    Margaux

    About Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of five 1éme Grand Cru Classé (First Growth) wines from the original 1855 Classification of Bordeaux (along with Latour, Lafite, Mouton Rothschild and Haut-Brion).

This estate has an unbelievable history, dating back almost 1,000 years to the 12th Century when it was called “La Mothe de Margaux”. The vineyards were established in the 1600s. In 1705 the London Gazette conducted the first sale of leading Bordeaux wines which included 230 barrels of ‘Margoose’. Thomas Jefferson, US Ambassador to France wrote of the 1784 Margaux “there cannot be a better bottle of Bordeaux wine”.

Château Margaux was sold in 1977 to Andre Mentzelopoulos, whose daughter Corinne Mentzelopoulos took over in 1980. Paul Pontallier was the long-time director of Château Margaux who did so much to establish the fantastic reputation the estate has today. His tragic death in March 2016 is commemorated on the label of the 2015 vintage (a true collector’s item). Fittingly, the Château building at Margaux is one of the grandest and most imposing in all of Bordeaux, nicknamed the Versailles of the Medoc. It is perhaps Bordeaux’s most recognisable symbol.

The aromas in this young Margaux are so primary, reminding me of grape must fermenting in the vat, then turning to perfumes and flowers. Violets and roses. Full-bodied but it comes across as so agile and bright, with vivid acidity that makes the wine crunchy and linear. As Alexis, one of the owners of Margaux said, this really shows the DNA of the estate. Weightless. One of the wines of the vintage. 3.6 pH. Blend of 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

The 2006 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux has always been one of the pinnacle white releases from this First Growth and at ten years of age, I have no reason to change my mind. It has an exquisite bouquet of lemon curd, orange scents and a touch of praline that is very delineated and focused. The palate exhibits fine balance with hints of crème fraiche, almond and even a cheeky dab of marzipan. Funnily enough, it is difficult imagining that this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and in fact, there is something almost Burgundy-like about this Pavillon Blanc (as I suggested in my barrel tasting note). Irrespective of origin, what it constitutes is a damn glorious white Bordeaux that comes highly recommended. So much so, I would drink this now rather than later. Tasted January 2016.

Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and slate are some of the many notes that are woven throughout the 2014 Pavillon Blanc. The interplay of bright, citrus-driven flavors and palate texture is compelling. This is the first vintage in which a portion of the Blanc was aged in 500-liter barrels, a format that helps preserve freshness and tension. In early 2015, I thought the Pavillon Blanc could be the most compelling of Margaux's 2014s. I still feel the same way.

High Sauvignon Blanc aromatics, with gunsmoke and flint reduction on the first nose, opening to juicy white peach, white pear, nuanced pumice stone minerality. Pavillon Blanc is one of the most structured white wines of Bordeaux, and reveals its complexities slowly, but already the texture tells you just what an exceptional vintage it is. Subtle yet unmissable.

This is a really serious white. Vibrant and tangy with fantastic energy. Plenty of lime zest, pineapple, crushed stone, cedar, anise and white lavender. Grapefruit, too. Medium body. So much tension at the end. Focused and precise and it just keeps on going. The pH is 3.04, yet it has intense ripeness. A masterpiece of sauvignon blanc. The chateau says it is the best Pavillon Blanc ever. 100% sauvignon blanc.

Very dark crimson – looks much bluer than the 1996. Still bluer than the 2004. Savoury, complex, really rather gorgeous nose even if far from the first flush of youth. Sumptuous nose even if on the palate it’s more austere than the nose suggests. Quite grainy tannins on the finish but lovely balance. Very fresh.

Not nearly as concentrated, although elegant, in a much lighter style than the 2003, with notes of cedar, herbs, red and black currants as well as licorice, this is a medium-bodied, more streamlined and austere Pavillon Rouge to drink over the next decade.

The 2005 Pavillon Rouge is in a beautiful spot right now where it is just beginning to show signs of aromatic complexity and nuance. At fifteen years of age, the DNA of the vintage remains - Pavillon Rouge is a potent, hulking wine. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and anise add layers of nuance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2005 should be delighted. I imagine the 2005 will drink beautifully for another decade or more. Today it is positively stellar. The more it opens in the glass, the more classic it becomes.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux has a crisp and well defined bouquet of black dusky fruit, sandalwood, bay leaf and a touch of warm gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and impressive structure. There is a linearity about this Pavillon Rouge, with a dash of white pepper towards the finish, as it clings to the mouth and says, I'm going to last longer than you think in bottle. This initially suggested a drinking window of around a decade, but now a decade on, it has other ideas. Tasted February 2017.

Deep purple. Sexy nose of redcurrant, fresh herbs and vanilla. Lively on entry, then soft and ripe, with multilayered red fruit, herb and cocoa flavors. The pure, long finish is ripely tannic. Paul Pontallier told me that the estate is paying more attention to Pavillon Rouge, as it has become such an important and sought-after wine that Margaux cannot really afford to have it be anything less than excellent.

Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries and mint meld together in the 2013 Pavillon Rouge. Understated, classy and impeccable, the 2013 stands out for its graceful personality. This is a very pretty, if somewhat light-bodied Pavillon Rouge. At just 21% of the chateau's total production, the 2013 is also the smallest vintage ever of Pavillon Rouge. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87)

Moderately saturated medium color. Floral, minty, new-oaky nose, with an exotic coconut note; showed some alcohol as it opened in the glass. Silky, supple, and moderately concentrated finishes with palate-caressing tannins and spicy oak. Nicely balanced for early drinking.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2005 Pavillon Rouge is in a beautiful spot right now where it is just beginning to show signs of aromatic complexity and nuance. At fifteen years of age, the DNA of the vintage remains - Pavillon Rouge is a potent, hulking wine. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and anise add layers of nuance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2005 should be delighted. I imagine the 2005 will drink beautifully for another decade or more. Today it is positively stellar. The more it opens in the glass, the more classic it becomes.

Delicate and elegant wine, with smoky fruit, ripe but freshened with a tight layer of acidity. It has delicious black currant juice flavors, but the texture remains light and the tannins soft.

Aromatic wine, with richness as well as soft tannins. It's quite a mouthful of explosive red berry fruits, with delicious acidity. The finish is is eas and rounded.

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (88-91)

There is very pretty purity of fruit to this with lots of currant, strawberry and plum character. Lots of chocolate and hazelnut too. Full body, velvety tannins and a chewy finish. Excellent for the vintage. About half the normal production. This is the same level of quality as 2016.
