Tua Rita
About Tua Rita
Founded by Rita and Virgilio in 1984, just as the Super Tuscan wave was taking off, Tua Rita started with just 2 hectares of Sangiovese and has now grown its acreage to around 30 hectares to include Bordeaux varieties and even Syrah.
With the rise of Sassicaia, it quickly became clear that Bolgheri was a region where international varietals could thrive. Tua Rita caught on and in 1988 added another 2 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to their holdings, some of which were initially sold to Sassicaia! The estate only began bottling their own wines in 1992 with the help of one of the best consultant oenologists in Italy, Luca D’Attoma. Together with the meticulous care and attention that Rita and Virgilio showered on their vines, Tua Rita quickly became one of the most successful Super Tuscans, standing toe to toe with the likes of Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia.

Vinous (96)The 2012 Redigaffi jumps from the glass with explosive dark blue/blackish fruit. Rich, voluptuous and impeccably textured in the glass, the 2012 boasts massive depth and concentration, yet retains tons of freshness. Silky tannins round out a finish laced with melted road tar, herbs and leather. For such a big wine, the Redigaffi is remarkably complex and nuanced. The 2012 was aged in 100% new, thick-staved Darnajou barrels, which are seldom seen in Italy but widely used throughout Napa Valley and elsewhere. In some recent vintages I have slightly preferred the Syrah over the Redigaffi, but in 2012 the wines are both fabulous. Simply put, the 2012 Redigaffi is a stunner. |
