Vinous (94+)Golden yellow. Scents of apple blossom, white raisin and quince complicated by a hint of honeyed botrytis. Luscious, candied papaya fruit shows a velvety texture, but mouthwatering acidity keeps the palate fresh. At once dense and light, with mineral salts pervading the elegant, very long finish. A superb auslese and one of the best of the vintage. |

Wine Advocate (92)Crushed stone, sage, green tea, as well as black tea smokiness envelop the fresh apple, cherry and lime aromas of a Prum 2011 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett, but fruit comes to the fore on an infectiously juicy, buoyant, and satin-textured palate, with smoky, herbal, alkaline and crushed stone elements setting-up a positively shimmering sense of dynamic interactivity that persists into a bracing and succulently-sustained finish. The residual sugar here is impeccably-integrated, as was the case with the corresponding generic Kabinett (and in fact, at just over 30 grams, it’s analytically only a tad higher), and even at 9.5% alcohol this positively dances across your tongue. Look to be charmed for at least the better part of two decades by this excellent value. |

Vinous (96)Riding shotgun, the 2011 Westhofener Brunnenhauschen Abtserde Riesling Grosses Gewachs is a completely different wine. This is razor-sharp on the Zen-like nose of Granny Smith apples, struck flint notes and citrus peel; you could almost describe it as uncompromising. The palate has a citric spine and tastes quite saline, with hints of orange peel. Harmonious, penetrating and ethereal, this is a brilliant Riesling from Keller, but one that you have to meet on its own terms. |

Wine Advocate (91)Lime, apple, and grapefruit with a strong influence of their skins and pips renders Keller's 2011 Westhofener Morstein Riesling Grosses Gewachs a remarkably pithy and piquant mouthful. Density and sheer persistence this also has in spades - it's almost muscle-bound - but I'll be very interested to see whether it picks up refinement, differentiation and, for want of a better word (one Keller himself favors), elegance over the course of coming decade. There is an austerely stony undertone to this entire performance; and one that didn't dissipate in a bottle that had been opened for a day. (Incidentally, this is the first vintage of Morstein to be supplemented by a portion of sixty-year-old vines that Keller recently acquired and grafted over to Riesling.) |
