Roagna
About Roagna
Luca Roagna farms 12 hectares in Piemonte, made up of many different plots based in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo, plus plots in Barbaresco and the Langhe hills. He works the limestone soils organically (but is uncertified) and allows grass to grow between the rows, practising a no-till regime. The wines are made traditionally, with a natural ferment, a long maceration and a long elevage with modest levels of sulfur dioxide. The elevage is in large barrels of 2000–5000 litres, with the last part of ageing taking place in really old barriques.

Vinous (97)The 2008 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is a gorgeous, translucent wine that shows this cool, late-ripening vintage at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, kirsch, hard candy and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, Crichët Pajé was massively tannic and forbidding. The 2008 is the most refined vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Put simply, the 2008 is sublime. Even so, my impression, and hope, is that subsequent vintages will be even better. |

Vinous (94+)The 2012 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is tight and not especially expressive today. In this vintage, the Crichët Pajè is a bit more floral and lighter in structure than it can be. Imagine Burgundy with Nebbiolo acids and tannins. Among other things, that means the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring, in relative terms for this bottling. Despite its reticence, the 2012 is also restrained and so nuanced. I can't wait to see how it develops in bottle. |

Wine Enthusiast (98)Crushed mint, new leather, white truffle and wild berry aromas waft out of the glass on this gorgeous, fragrant wine. Smooth but seriously structured, the focused palate is delicious, delivering crushed Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice. Still youthfully austere, it needs several more years to fully develop but it will age and evolve for decades. An absolutely breathtaking wine. |

Vinous (97)The 2014 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is an absolutely exquisite wine that shows how compelling this vintage is in Barbaresco. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully deep, the 2014 races out of the glass, showing tremendous depth, energy and pedigree. Crushed red-toned fruit, orange peel, rose petal, anise and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop, but its really the wine's balance that impresses more than anything else. It's a super classic wine from Alfredo and Luca Roagna. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)The 2015 Barbaresco Crichet Paje a wine of extreme elegance and seduction. Bright red-tined fruit, rose petal, tobacco, incense and spice lend striking inner perfumed. A wine of soaring aromatic presence and exceptional balance, the 2015 is so impressive, especially in the way it balances exoticism with classicism. Here, too, the balance is quite simply mind-blowing. |

Vinous (96)A new wine, the 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Crichët Pajè is a tiny selection that spends an additional decade in cement and steel prior to being bottled. Wild and exotic, the 2004 is at once mature and yet so young. The closest analogy I can give is an older Champagne that has recently been disgorged. Dark red fruit, tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and pressed rose petals all lend tons of complexity. I can't say I have ever tasted anything quite like this. |

Wine Enthusiast (100)This compelling, fragrant red offers stunning aromas of woodland berry, new leather, pipe tobacco, pressed rose and the barest whiff of tar. The palate shows finesse and complexity, delivering juicy cranberry, red cherry, licorice and baking spice framed in tightly wound, elegant tannins. It's still youthfully austere, with vibrant acidity that promises decades of aging potential. |
