Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a dynamic, up-and-coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares under vines in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It is run by the seventh generation Romain Taupenot alongside his sister, Virginie. Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot runs this domaine with his sister, Virginie.
Viniculture
The average age of the vines are over 50 years old and they follow lutte raisonnée or ‘the reasoned struggle’ principle in the vineyard, meaning chemicals are used only when they are absolutely needed, if ever.
The house style is generally focused on the great purity of fruit and intensity of aromatics in both their reds and whites. Generally known for producing wine from less-celebrated appellations, such as Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain, they champion these underrated wines with great style and class.

This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness. |

Vinous (93)The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. The palate is better with a light spiced opening, good weight and cohesion with black pepper and sea salt infused red fruit. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle. |

I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty.
