Experience the sumptuous delight that is the Duckhorn Decoy Zinfandel 2019. Originating from the globally recognised Californian winery, Duckhorn Vineyards, this wine has been exquisitely crafted from handpicked grapes to produce a rich, full-bodied Zinfandel. The growing season of 2019 offered perfect weather conditions, allowing the grapes to perfectly develop their deep, robust flavours. The winemakers vigilantly monitored the vines and meticulously timed the harvest, harnessing the distinct character of Zinfandel at its peak. Made in the traditional red wine style, fermentation in stainless steel tanks before ageing in French oak barrels ensures superior taste and texture. The Duckhorn Decoy Zinfandel 2019 is a deep, velvety wine that captivates the senses with its luscious black cherry, raspberry and spicy clove notes, perfectly balanced by its subtle hints of mocha. A truly exceptional example of the mastery of Duckhorn Vineyards, the Decoy Zinfandel 2019 adds a distinguished touch to any occasion. |

James Suckling (96)The nose is quite reserved, showing some melon, pear and lavender. Then, on the palate, the expansion starts on a base of silky almond cream and builds up slowly and steadily through the long, long finish. Aftertaste of lemon cream. Never ebullient, but medium-bodied, layered and silky, this is quiet refinement flexing its muscles. Total balance. Beautifully done. All in place. Best ever. Enjoy now or hold. |

Vinous (97)The 2019 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is once again the star of this range from Pax Mahle. Rich and exotic, with notable depth, the Hillsides is quite a bit brighter than the other Syrahs in the portfolio. Red cherry, plum, pomegranate, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco abound. The whole clusters are present, but nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. As always, the Hillsides is a blend taken from several sites, done with 100% whole clusters and aged in concrete. Every time I taste the Hillsides, I think the same thing: why doesn't Pax Mahle treat all his Syrahs this way? |

Jeb Dunnuck (La Muse) (100)Including the highest percentage of Merlot (at the moment anyway), the 2016 La Muse checks in as 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Malbec that spent 15-16 months in roughly 90% new French oak. This magical wine shows how good Merlot (and Sonoma) can be and offers extraordinary notes of crushed violets, spring flowers, scorched earth, graphite, black cherries, and crème de cassis. As elegant and seamless as they come, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has an incredible spine of acidity and tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. It has the class and purity to drink well even today, but it’s not going to hit prime time for at least another decade and will keep for 3-4 decades. Bravo! |
