    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

Red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry and smoked meat; smells concentrated! Then sweet and quite penetrating on the palate, with a slightly tart and reserved character to its fruit, due in large part to the wine's rather powerful acidity. Finishes very pure and long, with plenty of flesh. This reminded me of a much more suave version of the Latricieres.

A cool and highly restrained nose of spice, plum, underbrush and animale notes displays an ample amount of wood influence. The driving minerality of the openly muscular and hugely proportioned flavors is patently obvious and it continues onto the mouth coating and breathtakingly long finish. I very much like the balance here and while it can't quite match the sheer depth of material evidenced by the Chapelle, it's close and like the Chapelle I would suggest that this is very definitely not a good candidate for early consumption.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has more amplitude on the nose compared to the Clos-de-Bèze, offering layers of red berry fruit, briar, tobacco and light roasted chestnut aromas. This is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. Like the Clos-de-Bèze, the fruit is a little backward at the moment, though there is substance here. It feels tightly coiled, but the structure and density on the finish suggest that it should develop in bottle. Maybe a little more persistence on the aftertaste would not have gone amiss, though that is the leitmotif of the vintage.

The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru has a magnificent bouquet with delineated redcurrant, raspberry and strawberry scents, quite pixelated in style, very focused and shimmering with tension. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine but firm tannins that frame some exquisite red fruit with real mineralité that just floods through on the finish. Brilliant.

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year.

(two barrels produced, vs. a normal eight): Bright, pale yellow. Vibrant aromas of lemon gelato and wild herbs. Very complex, pure and refined, boasting an utterly silky, seamless texture to its intense citrus peel, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Really outstanding inner-mouth energy here, followed by a slowly mounting finish that saturates the taste buds. A great wine in the making, but not for drinking anytime soon. (I found the 2017 version a bit juicier and fruitier, and there will be ten barrels of the younger vintage as the crop level was generous.) According to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, 2017 has more sweetness as a vintage, but while the '17 Chevalier-Montrachet is round, opulent and tasty, the '16 is extremely pure, fresh and linear, and will expand with time in the cellar. But even today it's silky, tactile, edge-free and extremely long.

Honeyed fruits, green fig, acacia and clove on the nose. Glossy on the palate – the fruit is sweet and succulent. Though the oak is powerful and smoky, it is matched by the intensity of fruit and is thus harmonious. Chalky structure and bright acidity build through to a long, lithe and toasty finish.

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is beautifully defined on the nose, featuring wonderful crushed limestone and gunflint scents that permeate the green apple aromas. Very focused and intense. The palate is extremely well balanced with a powerful opening, very saline and so full of energy. Enormous weight and presence toward the finish. This is an outstanding Chevalier-Montrachet from Jadot.

The king of the cellar on the white side of the ledger is the 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Les Demoiselles (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a striking wine that unfurls in the glass with notes of citrus oil, white flowers, buttered popcorn, chalky soil tones, beeswax and spices. Full-bodied, multidimensional and layered, it's muscular and concentrated, with racy acids, an abundance of structuring dry extract and a long, resonant finish. It is worth a special effort to seek out.

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is a step up from the Bâtard-Montrachet in terms of complexity and mineralité. Yellow plum and pressed flower hints emerge and lend more complexity with time. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. This Chevalier gathers momentum towards a detailed, lightly spiced finish with just the right amount of extract. The 2021 has real pedigree.

Beautifully concentrated, this even has a bit of baby fat on it now. That's just fine as that provides a landing pad for the tangy tannins and racy acidity in this cuv e. The vines sit in iron-rich soils which give a slightly burly edge to the mouthfeel, despite the lush ripeness. For those preferring richer Pinot styles, this will show well now. For those seeking more finesse and multi-dimensional aromatic development, give this five years or so. 2023-38

Jadot's 2017 Corton Grèves Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is undeniably charming, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, warm spices, espresso roast and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with juicy acids, a generous core of fruit and a supple, giving profile. This will be hard to resist in its youth.

Excellent powerful but fresh purple. There is power to the nose but of the right sort, even some nobility. Pretty rich on the palate a very dark raspberry fruit, possible a dusting of chocolate but the important things is that the structure is in the right place and very well balanced. And not the fierce tannins that you can find here. Tasted: November 2021

The 2012 Corton Greves wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure power. Rich and seamless to the core, the 2012 boasts tremendous intensity. Dark red fruit, smoke, iron and blood orange meld into higher-tones of floral notes on the finish that add an attractive upper register. The low yields of the year have given the Greves softer contours than is typically the case. Next to the Pougers, the Greves is silky, feminine and gracious.

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

Jadot's 2017 Corton Grèves Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is undeniably charming, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, warm spices, espresso roast and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with juicy acids, a generous core of fruit and a supple, giving profile. This will be hard to resist in its youth.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Excellent powerful but fresh purple. There is power to the nose but of the right sort, even some nobility. Pretty rich on the palate a very dark raspberry fruit, possible a dusting of chocolate but the important things is that the structure is in the right place and very well balanced. And not the fierce tannins that you can find here. Tasted: November 2021

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2012 Corton Greves wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure power. Rich and seamless to the core, the 2012 boasts tremendous intensity. Dark red fruit, smoke, iron and blood orange meld into higher-tones of floral notes on the finish that add an attractive upper register. The low yields of the year have given the Greves softer contours than is typically the case. Next to the Pougers, the Greves is silky, feminine and gracious.
