Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Richebourg 2011 has a more extravagant, bold, multilayered bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, hints of undergrowth and light marine influences coming in to play: very complex. The palate still has some unresolved oak on the entry, but there is great tension and vibrancy here, the tannins fine and lending this great tension. I would not broach a bottle now because there is so much to give in the future. Just like in the blind Amoureuses tasting in Holland, here Bichot proves itself as one of the top-flight producers. Bravo!

Approaching perfection, this wine is inky, bluish/purple-colored to the rim, offering up notes of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. A touch of roasted espresso bean is also present. The wine has great concentration, a magnificent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This beauty seems to be in mid-adolescence with at least 25-30 years of life ahead.

Antonio Vallana Spanna Cambi Raudii 1954 is a remarkable Piedmontese red of superior ageing potential. Produced by the esteemed Antonio Vallana e Figlio, a winery celebrated for its devotion to traditional winemaking techniques and native grape cultivars, this wine is an embodiment of the winery's commitment to authenticity. Famed Nebbiolo, albeit here locally known as Spanna, meticulously hand-harvested from vineyards in Alto Piemonte forms the foundation of this rich vintage. Maturation in large, old Slavonian oak barrels develops a richly complex palate presenting notes of wild berries, spice, and leather. This Antonio Vallana Spanna Cambi Raudii 1954 is a potent potable, layered with nuances of violets, cherries and tar, all encased within a sturdy tannic structure. This wine represents not only an exquisite tasting experience but also a piece of oenological history. Indisputably, Antonio Vallana Spanna Cambi Raudii 1954 is a consummation of finesse and heritage.

It's as though the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin have switched places in 2006 as here the nose is positively kaleidoscopic with a huge range of aromas and spice elements along with a hint of menthol. There is excellent freshness and vibrancy to the pure, round, rich and focused full-bodied flavors that carry obvious muscle and minerality on the deep, powerful and hugely long finish. This is an extremely impressive effort and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Not surprisingly, this hasn't changed a great deal since my last review except that the length is now even more phenomenal and the supporting tannins are a bit more apparent. While it's true that the balance is so good that that this could be enjoyed now, it would be unfortunate to leave so much upside potential unrealized and thus I would advise waiting for at least 5 more years first though it should easily be capable of rewarding 8 to 10. Tasted several times since my original review with consistent notes in the sense that they have become progressively more positive.

Next came the 2007 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau. Unlike the Mugnier, the bouquet needs no time to warm up, exploding with enticing scents of raspberry, mulberry, touches of camphor and undergrowth, and, after 30 minutes, hints of Japanese green tea and clove. Exquisite in definition, this remained captivating throughout the evening. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, cohesive and, for the 2007 vintage, quite robust and powerful. The velvety texture toward the finish highlights the lack of concentration in the Musigny. An utterly sublime Chambertin that is drinking perfectly now, the 2007 possesses the substance to mature another 20 years in bottle.

100% new oak. Not the flash appeal of the Clos de Bèze and it's so much more youthful but it’s a huge success in 2011. Chewy end and more muscular but it’s all there for the taking – except that it’s a bit tighter than Clos de Bèze so may be better to concentrate on the latter for the moment. Vibrant and resonant.

Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Rousseau's 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru has a fruit-driven bouquet laden with black cherries, crushed strawberry, ink and a touch of bay leaf. As it aerates, the fruit seems to take more of a back seat and the terroir comes through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very pure and elegant, iron fist/velvety glove and so forth. This is what a grand cru should be. Utterly seductive and captivating, its satin texture might lure you into opening a bottle too soon. Give it a decade to admire Rousseau at full flight. Tasted September 2017.

Bright medium red. Very pure but very reticent nose hints at blueberry, raspberry, licorice, game and woodsmoke. Delivers a compelling combination of fine-grained texture, deep sweetness and restrained power; still youthfully compressed but already boasts thrilling mouthfilling perfume of tart red fruits, spices and saline minerality. This spectacular Chambertin broadens out on the back half without giving any impression of weight. A wine of uncommon depth and class, with no sign of overripeness. With its salty, crushed-rock minerality, this wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and stimulates the salivary glands on the sensationally long finish.

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is just a glorious success. Vivid red fruit, Morello cherries, wild strawberry and pressed violets on the nose, the aromatics here feel so animated and exquisitely defined. The palate is perfectly balanced with a killer line of acidity: crystalline red fruit, filigree tannins and more freshness than it knows what to do with. There is a sense of "channeled intensity" in this Chambertin and whilst there is no question that it is a 20- to 30-years wine, I felt no guilt in polishing this off in its youth. Tasted at Maison de Colombier in Beaune.

The 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze offers alluring aromas of licorice, mint, vanilla, plum paste, cherry preserves and rose petals, and seduces the palate with silky, incredibly refined texture and several octaves of fruit, herbal, floral and mineral notes, leading to a reverberative finish in which fruit pit and stony, chalky elements lend a sense of dark, weighty authority and an umami-like, meaty savor promotes uncontrollable salivation. No layering or mixing of metaphors can hope to do justice to the layering and concatenation of flavors on display.

