Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2014 (12x75cl)

Raymond Chan (100)

Full, even, black-hued ruby-red with youthful purple tints. The nose is very full with softly concentrated and layered aromas of rich, ripe, dark red berries and cherries along with nuances of dark red plums entwined with fragrant violet florals, fresh herb and spicy detail. The aromatics blossom to reveal notes of raspberry liqueur, earth and minerals. This exudes richness allied to elegance and finesse. Medium-full bodied, vibrantly succulent and lusciously sweet fruit flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit are harmoniously melded with flavours of ripe dark plums and fragrant violet florals, dark herbs, spices and red licorice. The flavours are seamlessly mouthfilling and supported by refined, flowery tannin extraction, and enlivened by poised acidity. This has drive, energy and fine linearity, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained, rich finish of spiced cherries and raspberry liqueur. This is a beautifully rich and succulent, elegantly balanced and refined Pinot Noir with seamless-flowing, ripe flavours of dark berry and cherry fruit with complexing floral and herbal detail. Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from the oldest parcels, 40% Abel clone with the remainder clones 5, Dijon and 10/5, indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20-26 days on skins and aged 11 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Lightish mid ruby, not star bright because unfiltered. Pretty, aromatic red fruits with the freshness of stem influence but without being overtly stemmy – the freshness and structure of stems but no greenness. Already quite complex on the nose, with hints of floral and citrus as well as the red fruits. There's intensity without unwanted concentration, the fruit is sweet but not overly so and the tannins already silky. Freshness to the long finish.

Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2016 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98)

The flagship 2016 Syrah Astralis checks as all Syrah that comes from a single vineyard planted in 1920 on more gravelly, clay, and iron-laced soils. Brought up in 90% new French oak, it has a classic, almost restrained bouquet of pure Shiraz goodness, including ripe blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with notes of charred meat, rendered bacon fat, crushed violets, and pepper. Beautifully balanced and full-bodied, it's a Shiraz that seems to have one foot in Côte Rôtie and one foot in the McLaren Vale. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20-30 years. It's the real deal and an incredible expression of Syrah.

The Real Review (96)

Deepish, bright, youthful red/purple colour, with a lovely fragrant bouquet of red and dark cherries, strawberry and rose petals. It's complex and foresty too, but shows more primary fruit and perfume than usual for a young Escarpment pinot. Dried flowers, dried herb, savoury underbrush aromas. Very complex and profound in the mouth, with a very long carry. The tannins are in excellent harmony. An outstanding vintage for this vineyard. (70% whole-bunches)

The latest vintage of this noteworthy producer's Chardonnay is singing. (75% shiraz and 25% cabernet sauvignon) Deep, glass-staining ruby. Spicy blackberry and blueberry aromas are complicated by smoky Indian spices and fresh flowers. Deep garnet-brick, the 1999 Meshach has an intense nose of evolved aromas spice and dried berry aromas: sandalwood, cinnamon stick, anise, cloves and fenugreek over dried plums, dried mulberries, prunes and figs with hints of soy and espresso. The clean, fresh aromas of just-picked citrus fruits belie the enormous power of lime juice and rich lemon pith that immediately fills the front palate on this latest vintage. There’s poise in addition to the power though, with multiple layers of rounded citrus and mineral flavours enjoying a luxurious textural roll through the mid-palate. Perfect integration of fresh citric acid carries the pure fruit qualities through extraordinary length to a crisp, lip-smacking finish.

Deep violet. Explosively perfumed scents of ripe blueberry, cassis, kirsch, cured tobacco and dried flowers. At once very ripe and lively, with potent red and dark berry flavors; verges on jammy but maintains energy and focus. Soft tannins add support to this massive shiraz, whose level of extract suggests that it will repay at least a decade of cellaring.

Wine Advocate (97)

From vines planted in 1892, the 2018 Block 6 Shiraz is another ripper, as Aussies might say. Aged in 40% new French and American oak, the cedar, grilled meat and vanilla accents are there, but they're just part of a compelling package that includes notes of blackberries, licorice, black olives and intricate herbal complexities of sage, thyme and the like. Full-bodied and concentrated, it's structured yet supple, powerful yet elegant, with a long, velvety finish, simply a terrific example of Block 6—perhaps the best I've had the privilege to taste. Impressive now, it really deserves a few years in the cellar, and it should drink well for up to two decades.

The Western Australian (99)

Let's put it this way. This is the closest I have come to awarding a wine 100 points...Stellar wine from a stellar vintage. The remarkable this is that this is a wine 100 percent barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for 11 months - and it certainly doesn't taste excessive, or even slightly oak. It has such high-fidelity purity with complex seductive aromatics of vanilla bean and light oatmeal with a cutting minerality and spicy lift. But the palate, oh the palate. This is where things start to explode. Power, poise and persistence with a dry savouriness balancing the intense ripe fruit. It is such a long finish with an ever so slightly, charry finish completing a remarkable wine

Wine Spectator (94)

Plush, intense and vivid in flavor, this is aromatic with herbal cherry and currant character, leading into ripe fruit that's balanced with creamy, spicy, chocolate-tinged oak notes. A wine of great presence and length. Powerful, but not even close to being over the top.

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2006 Grenache Onkaparinga was reviewed as a barrel sample in Issue 173. Purple-colored, it has a reticent bouquet of black cherry, plum, and boysenberry. Layered on the palate with ample sweet fruit, this lengthy effort will deliver pleasure through 2016.

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2018 (6x75cl)

A harmonious, multifaceted nose offers notes of bright citrus, fresh melon and flowers, while a chorus of sun-baked stones and freshly baked bread linger behind. Beautifully textural and salty on the palate, it crunches with minerals and vibrant fruit. The oak is tucked away and the finish long and salty.

Vinous (93)

(75% shiraz and 25% cabernet sauvignon) Deep, glass-staining ruby. Spicy blackberry and blueberry aromas are complicated by smoky Indian spices and fresh flowers. Sappy, pure, deeply concentrated dark berry flavors stain the palate, with fine-grained tannins gaining strength with air. The spicy character repeats on the finish of this beautifully balanced blend, which is surprisingly lithe and precise.

Concentrated, full bodied and layered in the mouth, it offers a medium-firm level of very fine tannins, enlivening acid and a very long finish. It makes a gorgeous glass right now, though it should continue to cellar to 2020+.

Decanter (98)

The clean, fresh aromas of just-picked citrus fruits belie the enormous power of lime juice and rich lemon pith that immediately fills the front palate on this latest vintage. There’s poise in addition to the power though, with multiple layers of rounded citrus and mineral flavours enjoying a luxurious textural roll through the mid-palate. Perfect integration of fresh citric acid carries the pure fruit qualities through extraordinary length to a crisp, lip-smacking finish.

Vinous (93)

Deep violet. Explosively perfumed scents of ripe blueberry, cassis, kirsch, cured tobacco and dried flowers. At once very ripe and lively, with potent red and dark berry flavors; verges on jammy but maintains energy and focus. Soft tannins add support to this massive shiraz, whose level of extract suggests that it will repay at least a decade of cellaring.

Deep garnet in color, the 2009 The Armagh Shiraz displays a more evolved black plum and kirsch character accented by notes of pencil lead, black olives and underbrush. Kay Brothers Amery Block 6 Shiraz 2018 (6x75cl)

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2018 (12x75cl)
