(Maison) Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

Vinous (98)

The 2010 Montrachet, from the Chassagne side, is utterly magnificent. Smoke, slate, butter, spices and juicy yellow stone fruits explode from the glass as this totally captivating, alluring wine shows off its pedigree. Waves of fruit continue to develop in the glass. The 2010 Montrachet is simply huge. It is compelling today, and I imagine it will be compelling in 30 years' time. This is a dazzling effort.

Benjamin Leroux Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

(totally destemmed; one-third new oak): Good dark red. Highly aromatic nose dominated by clove oil and white pepper. A juicy, intense spice bomb on the palate, but youthfully imploded today and showing limited flesh. Wonderfully penetrating, electric wine with a slowly building, very long finish. Clos Saint-Denis is often deceptively narrow in the early going and then puts on weight with a decade in the bottle: I'd bet on this one to reward cellaring.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the upper part of the clos. One of my favorite aromatics from Bouchard, it is beautifully defined with effervescent red berry fruit, rose petals and basalt scents. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins framing pure dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. Impressive mineralité comes through on the finely chiseled finish. This is a very well-crafted Clos de Vougeot.

Bouchard have some of the biggest holdings of Corton-Charlemagne, at 3.9ha, all of them east-facing and high on the slope. This is perfumed and intense, with citrus rind and tangerine notes, chalky freshness and old-vine concentration. The oak is assertive but well integrated.

Vinous (96)

The 2016 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a generous and pleasing nose with scents of strawberry preserve, crushed stone, rose petals and subtle orange-blossom. This is refined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins. Beautifully balanced, this has a symmetry that is beguiling and classic. A little austere finish suggests it will benefit from several years in bottle. Utterly beguiling with enormous ageing potential. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet with dark cherry fruit, blackcurrant and briary tinged with fine mineralité - hints of cold stone percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannin, good depth of fruit and crucially a keen line of acidity that maintains the tension. There is a subtle spicy, almost white pepper element to this Clos Vougeot that becomes more accentuated as it gently fans out on the finish. This is a very impressive Clos de Vougeot.

Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is the standout wine for Domaine d'Eugenie this year. It was cropped at 16 hectoliters per hectare (compared to 38 hectoliters per hectare in 2017). It easily is blessed with the finest aromatics from the domaine: red and black fruit, fine mineralité with just a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity—real personality here, with a very pure and tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I like the way it just keeps rolling across the senses. This is extremely sophisticated and full of breeding.

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is well defined and precise, with cranberry, raspberry and vibrant red cherry scents that soar from the glass. The oak here is very well assimilated. The well-balanced palate offers fine but firm tannins that frame the black cherry and raspberry fruit. Lovely tension and mineralité on the finish, which delivers just the right amount of spice and length. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Eugenie Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94+)

The 2017 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is a great success, unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries, wild berries, rich soil tones and espresso roast, framed by a lavish but nicely integrated touch of toasty new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with a generous core of ripe but juicy fruit, concluding with an expansive, saline finish. While this is quite giving and charming by the standards of the appellation, it's the most concentrated wine in the Eugénie portfolio this year, and will likely prove the longest lived.

Vinous (92-94)

Bright, green-tinged yellow. Cardamom and spearmint dominate the nose. Densely packed and salty but also quite high-pitched, with lemon and lime flavors energized by tightly coiled minerality. Voluminous but very backward. This will need a good six to eight years of cellaring. A rather unusual combination of exotic on the nose and saline on the palate.

Vinous (95)

The 2016 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a very pure, almost pastille-like bouquet with copious red cherry fruit mixed with crushed strawberry and a little cassis. La Grande Rue? [Post script: Bingo!] The palate is very pretty with fine-grain tannin. This is surfeit with freshness and vitality, although it does not quite have the depth and structure of other Grand Crus from the appellation. It does fan out towards the finish. The persistence, and the saline aftertaste are very appealing. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 La Grande Rue has a deep, introspective bouquet, offering more black fruit than red; touches of oyster shell and seaweed percolate through with time. The palate is where the quality shines through, in the filigreed tannins and the wonderful sense of symmetry. Fresh as a daisy without compromising intensity, especially on the pixelated finish, which seems to go on forever. Brilliant. This far exceeded my expectations. Wine Advocate (94)

The 2004 Chardonnay Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru "Champ d'Alouette" was fermented and aged for six months in oak and offers an intense, pure yet ripe and complex bouquet with spicy-mineral flavors. Terribly rich and mouthfilling on the palate, this is a concentrated yet complex and fruit-intense Chardonnay with firm grip and mineral expression. No malolactic fermentation. Expressive and very promising. The wine was dosed with 2.5 grams per liter in April 2017. Tasted April 2018.

