    Leflaive

    About Domaine Leflaive

The single most famous and enormously respected estate in Puligny-Montrachet, there have been members of the Leflaive clan dabbling in vinous affairs in the area since 1717 – the true founder of the current domaine as we know it, however, was Joseph Leflaive (1970-1953). The great man’s sons did an admirable job of expanding their vineyard holdings, as well as building the foundations of the fearsome reputation this Burgundian legend enjoys to this day.

It was under the visionary and transformative stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking the reins in 1990, that this mythical domaine became a leader of Burgundy’s now-ubiquitous biodynamic movement, with the entire estate converting to fully biodynamic as early as 1997! The tragic and untimely death of Anne-Claude in 2015 saw general management pass to Eric Remy, who is doing an admirable job of honouring the legacy of the great woman.

    Viniculture

Domaine Leflaive is one of the largest holders of Grands and 1er Crus in the appellation, with 22 hectares in total of which no fewer than 5 are Grands Crus. One would be hard pressed to find any domaine with finer plots at their disposal, and it is most fortunate that the Leflaive family are true masters at expressing every ounce of sublime minerality, personality and vitality from these exceptional terroirs.

Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Anne-Claude Leflaive is slightly deeper in color than its peers. The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish. This is a classy Grand Cru – regal but not imposing.

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a little more clarity, a touch more crystalline on the nose compared to the Bienvenue, scents of Granny Smith apples, petrichor and gunflint. It is controlled and penetrating. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity that cuts through the concentrated malic fruit, a dash of pepper towards the finish that fans out gloriously, sour lemon and grapefruit lingering on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Closure: Diam 30

5-Star Wine Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet also takes time to emerge, then shows a little more power than the Bienvenues. The oak is a fraction more present but still superbly integrated. The taffeta texture could not possibly have more tensile strength, with an exemplary purity of fruit. To have so much power (not in an alcoholic sense) and yet so much grape. Little light fresh apple notes to finish. Tasted: May 2022

Things go up a notch or two with the 2010 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, which appears to hover on the palate with the grace of a ballerina. The Bienvenues is all about weightless elegance and implied structure, but it is all there in the glass. At times a bit intellectual, the Bienvenues is nevertheless immensely appealing. Layers of soft, perfumed fruit flow effortlessly to the nuanced, feminine finish. A hint of floral honey and almonds lingers on the palate. I can’t wait to see how this ages. Anticipated maturity: 2020+.

The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stoic, delineated bouquet with scents of wet limestone and sea spray, just a slight menthol note developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A very pretty, elegant Bienvenue that reveals hints of blood orange and sour lemon on the precise, persistent finish. This is a gorgeous Bienvenue.

The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is cut from a similar cloth to the Les Pucelles on the nose: reserved, mineral-driven with hints of orange blossom emerging with time, later more Granny Smith apples. The palate is strict and precise, demonstrating impressive weight, especially towards the back end. Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30

5-Star Wine An elegant lemon and lime colour. The nose is very precise, a masterpiece of elegance, not giving too much up front. The oak is entirely integrated. A little bit of fresh fennel, otherwise pure white fruit. Then the concentration builds to the back, a slight youthful bitterness, all in all a discreet wine with enormous power to build subsequently. Tasted: May 2022

Bright yellow-gold color. Flamboyant aromas of apricot, white truffle, nut oils, toast and curry powder, plus and a whiff of game; a bit funky in a good way and neither oxidized nor reduced. Plush and velvety in the mouth, in fact almost oily, in a slightly gamey style with very ripe apricot fruit. Could use bit more lift on the end. With its blend of sweet and dry elements, this wine offers charm. Its thick, mouthfilling texture may be appreciated more by mouth tasters but it maintains just enough mineral support. Brice de la Morandière described the 3.4 pH as like a red wine. (14% alcohol; 3.4 pH, September 23 harvest; from a year plagued by April frost, widespread outbreaks of oidium, and a scorching August heat wave)

Domaine Leflaive farms three adjacent parcels in Chevalier, totaling 4.92 acres of vines; the plantings range from the mid-1950s to 1980. It?s a significant holding at the top of the Montrachet hill, as much for its size as for the wines Leflaive?s team consistently produces from the site. This vintage is more concentrated, or perhaps more saturated with ripe flavors than usual, the heat of August powering the vines to an early harvest. Still, from the moment it?s first poured, that extract has a sunny purity, an umami fragrance of the earth and a lemon blossom honey scent that feigns sweetness later revealed as savory richness in a finish that raises this wine into another realm. Chevalier?s aristocratic soil comes into vivid focus over the course of several days through a scrim of silk. Prepare for your knees to melt and your heart to race as the wine reboots the balance of your senses. Or just enjoy it for what it is: A gracious grand cru, perfectly formed, with the detail of a pointillist painting that will come into focus over the next ten to fifteen years.

