Experience the masterful harmony of old-world tradition and modern winemaking elegance with the Christophe Curtat Saint Joseph Nomade 2012. Crafted with the utmost respect for terroir by prodigious Rhône winemaker Christophe Curtat, who received tutelage under renowned Marcel Guigal, this vintage hails from the heart of France's Saint Joseph appellation. Born of 100% Syrah grapes, meticulous cultivation methods ensured only top quality fruits were hand-picked. The wine was then aged for a generous period in oak barrels, allowing for the integration of subtle warmth and layered complexity.

The resultant wine is a true masterpiece, delivering waves of dark fruits, mineral hints and replete with nuanced notes of rich spice and pepper. On the palate, it boasts an excellent structure, married with a precise balance of tannins and acidity, showcasing the immense potential from this relatively small, superior vineyard. A bottle of Christophe Curtat Saint Joseph Nomade 2012 truly exemplifies fine Rhône winemaking at its zenith.

Vinous (92)

(made with 80% whole clusters): Vivid ruby. Intense red fruit and floral pastille aromas are complemented by smoky Indian spices and zesty minerality. Shows impressive clarity and depth on the palate, with sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors becoming spicier with aeration. Finishes with youthful tannic grip and impressive length, leaving a suave violet note behind. Gonon told me he thinks this wine is in the process of shutting down as the tannins are much more pronounced now than they were in the early fall, and he advises waiting another three years or so before checking back in on it.

Wine Advocate (94)

Looking even better than it did from barrel, the 2016 Saint Joseph was singing last summer when I tasted it at the domaine. Truffle-like earthy florals accent peppery herbs, blending seamlessly with olives and raspberries on the nose. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, voluptuous even, yet balanced and vibrant, with a long, mouthwatering finish.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2017 Saint Joseph offers up effusive notes of mint, black olives and black cherries. As usual, the Gonons have managed to combine herbal, savory and fruity elements into a compelling, harmonious whole. The wine is medium to full-bodied and fully ripe, perhaps not quite as lush and fruit-driven as the 2018, but it's still a tremendous success, capped off by gentle tannins and salted licorice on the long finish.

Deep violet. Intensely perfumed, mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, licorice, exotic spices and potpourri, along with an exotic suggestion of incense. Stains the palate with concentrated black raspberry, cassis, bitter cherry and fruitcake flavors that are given spicy lift by a suggestion of white pepper. Moving to the flagship, the 2019 Saint Joseph got a big “wow” in my notes, and this is the finest wine I’ve tasted from these hard-working brothers. Awesome red and black fruits, ground pepper, and hints of game and meatiness all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, with perfect balance, silky tannins, and one heck of a finish. This brilliant Saint Joseph is one of the top wines in the appellation and can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 years.

James Suckling (98)

St. Joseph is often declared to be a second tier appellation in the Northern Rhone, but here’s proof that it can play in the first league of the region. This has an incredibly deep nose of ripe blackberries, other forest berries and smoke. On the barely full-bodied palate it is simultaneously rich, focused and extremely complex with very graceful fine tannins and stacks of stony minerality at the breathtakingly fresh finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

A new acquisition, the inky/purple-tinged 2003 St.-Joseph exhibits tremendous flavor intensity, loads of body, amazing glycerin, and high alcohol. It should drink well for 10-12 years.
