    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

    Vinous (95)

(two barrels produced, vs. a normal eight): Bright, pale yellow. Vibrant aromas of lemon gelato and wild herbs. Very complex, pure and refined, boasting an utterly silky, seamless texture to its intense citrus peel, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Really outstanding inner-mouth energy here, followed by a slowly mounting finish that saturates the taste buds. A great wine in the making, but not for drinking anytime soon. (I found the 2017 version a bit juicier and fruitier, and there will be ten barrels of the younger vintage as the crop level was generous.) According to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, 2017 has more sweetness as a vintage, but while the '17 Chevalier-Montrachet is round, opulent and tasty, the '16 is extremely pure, fresh and linear, and will expand with time in the cellar. But even today it's silky, tactile, edge-free and extremely long.

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is beautifully defined on the nose, featuring wonderful crushed limestone and gunflint scents that permeate the green apple aromas. Very focused and intense. The palate is extremely well balanced with a powerful opening, very saline and so full of energy. Enormous weight and presence toward the finish. This is an outstanding Chevalier-Montrachet from Jadot.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Poissenot 1er Cru, from relatively young vines planted 12–15 years ago, has a lovely bouquet of ample red currant and cranberry scents on the nose, and a light brushing of loamy soil and woodland. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. There is something gentle about this Premier Cru, which is quite caressing in texture yet still displays good structure and delineation on the finish. Excellent.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a composed bouquet with dark cherry, red plum, a light estuarine influence seeping through with aeration, all with good intensity and focus. This wine smells like where it comes from: high on the hills of Gevrey, tucked in near to the forest. Forest floor and fresh mushrooms mingle with bramble and blackberries. Nicely ripe and less crunchy than it often is, the full body is surrounded by spicy tannins and generous acidity. 2024-35

Bright, dark red. Highly complex, expressive scents and flavors of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, animal fur and brown spices. Rich, pliant and slightly wild in the mouth, conveying compelling Gevrey perfume. Very suave for Cazetiers and most impressive on the back end, which features serious but smooth tannins and rising, palate-staining length. Cazetiers is our most consistent Gevrey premier cru after Clos Saint-Jacques, notes winemaker Frédéric Barnier.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands.

Bright medium red. Reticent aromas of cherry, redcurrant, pepper and licorice. A supple if somewhat brooding village wine with strong herb and licorice notes to go with its cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. A step up from the Marsannay in mid-palate stuffing, with the wine's dusty tannins more successfully buffered on the back end. A bit more finishing sweetness here as well, along with good grip.

Cask sample. Deep garnet. Intense ferny undergrowth on the nose and pretty exciting vivacity on the palate. More concentrated than most. Closer perhaps to the traditional view of red burgundy. There is so much fruit that you could, with murder in mind, drink this even sooner. GV (relatively).

    Vinous (91-94)

Bright, dark red. Highly complex, expressive scents and flavors of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, animal fur and brown spices. Rich, pliant and slightly wild in the mouth, conveying compelling Gevrey perfume. Very suave for Cazetiers and most impressive on the back end, which features serious but smooth tannins and rising, palate-staining length. Cazetiers is our most consistent Gevrey premier cru after Clos Saint-Jacques, notes winemaker Frédéric Barnier.

Danish pastries and roasted plums on the nose, very sweet and spicy. Fleshy and opulent on the palate, with great intensity of fruit. The tannins build and offer depth, structure and savour. Long and expansive on the finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has an exquisite bouquet of crystalline red berry fruit laced with minerals, wonderfully delineated and focused. The palate is smooth and sensual on the entry, and very cohesive, with a perfect line of acidity. Pure and ravishing, armed with a satin-textured finish, this is going to be very difficult to resist once in bottle. Superb.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is very composed on the nose with blackberry, briary, Earl Grey and light marine nuances on the finish. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands.

    Vinous (88)

Bright medium red. Reticent aromas of cherry, redcurrant, pepper and licorice. A supple if somewhat brooding village wine with strong herb and licorice notes to go with its cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. A step up from the Marsannay in mid-palate stuffing, with the wine's dusty tannins more successfully buffered on the back end. A bit more finishing sweetness here as well, along with good grip.

Vineyards on the same slope as the Grand Crus are the source for this rich wine. Its tannins are properly firm, with a dry core surrounded by fragrant, juicy red fruits. It is a rich wine that keeps its elegance and aging potential. Drink from 2024.
