While the wood treatment is certainly evident it's more subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its combination of relatively high-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouth coating, hugely long and very firmly structured finish. It's going to be interesting in 25 or 30 years' time to see which of these is the better wine, assuming that one of them will be!

It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet of brambly red fruit, briar, wild heather and light crushed rock aromas; more tertiary scents (damp moss?) emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannin and just a slight lactic tincture on the entry, layers of tart red fruit infused with minerals and even a cheeky hint of Turkish Delight on the finish. This feels very long and tender.

It has quite an earthy, sous-bois tinged bouquet that is very well defined, the 60% whole bunches nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart opening, and the 10% new oak lends discreet lift toward a persistent finish spiced with a dash of black pepper. Excellent.

Containing 70% whole bunches, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of Les Communes, Les Saules and Bossières. It has a very floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the brambly red fruit, and hints of lavender tucked in just beneath. The medium-bodied palate is strict and linear, offering quite firm tannin and perhaps just requiring a little more finesse toward the finish at the moment. This is quite an uncompromising Village Cru, but intellectually it is very satisfying.

The 2017 Meursault Village is a brilliant young wine, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, green apple, dried white flowers, toasted sesame and hazelnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and elegantly satiny, with racy acids, discrete structuring dry extract, and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Raphaël Coche thinks this will prove reminiscent of the domaine's 2001—in so far as the 2001 drank well in its youth, but despite its youthful precocity, it proved surprisingly long lived. Here, the expressiveness of the vintage meets the tensile, age-worthy Coche style to great effect. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes.

There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has a lot of fruit on the nose (mulberry, red plums and crushed strawberry) and comes across plush and quite oaky, with a little reduction to address. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. The oak may well be absorbed with age, allowing the fruit to shine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The palate is very well balanced, a live wire of acidity, tensile and mineral-driven with a judicious touch of spice toward the persistent finish. This is very classy and persistent, translating the terroir with style, a wine that flirts with profundity. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.
