    Oddero

Poderi e Cantine Oddero (‘Oddero’ to its friends) has been on a meteoric upwards trajectory over the past decade, winning the attention of numerous critics and savvy collectors alike. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) exclaims that:

"Cristina Oddero is now making the most consistently outstanding wines I have tasted here since I first visited the estate nearly twenty years ago. The trajectory in recent years has been nothing short of remarkable. It's great to see Oddero emerge from a lengthy period in which family tension made it impossible for the wines to achieve their potential. Readers who enjoy fine, classically built wines will want to check out Oddero. Bravo! - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

The 2018 Barolo is terrific. In 2018, the Odderos were not completely convinced of the results across all their sites. Ultimately, they blended all of their vineyard designates into the straight Barolo, with the exception of the Brunate and a Riserva from Vigna Rionda. In the glass, their 2018 is captivating. Exotic aromatics, bright red berry fruit and vibrant acids give the 2018 its considerable allure. Vineyard sites are: Fiasco, Bricco Chiesa, Capalot, Bussia, Villero, Rocche di Castiglione and Monvigliero. Look for this to be one of the under the radar gems of the vintage. I loved it. In fact, the Oddero Barolo is one of the few 2018s readers should not miss. It is a very strong 'buy' in my book.

The 2017 Barolo Brunate is an utterly beguiling wine and one of the highlights of the vintage. Rose petal, cinnamon, blood orange, spice and star anise give the Brunate striking aromatic nuance and a real feeling of exoticism that is so alluring. In 2017, the Brunate is translucent and simply haunting in its beauty. I loved it. The Brunate is the smallest bottling of the Oddero crus. It is well worth the effort of seeking out.

Always a standout wine, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Brunate is a complete wine, and I use that word specifically because it shows balance, freshness, length and structure. It has all the basics of an age-worthy Nebbiolo that promises to increase in complexity and depth with more cellar age. At this young stage, the bouquet is singing with dark fruit, cherry, spice and sweet earth.

The 2019 Barolo Brunate emerges from a tiny half-hectare plot at the highest elevation in the vineyard. It presents a beguiling mix of all the balsamic notes typical of Brunate, along with an extra bit of mid-palate texture that comes from aging in a slightly smaller cask vis-a-vis the other Barolos. Firm tannins need time to soften.

This is an instant classic, and that may be because of the smart decision to harvest later than usual. The 2013 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca is elegant and profound with lots of beauty at every stage of its depths. The Vigna Mondoca is located more or less in the middle of the expansive Bussia cru, which has very thin and light soils that ultimately aid in the quick ripening of the fruit. Historically, this has resulted in super fruit intensity and delicious black fruit flavors. In this edition, we also get more tilled earth and stunning mineral tones. This is a beautiful Barolo Riserva.

Showing the precision and purity of the celebrated Bussia MGA (in Monforte d'Alba), the Oddero 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca has a lifted and largely floral bouquet with pressed rose, spicy potpourri, licorice, cinnamon stick, rosemary sprig and a hint of lavender. The intensity and the purity of the bouquet is beautiful, and although the oak tones play a prominent role at this stage, they will certainly integrate within the elegant, mid-weight texture of this Barolo. The wine ages in 30-hectoliter Austrian oak casks for 30 months. Production is 3,300 bottles.

At nearly ten years of age, the 2012 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a terrific choice for readers who want to enjoy a Rionda with a bit of bottle age. Moreover, the 2012 is a wine of pure charm and seduction, which makes it a joy to taste today. Lavender, rose petal, blood orange, star anise, spice, earthiness and red/purplish fruit convey the inner perfume that is such a Rionda signature. The 2012 doesn't quite have the complexity or structure of some vintages, but that does not attract from its tremendous appeal. There is more than enough energy and tannic grip to ensure for another 15-20 years of fine drinking, maybe more, so readers can drink or hold. The classically austere finish will delight fans of traditionally made Barolo.

Here's a wild ride back in time. The spectacular Oddero 2015 Barolo Riserva Vignarionda opens to magnificent intensity and an impressive level of no-holds-barred openness or generosity. You can age the wine further, but honestly, it tastes beautiful right now. The 2015 vintage carries a lot of extra fruit weight and shows broad shoulders. That supportive textural richness gives rise to dark fruit, dried blackberry, cured tobacco and candied chestnut. The bouquet is an infusion of fruit complexity and budding evolution. This is a bottle you could cozy up to sometime during the chilly winter months. Production is 3,500 bottles.

The 2005 Barolo Villero offers excellent depth in its dark fruit, spices and minerals, with good richness that carries through to the long finish. The wine’s balance is commendable; all that is lacking is a measure of the character that this great vineyard is capable of. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero's 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse - at least, it does today. Even so, there is plenty of Nebbiolo character and classic, old-school austerity.
