Founded in 1958 and now representing a group of 51 growers across 100 ha of vineyards, Produttori del Barbaresco under the helm of Aldo Vacca has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of Nebbiolo wines. It can now be said without any doubt that the estate is one of the best winemaking co-operatives in the world, having become a household name among top restaurants and fine wine collectors alike.
As a producer that has been 'hitting it out of the ballpark these past years with a string of excellent vintages' (WA), there has been a lot of hype around the new release of Barbaresco 2019 from Produttori del Barbaresco due to the quality of the vintage but thankfully, as Greg Sherwood MW confirms, it 'does not disappoint'.
Although not yet scored by the Wine Advocate, this 2019 scores a very impressive 95 points from Sherwood, marking what is expected to be the start of a trio of outstanding vintages. In stark contrast to the 2018s, this 2019 is 'bold and punchy from start to finish' (GS).
As opposed to 2016, where Barbaresco seemed to do exceptionally well across the board, 2019 saw more challenging changes in climatic conditions which led to terroir variation shining through more extremely. With the ability to source fruit from across such a wide range of the best vineyards in Barbaresco, it is no surprise that Produttori del Barbaresco were able to craft a 'very serious piece of kit with high aspirations and serious intent' (GS).
Camphor, rose, cedar and ripe red berry aromas come to the forefront on this beautiful Barbaresco. Smooth and elegantly structured, the focused palate features ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and white pepper alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced.

High expectations for this new release coming from such a highly lauded vintage, the 2019 does not disappoint. Bold and punchy from start to finish, the nose boasts a multi-layered melange of lavender, violets, ripe red and black cherries, botte oak spice, potpourri and perfumed bathroom soaps. Seductive and muscular, the palate is as bold as it gets with a rich vein of textured mineral tannins over dense, sweet pithy berry fruits before the finish is overwhelmed by a chalky, spicy, stony minerality. This is a very serious piece of kit with high aspirations and serious intent that is sure to seduce serious Piedmont Nebbiolo collectors.

The 2019 Barbaresco is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 15-20 years, give or take. Sweet, floral and open, the 2019 offers lovely brightness and energy to match its mid-weight, nervy feel. Sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and savory notes all grace this soft, understated Barbaresco from the Produttori.
