Vinous (97)Many years ago I bought two or three bottles of the 1985 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru for a price that now begs belief. All of them were poured for two people: my wife and I. This last bottle is sublime. That same old spellbinding nose that envelops the senses, quite lush in keeping with the vintages, beautifully defined with traces of hung game creeping in. There is great tannic structure here, again, just a little gaminess towards the finish, but so elegant and refined that you instantly fall for its charms. Tasted at home in Guildford. |

Vinous (99)It’s almost impossible to imagine that the 1985 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Storica has just celebrated its thirty-sixth birthday. It displays a brilliant ruby red color and amazing clarity in the glass, with only the slightest bricking around the rim. The bouquet alone is enough to keep you at the edge of your seat, as if opening a cedar treasure box to find dusty rose and sour cherry offset by spiced orange, crushed dried sage and just the slightest hint of animal musk. This is total class, cool-toned and poised, seeming to hover across the palate with an air of red inner florals, as tart woodland berries mix with hints of black tea and lemon oils. There’s a bolt of nervous acidity that keeps the experience remarkably fresh, but also adds a highly attractive sweet and sour note. And finally, while structured and youthful in feel, it finishes completely fresh, vibrant even, with dried currants enlivened by nuances of grapefruit and mint that linger on and on. This is an experience wine in every sense of the word, hailing from a dry and warm harvest yet exemplifying the purity of Sangiovese, as well as its ability to mature for well over three decades. The 1985 La Storica comes directly from the winery’s aging vault, and it was reconditioned with a new cork in 2000. |

Vinous (91)A dark, rich wine, the 1985 La Romanée opens with a rich, soy-infused mélange of aromas and flavors to match its demi-glace-like richness. Brown spices, licorice and worn-in leather add further shades of nuance. The 1985 is fully mature and exquisite, especially in the way layer after layer unfolds in the glass. This is a very beautiful, mature Burgundy that has reached its peak. |

Vinous (94)The 1985 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a wine that I last tasted back in May 2004 at a vertical in London. For me, this is the best vintage of that decade. The bouquet is earthy and spicy, not dissimilar to Christophe Roumier’s of that same year, although without the same delineation and complexity. This feels more feral and yet remains very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied and it is clearly at its peak of maturity. There is patently much more vigour than the 1988 tasted a few months earlier. There is weight and presence here, the tannins a tad rough around the edges and there is a dab of warmth towards the finish. Yet, you cannot deny the sheer enjoyable nature of this 1985 that in some ways harks back to the legendary wines of the 1940s and 1950s. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)Both 1982 Champagnes are utterly spellbinding. It is amazing to taste these wines at 30 years of age and see that their signatures are all very much intact. Of course, the magnum format is so ideal for Champagne. The 1982 Krug Vintage is warm, toasty and totally expressive, with gorgeous exotic orange peel and white truffle overtones. This is one of my very favorite Krug vintages. Although fully mature, the 1982 is going to continue to develop at a glacial pace. The 1982 Dom Pérignon is just a little more focused and vibrant in style. Here it is the wine’s salivating minerality that really sings. It, too, is quite youthful and vibrant for its age. What a flight. |

Vinous (96)A wine of real power and intensity, the 1985 Dom Pérignon Rosé is exceptionally beautiful tonight. The flavors are rich, layered and expansive. Hints of caramel and hazelnut add nuance to a core of expressive red berry fruit, but it is the wine’s textural generosity that is most impressive considering the 1985 is now thirty years old. The 1985 is not an eternal wine, but it has reached a glorious plateau of maturity. Wow! |

Wine Advocate (100)The Romanee-Conti is utterly mind blowing. The heady, intoxicating bouquet delivered penetrating and sublime aromas that were even more intense than those from the La Tache. On the palate, there is a veritable smorgasbord of earthly and heavenly delights. Needless to say, it is very rich, very opulent, and very concentrated. Red burgundy and red wine do not get any better than this. My guess is that it will peak between 1990 and 2005, as it is a bit more forward than either the La Tache or Richebourg. |

Vinous (96)1985 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano—Medium ruby. The 1985 Santo Stefano is an outrageous, decadent wine. Vinous (98)The 1985 Musigny Grand Cru is a vintage that I have been lucky enough to drink before, and this bottle is almost identical; indeed, it is highly likely that it originated from the same case. Since the wine has been decanted for a few hours, the bouquet is more immediate than the previous bottle, featuring ethereal, airy red fruit, spellbinding delineation and incredible focus, all wrapped up with almost Les Amoureuses–like precocity. The palate is perfectly balanced with ineffably fine tannins. The fruit is not powerful but intense, revealing hints of red cherry and crushed strawberry, every atom suffused by minerals. This bottle actually showed a little more stalky character than the last and is also a tad more ferrous toward the finish. Yet it remains a magnificent wine even if, dare I say, the 1985 Bonnes-Mares might be just as good or better (at least in magnum). Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong. |

Vintage Tastings (95)The 1985 Drouhin Musigny was again a better bottle than the last time I had this wine just three months ago. What's up with Drouhin showing better in Hong Kong? Maybe it likes the humidity here. It was the most open of this flight, in '85 fashion, sweet and gamy and full of Pinot fruit. Caramel kisses and damp earth rounded out its nutty nose. Paul agreed this was a better bottle than the one he had recently as well; in fact, I think it was the same bottle we shared in New York, or same batch. This bottle was in a perfect spot and still ascending. |

Experience the remarkable artistry of the Karuizawa Single Malt 1985 Cask 2364 1985; a true testament to the craft of Japanese whisky. Distilled in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, at the now-defunct Karuizawa distillery, this 1985 vintage quickly gathered international appraisal for its distinctive flavour profile and rare availability. The whisky matures in Spanish sherry casks, which imparts a deep, rich hue alongside notes of dried fruit, earthy oak, and intoxicating spices. This elegant single malt reveals its robust, yet balanced, complexity through a harmony of dark chocolate, toasty nuts, and a hint of exotic citrus. The Karuizawa Single Malt 1985 Cask 2364 1985 not only represents a glorious era of whisky-making but is also an enticing collector's item, its value only heightened by the distillery's closure in 2011. This spiritually Japanese dram is a distinguished masterpiece blending history, tradition, and unparalleled craftsmanship. |

Wine Advocate (94)This is one of the greatest wines of the vintage, possibly the slowest-to-mature wine of the vintage, and potentially its longest lived. Tasted next to Petrus twice in 2002, the 1985 Lafleur seemed like it came from a different vintage. It was not herbal like the Petrus, far denser, the color more saturated than the Petrus, and more body, volume, and intensity than the Petrus. In fact, the Petrus looked like an emaciated, herbaceous, thin cousin to Lafleur. This wine is very special, with notes of figs, plums, minerals, violets, black raspberries, and licorice. Still a dense saturated ruby/purple with full body, great purity, and fabulous fruit, this is an immense vintage for Lafleur, and certainly ranks one of the great wines this small micro-estate has ever produced. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030. Last tasted, 8/02. |

The palate was very taut with lots of minerals, alcohol and acid. It was hot and seemed young with its enormous alcohol concentration |

Wine Spectator (97)Defines elegance and sophistication with distinct tea, earthy chocolate, cherry and cassis flavors that gently unfold onthe palate. It's impeccibly well balanced with soft, smooth yet firm tannins that give it structure and depth. Should age 20 or 30 years, maybe longer. Tasted twice; first bottle was "corked". |