Situated above Le Montrachet and often rivalling it in bottle, this is a superb release from Domaine Leflaive that is one of the white wines of the vintage. Rich, yet floral, it's a remarkably dense, multi-layered wine that's more focused than the Bâtard. Ethereal and graceful, it offers flavours of orange peel, white peach and vanilla oak, underpinned by a chalky, tangy bite.

(as with the Bâtard, the yield was not much more than ten hectoliters per hectare): Very pure aromas of lemon, lime, white flowers and liquid stone. Quite rich and concentrated but tight and youthfully clenched. There was very little fruit in 2016 from the upper, more minerally part of the vineyard, noted Brice de la Morandière, which may have resulted in a heavier wine than normal. But this wine boasts a strong spine, even if it's still an infant today.

The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet, fresh, taut and understated compared to its peers, perhaps the most elegant of an octet of Chevaliers tasted blind. The well-balanced palate delivers real power, offering flavors of candied orange peel and spices and a fine saline undercurrent. Harmonious, elegant yet intense, this should age with style and panache. It vies with Olivier Leflaive's own Chevalier for supremacy, and juxtaposing them blind, it has its nose in front. More lemon than lime in colour with its high-toned refreshing bouquet. There is some lime blossom, very complex, not the weight of the astonishing Bâtard-Montrachet, but this is a beautifully dressed mannequin in the finest silk, with a little bit of orange blossom in its hair. Incredible persistence. Gorgeous aromatics, so different from the Bâtard yet equally outstanding.

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru needed a little encouragement from the glass. Eventually it reveals captivating scents of honeysuckle, petrichor and pressed yellow flowers, an underlying spiciness that comes through with aeration. The palate has a beguiling symmetry from the start: a killer line of acidity counterbalancing the intensity of this Chevalier, gentle grip towards the spicy and "flowing" finish. Pale yellow. Expressive nose offers ripe peach and an exotic soft citrus quality. Silky, dry and rich, with a distinctly honeyed ripeness. The juicy finish is buttressed by dusty minerality but this broad wine could nonetheless use a bit more mid-palate cut. These vines were planted in 1995 and 2004.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-89)

Green-tinged color; had just finished its malolactic fermentation. Aromas of dried fruits and honeysuckle; distinct confit note. Sweet, spicy and honeyed, but seems a bit heavy for this wine. Good fat finishing fruit.

Peach and smoky oak on the reticent nose. Sweet, full and pure, with subtle floral and spice flavors. Offers a good chewy texture and solid underlying structure, but comes across as considerably less minerally than the young 2002.

Medium yellow. Less vintage-typical aromas of orange, nutmeg and flint. Then more vibrant in the mouth, with a fine-grained texture and enticing floral lift. A bit warm on the end, but finishes with very good thrust and length. This has finesse for a 2003.

Super-charming on the nose and wonderfully clean and energetic. Some warmth and ripeness without any heaviness. Racy and with lime fruit and masses of juice. Quite a different texture to Clavoillon – much juicier and smoother tannins. More fun! Round and the least acid of the lot. Supple. Long.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a little more amplitude compared to the Clavaillon, scents of Granny Smith apples and dewy meadow on a cold morning. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little more weight and girth than the Clavaillon, not to mention a touch more salinity and race on the persistent finish. Excellent. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-96)

5-Star wine A pretty lemon yellow colour. There are extra layers to the bouquet here, ripe fruit and summer flowers while retaining precision, yet with an extra dimension. Pierre thinks this cuvée has stood out from the start of fermentation. There is a velvet gloss to the texture without disturbing the crystalline backbone. Very fine indeed, the best Leflaive Folatières I can remember. Tasted: May 2022

Precise, expressive aromas of lemon, peach, mint and wet stone, with a cool, steely aspect. Dry, intensely flavored, focused and penetrating. Classy and quite long. The best of these premier crus today by a wide margin.

Expressive, musky aromas of peach, lime, quinine, white flowers and spices. Fat, chewy and very rich, with more depth of flavor than the foregoing 2003 samples. The captivating floral quality carries through in the mouth. A distinctly palate-coating wine with excellent stuffing and length.

(still in tank): Bright pale yellow. Pure, subtle aromas of peach, lemon, floral oils and spices. Silky, suave and gentle but with excellent density for village wine. Quite laid-back today, with good mineral tension from start to finish. Finishes long and youthfully tight, and noticeably less sweetness than the very promising Bourgogne Blanc (also in tank) that preceded it in my tasting.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Village, matured in 15% new oak, has an intense bouquet with cold flint and sea cave aromas that you would guess come from a much cooler growing season. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a touch of bitter lemon and a dab of spice towards the cohesive and quite persistent finish. Very long. Closure: Diam 30