The 1999 Clos de la Roche from Armand Rousseau went through an awkward youth, when it felt hard and rather disjointed. Now with 15 years on the clock, it is showing better than it used to. The nose is broody and taciturn at first, eventually revealing dusky, brambly red fruit with hints of cola and soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy core of red fruit and well-judged acidity. The tannins are much finer than I recall, having softened with time, and there is an appealing weightless intensity toward the finish. No, it is not one of the Charles Rousseau’s best 1999s, but it is finally beginning to show its class. Drink now-2020+. Tasted January 2014.

(aged in 75% new oak, vs. 15% for the Clos des Ruchottes and 0% for the preceding wines; the Clos de Beze and Chambertin here always get 100% new oak): Good full, deep red. Lovely tangy perfume of cherry, raspberry, red licorice, fresh herbs, rose petal and spicy oak. Dense, sweet and fine, with an obvious new oak element nicely carried by the wine's concentration of fruits and flowers. Offers an uncanny combination of seamless texture and power. Most impressive today on the firmly structured, slowly building finish, which features fine-grained tannins and a complex saline and spice perfume. A beauty.

Bright medium red, a bit darker than the Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Château. Darker, spicier and more complex on the nose, conveying a suggestion of Brochon power. Medium red. Red fruits and tobacco on the nose, with some funky hints of truffley evolution. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then classically dry but more harmonious in the middle palate than the nose suggests. Clamps down on the finish, showing a cool and slightly ungiving character and an edge of acidity. I expected a bit more expansiveness and sweetness but Cyrielle Rousseau noted that she and her father Eric find their 1999s rather ungiving so far. She told me that she opened this bottle about six hours before I tasted it and predicted that it would be better the next day. She also described this Mazy as a funny wine, like a clown.

The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot.

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a thrilling bouquet struck through with mineral-rich red berry fruit that teasingly takes time to unfurl in the glass; you can sense the limestone, and hints of graphite emerge later. This is reduction free with an exuberant and highly complex nose of spice, earth and well-layered red pinot fruit aromas that display a background hint of plum. There is fine richness to the pure and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate with an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract on the gorgeously complex finish. This is finer than the Clos de Vougeot and just as complex if somewhat less firmly structured though this will also require plenty of cellar time.

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru is very pretty, opening in the glass with notes of sweet cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, rose and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. Like most of Charles Lachaux's 2015s, this is shutting down, but it should be exceptional in the fullness of time. This is produced from a parcel in Rouges du Bas: one of the steeper, higher-altitude parts of Echézeaux, where the soil is thinner and the wines tend to be more tensile.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet of brambly red fruit, briar, wild heather and light crushed rock aromas; more tertiary scents (damp moss?) emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannin and just a slight lactic tincture on the entry, layers of tart red fruit infused with minerals and even a cheeky hint of Turkish Delight on the finish. This feels very long and tender.

Vinous (90+)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot.

Vinous (96-98)

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has a thrilling bouquet struck through with mineral-rich red berry fruit that teasingly takes time to unfurl in the glass; you can sense the limestone, and hints of graphite emerge later. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite piquant in style, leading to an edgy, slightly chalky finish that bristles with energy. This has great potential as a poised Ruchottes.

Burghound (92-94)

This is reduction free with an exuberant and highly complex nose of spice, earth and well-layered red pinot fruit aromas that display a background hint of plum. There is fine richness to the pure and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate with an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract on the gorgeously complex finish. This is finer than the Clos de Vougeot and just as complex if somewhat less firmly structured though this will also require plenty of cellar time.

Wine Advocate (94+)

Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet of brambly red fruit, briar, wild heather and light crushed rock aromas; more tertiary scents (damp moss?) emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannin and just a slight lactic tincture on the entry, layers of tart red fruit infused with minerals and even a cheeky hint of Turkish Delight on the finish. This feels very long and tender.

Vinous (94+)

Red-ruby. Spicy black fruits, cocoa powder, violet and spices on the primary nose. A step up in volume, sweetness and depth from the Suchots, with very primary grapey, minerally flavors and hints of exotic fruits. As unevolved as this grand cru is today, it already shows lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very long and ripe on the back end, with the firm tannins covered by sappy fruits and spices.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

Ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of cassis, violet, bitter chocolate, espresso, and nutty, spicy oak. Very closed in on itself today, giving a stronger impression of acidity than the Suchots. Subtle hints of minerals and spices. Quite backward for the vintage, with a firm tannic spine.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Very good deep red. Much less expressive today than the Suchots, hinting at black raspberry and vanillin oak. Then dense and sappy in the mouth, with dark berry and spice flavors offering terrific vivacity. Broad, palate-coating wine without any impression of heaviness. Finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)

Good bright, dark red. Dark berries, violet and a whiff of fresh peppercorn on the nose, complicated by mineral and oak notes. Sweet, creamy fruit is given definition by firm acidity. Suave, fine-grained, essentially round wine, showing the deeper pitch of the warm year. Finishes with subtly powerful, building length and fully ripe tannins.

Burghound (96)

The strikingly elegant nose offers the most complexity of these 2012s with its well-layered aromas of spice, plum, violet, dark cherry and sandalwood. There is a beguilingly velvety texture to the lightly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess plenty of mouth coating dry extract before terminating in a firm and impeccably well-balanced finish. Note that this classy beauty will also require ample patience.
