    Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

    About Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor producer in Dijon, founded the domaine which still bears his surname in 1863, starting with some of the best plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Badly hit by the economic crisis in the 1930s, Mugnier sold the liquor business and leased out the vineyards. As the domaine recovered, the estate regained full control of their vineyards after the leasing contracts ended. Coming full circle, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is currently managed by Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation who takes the same name as the founding father of the estate.

The latest plot to return to the estate (in 2004) was Clos de la Maréchale. Spanning some 9 hectares, the Clos de la Maréchale is one of the largest monopoles in Côte d'Or, with an average vine age over 50 years old. With Frédéric Mugnier asserting full control since 2004, his first vintage to be scored was the 2005, which quickly won warm praise from William Kelley.

    Vinous (93)

(from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring.

Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume (a rapid succession of sensations is the way Mugnier puts it).

Bright, dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and flinty stone. Wonderfully suave on entry, then vibrant and sappy in the middle, with pungent raspberry and crushed stone flavors boasting outstanding density and freshness. Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, flowers and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, with its fruit sweetness perfectly countered by minerality. The wine's powerful stony underpinning gives it outstanding sappiness and inner-mouth tension. Offers a remarkable combination of thick, silky texture and energy. Finishes with thoroughly buffered, noble tannins and outstanding length. This should evolve slowly and gracefully for at least the next two decades.

Musky nose is dominated by pungent smoky minerality and crushed stone. Then fatter and chewier than the village wine, with more smoky oak and brown spices showing. Finishes with a note of tobacco. Seems less pristine and distinctive than the village wine, but there's more wine here. A sample from a second barrel was still quite bound-up, showing musky strawberry and mocha notes and a bit more clarity.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees impresses for its superb textural richness. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are woven together in a fabric of notable beauty. There is plenty of tannic material, but the fruit is so dense the wine’s structural elements are a bit in the background. The wine continued to close down in the glass, which is likely to be quite positive for its aging potential. Despite the massive temptation to drink this early, my impression is that patience will be rewarded. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

Bright medium red. More expressive on the nose today than the Amoureuses, offering ineffable scents of black raspberry, lavender and flinty, smoky minerality. By far the plushest and deepest of these 2014s but still with outstanding definition and verve. This wonderfully fine-grained, classically dry Musigny boasts bulletproof fruit and finishes with impressive medicinal reserve. Beginning with the 2013 Musigny, Mugnier will be delaying the release of his top bottling for a minimum of two years--and possibly several years more than that--as he finds this wine especially hard to read in its extreme youth.

The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Maréchale marks a pretty significant stylistic shift in this tasting, but, then again, the Clos de la Maréchale suffered through a brutal hailstorm in July that lowered the crop dramatically. A core of dark red/black stone fruits, spices, mocha and leather opens up nicely, but the effect of the hail is felt in the wine's slightly angular profile. The 2012 is going to need time to come together, but my impression is that the tannins will always remain a bit rough around the edges.

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.

Aromas of cassis, dark plums, baking chocolate and rosehip introduce the 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a full-bodied, rich and layered wine with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, stony tannins that are entirely enveloped in fleshy, gourmand fruit. This vintage is atypically rich and concentrated, so it's hard to predict if and when it will shut down.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru, which is usually the first to be picked, has a really delightful bouquet, very expressive and displaying fine mineralité. The precise, detailed palate is well balanced, offering mineral tension, a fine line of acidity and a crisp, vibrant finish. Superb.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru was tasted from a blend of five cuvées. It has an attractive bouquet of mainly black fruit laced with black tea and bay leaf notes, plus touches of rose petal in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, tending more toward a red fruit profile, with wonderful salinity on the finish. Good potential. Excellent.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has quite an open and expressive bouquet with blackberry, crushed rock and undergrowth, almost peaty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite gritty in texture and tight with a saline finish. This will require 3-4 years. It is a bit abrasive at the moment and needs to be tempered by time.

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a pretty, floral nose with pressed rose petal filtering through the red fruit. Transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, light for a Premier Cru yet quite vivacious with finely chiselled tannins towards the tart finish. Will be difficult to resist young.
