Weingut Dönnhoff
About Weingut Dönnhoff
Weingut Dönnhoff is the best estates in Germany going toe-to-toe with the top names of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Owner Helmut Dönnhoff is a living legend. Started in 1971 with 4 hectares he now has 20. He attributes his success to "making wine for himself" rather than purely commercial reasons. His passion and expertise produce wine that boasts mouthwatering sensations and delicious minerality. It's no surprise his are among the most in-demand wines in the world.
Once described by Neal Martin (Vinous) as Germany’s equivalent of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of its imperious standing amongst Riesling producers, today’s offer is utterly unmissable for all serious devotees of both German wine and the world’s most aristocratic white varietal.

Vinous (95)Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. There is an animating, juicy fresh-fruit aspect as well, and a wonderful sense of both focus and transparency to stony and ore-like nuances. |

Wine Advocate (96)The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife's edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019. |
