Staglin Salus
About Staglin Salus
Founded in 1985 by Shari, Garen, Brandon and Shannon, Staglin Family Vineyard takes pride in the tradition of family ownership; their mission is to produce world-class wines, with the aid of viticulturalist David Abreu, that reflect the distinctive character of their historic Rutherford Bench estate in the Napa Valley. The estate dates back to 1865 and the Staglin Family view themselves modestly as ‘stewards’ of the land, the latest in a historic line. Consequently, they farm the vineyard organically and produce the wines in a state of the art underground production facility.
The wines include a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chardonnay together with a very small amount of Sangiovese, each expressive of the unique characteristics of their Rutherford estate, and reflective of the care and attention invested in their viticultural and production practices.

Vinous (95)The 2019 Chardonnay Estate is superb. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2019 offers up a striking mélange of tangerine peel, passion fruit, pineapple, white flowers and a kiss of French oak, all kicked up in a racy, voluptuous Chardonnay that is immensely captivating. Even with all of its intensity, the 2019 retains gorgeous freshness and tons of nuance. Once again, the Chardonnay is beautifully done. |

Wine Advocate (95-98)The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate may turn out to be one of the finest examples of this cuvee yet made. Already exhibiting complex notes of forest floor, spring flowers, loamy soil and abundant black currant, black raspberry, licorice and charcoal notes, this full-bodied, opulent 2012 shows no hard edges. It should turn out to be spectacular. Both of these 2012s will drink exceptionally well young and last for two decades or more. |

Wine Advocate (97+)Both 2013 Cabernet Sauvignons are in bottle, and both are absolutely magnificent wines, probably the two finest Cabernets made by the Staglins to date. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford (14.9% alcohol) has a stunning fragrance of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers (or is it violets?), sweet blackcurrant and black raspberry fruit, and a layered, opulent, rich and full-bodied mouthfeel. Add to that striking purity, equilibrium, and serious but finely grained tannins, and this is their finest Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon made to date. It has at least 30-40 years of life ahead of it. |

Vinous (96)Staglin's 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, racy and voluptuous, which is to say very much in line with the style of the year. Kirsch, succulent red cherry, mint and spice add layers of nuance, but in this vintage it is the wine's raciness and sweet, silky tannins that give the wine its forward, open-knit personality. Ripeness is pushed to the edge in the 2015, and yet all the elements flow together effortlessly. Even with all of its obvious ripeness an raciness, this is decidedly a mid-weight style of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. |

Vinous (95+)The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another wine in this range that shows the natural breadth and dimension of the year. Ample, powerful and broad, with real depth, the 2016 has a lot to offer. The 2016 hasn't moved much over the last year, so readers will have to be patient. New leather, spice, menthol and sweet dark cherry all build in a rich, textured Cabernet. |

Intensely dark, black fruits fill the glass with the blackberry, blackcurrant, boysenberry and ripe Damson plum taking center stage. Unctuous and resinous, the complex notes of leather, coffee extract, cocoa liquor and crushed rocks are given lift and lightness by an integrated essence of camphor, anise and potpourri. While the palate is initially a bit compact and focused, it quickly blossoms into a wonderfully mouth coating elixir with a fine-grained structure and a lively, granular texture that keeps on keeping on. This 2013 Salus Cabernet Sauvignon is at present a big, structured and tightly wrapped wine that will give and grow when given time and air.
