Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2010 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2010 Pinot Noir's nose is just a little closed giving mulberry and black cherry hints with accents of garrique, violets, mossy bark and some clove hints. Medium bodied, it has great structure with medium to firm fine grained tannins and good but not over-whelming acid freshness complimenting the black and red fruit flavors, finishing with some mineral notes.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2012 (12x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17.5)Coolest season for a long time. But a settled autumn. Mid cherry red. Compact with a real sense of depth and much more to come. Has the classic Ata Rangi smoky/savoury aroma along with the still-fresh fruit and more spice here. Juicy and rich-fruited on the palate and mouth-watering on the long finish. Stony/mineral aftertaste.

2013 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2013 (12x75cl) James Suckling (98-99)A significant pinot noir that displays immense quality, depth and completeness tasted ahead of bottling. Very complex indeed with exotic spices, meaty charcuterie and game meats. A fabulous array of different cherry fruit characters, hints of citrus zest and saffron plus some foresty bracken to add. The palate has immense energy and depth yet treads lightly on balanced structure and even shape, the tannins wind out and around supple flesh, gathering together and fanning at the finish, the acidity is bright throughout and the finish holds long. A masterpiece. Commanding and seductive pinot noir at its finest.

2014 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2014 (12x75cl) Raymond Chan (100)Full, even, black-hued ruby-red with youthful purple tints. The nose is very full with softly concentrated and layered aromas of rich, ripe, dark red berries and cherries along with nuances of dark red plums entwined with fragrant violet florals, fresh herb and spicy detail. The aromatics blossom to reveal notes of raspberry liqueur, earth and minerals. This exudes richness allied to elegance and finesse. Medium-full bodied, vibrantly succulent and lusciously sweet fruit flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit are harmoniously melded with flavours of ripe dark plums and fragrant violet florals, dark herbs, spices and red licorice. The flavours are seamlessly mouthfilling and supported by refined, flowery tannin extraction, and enlivened by poised acidity. This has drive, energy and fine linearity, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained, rich finish of spiced cherries and raspberry liqueur. This is a beautifully rich and succulent, elegantly balanced and refined Pinot Noir with seamless-flowing, ripe flavours of dark berry and cherry fruit with complexing floral and herbal detail. Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from the oldest parcels, 40% Abel clone with the remainder clones 5, Dijon and 10/5, indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20-26 days on skins and aged 11 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2015 (12x75cl) Bob Campbell (99)Very seductive pinot noir combining a sensual, silken texture with layers of complex fruit and savoury flavours. The wine has structure but it is deeply buried within a core of sweet fruit. Dark-fleshed plum, violet, cherry, spice and very subtle fresh herbs are among the more obvious flavours in this supremely complex wine. Outstanding!

2009 |
Chris Ringland Hoffman Shiraz 2009 (6x75cl) Decanter (98)Yet to be released (it was preceded by the 2010). Low yields and favourable February and March weather produced an exceptionally concentrated wine, which spent an unprecedented 63 months in 100% new French oak. It's crammed with vertical strata of telescopic fruit edged with dried herbs and has tremendous palate presence and length. A deep seam of blackcurrant, cassis, red cherry and sloes flexes beneath the surface, while mouthcoating, textured, mineral tannins buttress the finish. A monumental wine.

2005 |
Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Anamorphosis 2005 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (96-99)The Anamorphosis project features Shiraz from Kalimna in the Barossa Valley aged in new oak from four of France’s finest coopers. Like most of the other R Wines, it has exceptionally creative packaging. There will be 100 cases of the 2005 Shiraz which will spend 30 months in new French oak. It was sourced from vineyards with 40- and 100-year-old vines. Opaque purple in color, it offers up an intense perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Voluptuous, thick rich, and full-bodied, it is a powerful yet seamless expression of Shiraz from a great terroir. It will age effortlessly for 20 years but can be enjoyed young because of its mammoth fruit. It is a winemaking tour de force.

Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Evil Incarnate 2008 (1x150cl) This is sensational with blackberries, blueberries and mineral. Extremely floral, too. Full-bodied but so seamless and refined with polished tannins that just melts into the wine. Goes on for minutes. A subtle and glorious wine that will be a new classic for Napa Valley. An emotional red that touches your soul. Energy. 46% cabernet sauvignon, 31% cabernet franc, 17% petit verdot, and 6% merlot. Very approachable now but better in 2022.

2001 |
Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2001 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (99)The 2001 Syrah Astralis Vineyard may be just as compelling as the 2002. Tighter because of being in the bottle, it is an extraordinary effort that offers the essence of graphite, blackberry liqueur, espresso, and acacia flowers, all combining into an olfactory smorgasbord for the senses. Sensationally concentrated, with sweet tannin, but neither weighty nor over the top as might be expected for a wine of such extreme richness, it is an extraordinarily well-delineated Syrah that should hit its prime in 10-12 years, and last for 30-40. Hail Caesar ... I mean Roman!

2004 |
Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2004 (3x150cl) Wine Advocate (98)One of Australia’s most prodigious Syrahs, Clarendon Hills’ 2004 Syrah Astralis is fashioned from vines planted in 1920, and spends time in 100% new French oak from the cooper, Cadus. It boasts off the charts intensity as well as an opaque purple color, and notes of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, roasted coffee beans, pepper, smoke, and a hint of sweet toasty oak. This full-bodied, rich, intense, backward Syrah needs 2-3+ hours in the decanter if one is going to approach it at this point in its life. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040+.

2005 |
Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2005 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (99)At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

2016 |
Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2016 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (98)The flagship 2016 Syrah Astralis checks as all Syrah that comes from a single vineyard planted in 1920 on more gravelly, clay, and iron-laced soils. Brought up in 90% new French oak, it has a classic, almost restrained bouquet of pure Shiraz goodness, including ripe blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with notes of charred meat, rendered bacon fat, crushed violets, and pepper. Beautifully balanced and full-bodied, it's a Shiraz that seems to have one foot in Côte Rôtie and one foot in the McLaren Vale. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20-30 years. It's the real deal and an incredible expression of Syrah.
