    De Montille

Domaine de Montille in the Cote de Beaune was developed by Hubert de Montille in 1951. His family have aristocratic roots in the region’s land since the 17th century. Now run by his son, Etienne, they use traditional wine making techniques to produce pure elegant Burgundy that generally requires five years bottle ageing.

The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with ample ripe Morello cherry, strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little more compact than the Les Perrières and with more girth towards the grippy finish. As such, give this more bottle age because it is a fine Beaune Grèves.

One third whole bunch and 15% new wood. No great depth of colour, but an attractive medium depth of cherry and raspberry fruit. The soil retains the water here, which is nowadays a good thing. Shows a bit of oak at the back in this early stage, but the fruit retains its fresh and bright qualities. Tasted: October 2020

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains one-third whole bunches and offers a floral bouquet with wilted rose petal, thyme and brambly red fruit, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and moderate depth that it doesn't quite kick on towards the finish. Not bad, but a little "contained".

The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has quite a lot of oak on the nose, although it seems in sync with the redcurrant and cranberry fruit underneath. It is fragrant and become increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red fruit and impressive mineralité. This is one of the most terroir-driven Cortons of the vintage, presumably its limestone soils are expressed on the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

(from the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there's a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins.

The de Montille 2005 Volnay Mitans displays a lovely nose of ripe cherry and flowers with an iodine mineral-medicinal note that, together with fruit skin tartness, follows on a highly-concentrated, impressively-layered, finely-tannic palate, with raw meat, floral and mineral suggestions dominating over any sweetness of fruit. (two-thirds whole clusters; one-third new oak; the sand on top of the limestone here typically yields relatively soft tannins, according to winemaker Brian Sieve): Good dark red. Cool black cherry aroma lifted by a stony quality. A step above the preceding samples in both juiciness and finesse; in fact, a real high-wire act of captivating sweetness and bright acidity. Very fine-grained, serious wine with excellent grip and length. (100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. This slightly edgy wine will need patience.

(vinified entirely with whole clusters and aged in 35% new oak; the average vine age here is 65 years and the soil features gravel on limestone): Bright medium-deep red. Deeply pitched, fruit-driven aromas of black raspberry and dark cherry, plus a hint of smoky minerality. Wonderfully plush yet lively, displaying more volume and depth than the Mitans. Lovely silky Volnay without any impression of undue weight. Really fills the mouth and echoes on the finish while maintaining superb vivacity. Here the acidity is ripe and the broad tannins distinctly suave and fine-grained. This is showing beautifully considering that it only finished its malolactic fermentation in September.

The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. That might resolve itself with time in bottle… we will see. Still an intriguing proposition. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    Vinous (90+)

(100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. This slightly edgy wine will need patience.

    Vinous (91-94)

    Vinous (91)

The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. That might resolve itself with time in bottle… we will see. Still an intriguing proposition. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, sous-bois, thyme and touches of dried rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, crisp with tea leaf and bay leaf, building gently towards a composed, quasi-Morey-Saint-Denis finish. The pedigree of the terroir really defines this wine, even in a tough vintage like this.

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster but a little more new oak than the regular cuvée (as a reminder, it comes from the parcel that lies adjacent to La Tâche). It has a little more definition and darker fruit on the nose, developing more floral scents with aeration. This is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, focused and harmonious, with gentle grip toward the chalky-textured finish. It will require several years in bottle.
