Ramonet
Domaine Ramonet was established in the late 1920s by infamous Pierre Ramonet. It has been recognised for some time as the leading estate in the Chassagne. Now under his grandsons Noel and Jean-Claude they have remained remarkably consistent with superb Chardonnay at all levels. Their masterpiece Montrachet is on the wish list of collectors and wine lovers alike. They also offer some increasingly popular red wine.

Vinous (95)My evening began with Pierre Rovani handing me a glass of Ramonet’s 1992 Bâtard-Montrachet, which was an incredible wine with which to start the night. Served from magnum, it was deeply-colored and packed with fruit and sweet toasted oak notes, showing stunning length on the palate and extraordinary balance. In a word: awesome. |

Burghound (94)An exceptionally attractive and impressively complex white flower, spice and crushed herb aromas are trimmed in noticeable wood toast and lead to rich, nicely powerful and gorgeously detailed flavors of equally impressive depth and excellent finishing persistence. This is a really lovely if just shy of truly compelling Bâtard that is drinking well now though will continue to hold without difficulty in this format, indeed it should be capable of holding for another 20 years. Tasted twice with consistent notes. |

Vinous (88-91)Exotic liqueur-like nose; in a slightly oxidative phase today. Dense and plump, with a captivating honeysuckle flavor. Shows good depth and power, not to mention length, but finishes with a trace of alcoholic bitterness. Still, Noel and I agreed that this, like the Ruchottes, is more typical for its site than most of his other 2003s. (Ramonet's Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet showed a more exaggerated nut skin character and was impossible to assess with confidence, while the impressively fat Le Montrachet was rather heavy as well as a bit tired. I will report on these wines next year after they're in bottle. ). |

Wine Advocate (93)The 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is very attractive, opening up in the decanter to offer a classic young Ramonet bouquet of lemon oil, mint, honeyed pear, white flowers and a framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, with a broad and elegantly glossy attack, but it ranks as a comparatively open-knit rendition of this great wine, without the depth, structure or complexity of the very best vintages. Of course, it's an excellent Bâtard nonetheless. |

Burghound (95)Here the nose is firmly reduced so in the unlikely event you're interested in opening a bottle right away, be sure to give it 30 minutes or so of air and decanting it would be better still. Otherwise, there is slightly better underlying energy to the rich yet nicely detailed, even precise, middleweight plus flavors that also deliver impressive length on the bitter lemon-inflected finale. While this isn't as structured as it usually is, it's still going to need close to a decade if you wish to see the '19 Bâtard at its peak. |

Vinous (92)The 1992 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet continues to entrance, even if I believe it has lost some of its luster in recent years. Here it has an elegant bouquet that feels quite generous and rich for a 1992, a patina of toastiness that complements the citrus fruit. The palate is rounded in the mouth: hints of almond and coconut, perhaps a notch lower in acidity than I might have liked with a subtle honeyed tincture on the finish. It is a gorgeous Bienvenue if not in the same class as the 1988. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune. |

Vinous (92+)Pale straw-yellow color. Peach, flowers, hazelnut, spices and smoky oak on the nose, with some musky mango and green papaya emerging with aeration. Then much tighter in the mouth than the nose suggests; in fact, this is quite dry and youthfully ungiving today, hinting only at fruit pit and showing firm acidity. But this long wine boasts plenty of underlying depth. I'd forget this one for five years. |

Wine Spectator (97)This is powerful and steeped with lemon cake, pear, stone and saline flavors. The racy structure sets the pace, and this builds in intensity to a long, stony, spicy aftertaste. On the austere side, yet with the oiliness and concentration that will allow this to age. Best from 2021 through 2033. |

Burghound (94)Hints of mineral reduction and matchstick character suffuse the elegant aromas of honeysuckle, acacia blossom and spiced pear that are trimmed in wisps of wood and lemon rind. The super-sleek, intense and nicely detailed flavors possess good richness on the citrusy and beautifully long finale where moderate warmth slowly emerges. This elegant effort is perhaps a bit bolder and powerful than is usually the case and a BBM that should age gracefully over the next decade. |

Burghound (94)A touch of matchstick character is present on the cool if ripe aromas of honeysuckle, carnation, lemon-lime and crushed fennel. The supple and caressing medium weight flavors are rich to the point of opulence with excellent density and punch that carries over to the impressively long and sappy finale where the only reproach is again a touch of warmth. I would not describe the '19 BBM as a classic example from Ramonet but it's extremely good nonetheless. |

Vinous (89-91)(from 60- and 35-year-old vines): Bright yellow with a green tinge. Sexy sulfidey complexity to the stone fruit aromas. In a distinctly supple style and the most feminine of the '17s I tasted at Ramonet, conveying lovely sweetness and purity. Terrific fat fruit here, not to mention enticing early balance. |

Burghound (93)(Outstanding) A slightly fresher nose also reflects elusive suggestions of the exotic on the aromas that also display hints of citrus confit, white flower and whiffs of dried herbs. There is better vibrancy and detail as well as more obvious minerality on the medium-bodied flavors that are better-balanced, more persistent and markedly more complex. This is lovely and a wine that should reward 8 to 10 years of cellaring yet one that should be approachable after only 4 to 5 years. |
