. This is excellent and easily the best of the Tawse wines from the Côte de Beaune. Very much worth considering. (91-93)/2031+

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)

Black centre, purple rim. 50% whole bunch with two new barrels in seven. The alcohol shows through a bit on the nose. Racked and assembled. Impressive density here, even with some intense red fruit backing the blacker notes. The power takes it out of a classical Volnay but is still a good wine for those who are OK with the extra intensity. Tasted: November 2021