2016

Henri Boillot Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93-95)

(13.4% natural alcohol; this vineyard saw less frost than the Boillots' Clos Vougeot parcels but the crop is small here even in the good years, according to Guillaume Boillot, who is aging the wine in a new barrel but vinified it in a traditional cuve for 25 days): Bright dark, red. Medicinal dark fruit and licorice aromas are a bit muted today by a strong oak element. Densely packed and wonderfully tactile but also juicy and energetic, conveying a strong impression of thrust to its very intense black cherry and saline soil flavors. Very concentrated, voluminous wine with a powerful impression of terroir; altogether fatter than the Boillot's '16 from the Côte de Beaune. Really spreads out to saturate the palate and linger on the dense, spicy aftertaste. One feels the thick skins in the wine's very natural tannins.

A gorgeously spicy nose features elegant red berry, Asian-style tea and a hint of violet aromas. The succulent and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with plenty of sap while delivering excellent length on the strikingly long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This will need a few years to develop more overall depth but this should be seriously good when it finally reaches its apogee.

Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2014 (12x75cl)

Vinous (94+)

Full red-ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and violet are complicated by a distinct element of torrefaction. Densely packed and hugely concentrated, conveying outstanding energy and saline minerality to its remarkably sappy black cherry, dark berry, earth and floral flavors. A caramel note is probably due to the oaks (Roty uses Billon and Rousseau barrels here). Finishes extremely long, with saline and licorice notes. There's nothing hard about these tannins but this wine will nonetheless require a long time in the cellar to approach its peak.

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes is fabulous, blossoming in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berry fruit, cassis, coniferous forest floor, incense, rose petal and wood smoke. On the palate, the wine is multidimensional, expansive and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and depth and wonderful sappy energy, its ripe tannins cloaked in layer after layer of fruit. Bright dark red. Aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate, crushed rock, brown spices, blood orange and peony. Wonderfully savory, intense and wild, with its dark fruit and soil flavors given definition and grip by powerful minerality, terrific floral lift and sound acidity. Seriously tangy, structured wine with outstanding slowly mounting length and utterly noble tannins that saturate the teeth and tongue. Mounir Saouma showed me all four elements of this wine in late 2016 but blended them to make this single outstanding bottling.

(14% alcohol; from three different parcels; nearly totally destemmed): Good dark ruby-red. Raspberry and pepper aromas are lifted by floral, spicy and herbal nuances on the very pure, perfumed nose. Sappy red and dark berry flavors project terrific peppery energy, with a note of chocolate emerging with air. This very deep wine will need considerable bottle aging. Finishes with superb spreading tanning and palate-staining length. One of the highest in alcohol among this extraordinary set of 2016s but with plenty of buffering extract. A great Bonnes-Mares in the making, from a vintage that was generally kind to this grand cru except for some frost losses close to the village of Chambolle.

Utterly seamless, perfumed, youthfully taut wine with palate-caressing red berry and crushed stone flavors. Offers a rare combination of fruit intensity and finesse. Perhaps most impressive today on the silky, slowly mounting finish, which features compelling sappy, salty persistence. The limestone soil gives this wine a quality that reminded me of Montrachet! Vinous (92-94)

(from vines in both Charmes and Mazoyères): Dark red-ruby. Inviting aromas of raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and dried rose, along with a cool licorice note. Juicy, intense wine with excellent definition and lovely inner-mouth floral lift. Still a bit youthfully medicinal but already conveys an attractive texture and a harmony of elements. Finishes juicy, spicy and quite long, with suave, fine-grained tannins and a repeating suggestion of medicinal reserve. Saouma was not the only producer I visited this fall who noted that Charmes-Chambertin has benefited substantially from global warming. Not too long ago, Charmes typically had a greenness as well as underripe tannins, he said. (I will withhold early judgment on a 350-liter barrel of Griottes-Chambertin, which was fusel and extremely reduced, and still had some unconverted malic acidity.)

Vinous (94)

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fulsome, seductive bouquet of maraschino cherries, crushed strawberry, orange blossom and light tangerine aromas. The palate is almost pixelated on the entry and shows wonderful acidity and mineralité. Tensile from beginning to end, culminating in a vivid, almost sorbet-fresh finish. This is a superb Mazis.

Vinous (96)

A beautiful Charmes-Chambertin, from some of the oldest vines in Burgundy.

Lucien Le Moine Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95-98)

(from two suppliers, one of whom vinified partly with whole clusters): Bright ruby-red. Discreet aromas of raspberry and flowers convey incredible purity and lift. This splendid Clos de Bèze really leaves the taste buds quivering.

Good medium ruby. High-pitched violet perfume lifts the aroma of ripe black cherry. Wonderfully suave, intense and refined, with a pungently fresh quality that reminded me of cut grass. This highly concentrated wine has perfectly integrated acidity, as well as a stronger limestone character than usual. In a rather masculine style but also seamless and suave. Finishes with outstanding length and class, the tannins totally buffered by fruit and minerals. Mounir Saouma noted that this wine has been great since the beginning.

Lucien Le Moine Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Then quite tightly wound and powerful on the palate, showing spicy and saline elements but no easy sweetness. A classic young Clos de la Roche: dry and imploded, in a distinctly rocky style. Even more masculine in the early going than the Clos Saint-Denis and yet this wine already communicates outstanding dimension.
