La Pousse d'Or
Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has an imposing property near Volnay, in the Cote de Beaune. They also have vines in Pommard and Santenay. Since its foundation in 1964 it has been a pioneering estate. In 1997 it was acquired by Patrick Landanger who invested heavily in this spirit, getting the best of his terroir.

Burghound (92-94)There is enough reduction present to render the nose difficult to assess today. Otherwise there is a slightly finer mouth feel to the sleek, intense and sappy flavors that possess a highly polished and seductive mouth feel while brimming with minerality on the firm and youthfully austere finale. Like the Bousse d'Or this is going to require at least some patience and ultimately reward 12 to 15 years of cellar time. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Volnay Clos des 60 Ouvrées 1er Cru has a very nuanced and precise bouquet, understated at first, but revealing quite compelling mineral-rich black fruit with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, finely balanced, not quite as sophisticated as the Clos d’Audignac since this is more bullish and demonstrative on the grippy finish. Give it a few years in bottle. |

Wine Advocate (92)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is quite a lot of reduction on the nose of the Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or, but underneath is some quite decent redcurrant and fresh strawberry fruit that gradually unfurls in the glass. There is still some oak here to be resolved, but there is sufficient substance here to suggest that patience is all that is needed. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy on the opening. This is soft and caressing in the mouth with quite a sensual and well-balanced finish that neatly carries the oak. This is well crafted but will improve with another 18-24 months in bottle. |

Burghound (91-94)Moderate amounts of wood and menthol elements frame the prominently ripe aromas of black pinot fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in an abundance of pretty spice nuances. The opulently, even lavishly rich medium weight flavors saturate the palate with sappy dry extract which also serves to buffer the more evidently mineral-inflected finish that is both firm and youthfully austere. Patience definitely required here. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2014 Chambolle Musigny les Charmes 1er Cru has one of the most exotic bouquets from La Pousse d'Or: macerated red cherries, orange peel and dried fig, nicely defined and just a little heady! The palate is succulent on the entry with supple, fine tannin. Here, there is a mixture of red and black fruit, whereas other cuvées lean towards the latter. It feels more harmonious in the mouth, perhaps more approachable with a persuasive, silky texture on the finish. This is very well crafted. |

Vinous (87-90)Bright ruby-red. Wild, musky aromas of dark berries and spices come across as a bit dull. Juicy and moderately deep but rather closed today, showing more saline minerality than primary fruit. This very backward wine finishes with slightly tough tannins and a lingering salty character. |

Vinous (90-92)Dark red-ruby. Riper and more expressive on the nose than the Feusselottes but still with a medicinal aspect to its aromas of black cherry and licorice. Denser and finer-grained on the palate, showing a note of redcurrant and an element of mineral lift. The medicinal quality repeats on the back end, but the tannins are rich and smooth. This wine is fatter than the Feusselottes; it's usually the other way around at this early stage. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Groseilles 1er Cru shakes off a touch of reduction to reveal and attractive, floral bouquet with scents of mandarin that infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded opening, quite fleshy underneath that carapace of tannin, grippy with a slightly tarry finish. Broody at the moment, it deserves four or five years in bottle, by then it should drink well. |

Vinous (92)The 2016 Pommard Les Jarollières 1er Cru has a clean and pure bouquet with black cherries, raspberry coulis and light cassis scents. The oak here is evident but nicely proportioned against the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple blackberry and raspberry notes, just a tad on the oaky side although that will ultimately be subsumed and there is commendable harmony and length on the finish. This is very promising and ranks highly against its peers. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. |

Wine Advocate (87-89)The solitary white from Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, the 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru le Cailleret from 0.72-hectare of vine, has a light and slightly smudged bouquet that needs a touch more nervosité. The palate is smooth on the entry, quite creamy in texture with hints of pineapple and pralines, gently rolling out to a rounded, harmonious finish. Probably earlier drinking than it deserves. |

Wine Advocate (90-92)The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, which is made from whole bunch fruit, has a clean and fresh, very pure bouquet that neatly disguises the stem addition. The palate is grippy, very tannic, masculine with a grainy texture, hints of bell pepper towards the huge finish that needs more flesh to balance those stems. Still, it is balanced and I am intrigued to see how this will age - this has complexity and a sense of intrigue. |

Vinous (89-91)Dark ruby-red. Very primary, ripe aromas of black raspberry, blueberry and chocolate show a touch of animal fur reduction. Sweet and chocolatey in the mouth but a bit chunky today. The wine's substantial tannins are still somewhat unrefined. Although the Pousse d'Or wines were in tank in November, they remained on their fine lees. |

Vinous (91-93)(vinified with 30% whole clusters and aged in 30% new oak; Landanger admitted to a little too much pigeage with this wine): Bright dark ruby, deeper in color than the amphora version. Totally different on the nose, where one is immediately aware of a bitter chocolate note from the oak. Then sweeter and more pliant in the mouth, with flavors of black cherry, violet and licorice. More complex and long on the aftertaste, offering an intriguing suggestion of wildness. The tannins here are serious, even a bit youthfully aggressive, and yet this sample makes the amphora version seem a bit frozen in its youth. |
