    Arnoux-Lachaux

    Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux

Established in 1858, Arnoux-Lachaux is a family affair. Pascal Lachaux (son-in-law of the late Robert Arnoux) is the fifth generation making wine at this Domaine, which has significant grand Cru holdings. he is now working in the winery with his son Charles who has joined him after working in wine regions in New Zealand, South Africa and Oregon.

The Domaine’s wine has always been good but its quality and reputation are sharply rising. A new winery, cellar upgrade and acquisition of a parcel of the Grand Cru Latricieres Chambertin have all contributed.

    Jancis Robinson (16.5)

A blend of seven plots in Chambolle, Vosne and Nuits-St-Georges – about half of the fruit is from Chambolle. 100% whole bunch. 34 hl/ha (lower than in 2017). 10,000 bottles produced (8,500 in 2019). Lightish cherry red. Scented nose with lively fruit but savoury rather than sweet. Succulent, supple and with generous and fresh fruit. Gentle and persistent. Mouth-watering. Really polished but natural (in the general sense of the word, ie authentic) at the same time. Seems effortless. You could drink this now though it does have a fine backbone and a refreshing dry texture on the finish.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from north-facing vineyards toward the upper slopes the last vines to ripen, as they can lie in the shade. Containing 80% whole bunch fruit, it has a well-defined, slightly tertiary bouquet with touches of black pepper and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate presents fresh red fruit, lightly spiced with white pepper, sage and a touch of tobacco, perhaps a little Morey-like in structure, but with a very long finish. Excellent.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a very harmonious, slightly earthy bouquet, the 100% whole bunch lending a very discreet tertiary/sous-bois quality. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit (cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate). This has quite strict tannins and a Morey-inspired, sapid finish. Good potential.

This is reduction free with an exuberant and highly complex nose of spice, earth and well-layered red pinot fruit aromas that display a background hint of plum. There is fine richness to the pure and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate with an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract on the gorgeously complex finish. This is finer than the Clos de Vougeot and just as complex if somewhat less firmly structured though this will also require plenty of cellar time.

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru is very pretty, opening in the glass with notes of sweet cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, rose and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. Like most of Charles Lachaux's 2015s, this is shutting down, but it should be exceptional in the fullness of time. This is produced from a parcel in Rouges du Bas: one of the steeper, higher-altitude parts of Echézeaux, where the soil is thinner and the wines tend to be more tensile.

Good deep red-ruby. Cool aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry and crushed rock lifted by pepper and herbs. Pure, juicy and precise if a bit youthfully imploded, but already showing terrific sappy intensity. Finishes very long and perfumed, with a serious tannic spine. Promises to be Lachaux's best vintage yet for this cuvee, which he initiated with the 2008 after purchasing these old vines from Christopher Newman.

The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvées Pagets, one of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux's emblematic wines, wafts from the glass with a complex bouquet of plums, candied peel, violets and raspberries. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and complete, with a deep core of fruit, crystalline purity, and fine-grained but chalky tannins. Structurally, this is classic Premeaux.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet of brambly red fruit, briar, wild heather and light crushed rock aromas; more tertiary scents (damp moss?) emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannin and just a slight lactic tincture on the entry, layers of tart red fruit infused with minerals and even a cheeky hint of Turkish Delight on the finish. This feels very long and tender.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Villages has an open-knit, crushed strawberry and woodland scented nose, almost malic in style perhaps due to the 70% stem addition. The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is a blend of several vineyards that offer homogeneous ripeness but on different soils. It has quite an earthy, sous-bois tinged bouquet that is very well defined, the 60% whole bunches nicely integrated. 1.42 ha from seven lieux-dits in the north of the appellation. 100% whole bunch. Lightish cherry red but greyish rather than crimson. A little more savoury than the Bourgogne and a very slight stemmy herbal note but it's subtle. A little bit peppery. More tension here than in the Bourgogne, a little lighter in obvious fruit and a little more tannic but barely so. Super-fresh. Dry and lingering. So elegant.

Red-ruby. Spicy black fruits, cocoa powder, violet and spices on the primary nose. A step up in volume, sweetness and depth from the Suchots, with very primary grapey, minerally flavors and hints of exotic fruits. There is an all-but-invisible touch of brett present on the otherwise pretty and beautifully layered nose that features notes of various dark berries, violets and a wide range of spice elements. The gorgeously refined middle weight flavors possess a suave and silky mouth feel before culminating in a strikingly complex finish that seems to dance across the palate while delivering flat out huge length. This is still moderately firm yet with air it could easily be enjoyed now. Note that my score offers the benefit of the doubt regarding the brett as I have no other recent notes and thus I can't say whether this bottle was entirely representative.

Bright, full red. Less expressive and more brooding than the Suchots, offering deeper aromas of minerals, smoked meat, menthol and cocoa. Dense, sappy and almost painfully intense, with a wonderfully generous texture and spherical shape. Best today on the explosive, mounting, lightly saline finish. Bigger than the Suchots but less vibrant and harmonious now. This should be approachable within five years but should continue to improve into its early teens.

Healthy dark red. Sexy, soil-driven nose melds raspberry, spices, herbs and smoky minerals. Plush, fine-grained and sweet yet somehow light on its feet; like the 2016 version, this has a very high pH around 3.9 but its savory minerality and stem element give it sufficient energy and lift. A wonderfully seamless ripe-but-dry wine with a very long, rising finish featuring refined tannins and lingering black cherry and licorice notes.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)

Bright, full red. Less expressive and more brooding than the Suchots, offering deeper aromas of minerals, smoked meat, menthol and cocoa. Dense, sappy and almost painfully intense, with a wonderfully generous texture and spherical shape. Best today on the explosive, mounting, lightly saline finish. Bigger than the Suchots but less vibrant and harmonious now. This should be approachable within five years but should continue to improve into its early teens.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)

Good bright, dark red. Dark berries, violet and a whiff of fresh peppercorn on the nose, complicated by mineral and oak notes. Sweet, creamy fruit is given definition by firm acidity. Suave, fine-grained, essentially round wine, showing the deeper pitch of the warm year. Finishes with subtly powerful, building length and fully ripe tannins.

    Burghound (96)

The strikingly elegant nose offers the most complexity of these 2012s with its well-layered aromas of spice, plum, violet, dark cherry and sandalwood. There is a beguilingly velvety texture to the lightly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess plenty of mouth coating dry extract before terminating in a firm and impeccably well-balanced finish. Note that this classy beauty will also require ample patience.

    Vinous (93+)

Healthy dark red. Sexy, soil-driven nose melds raspberry, spices, herbs and smoky minerals. Plush, fine-grained and sweet yet somehow light on its feet; like the 2016 version, this has a very high pH around 3.9 but its savory minerality and stem element give it sufficient energy and lift. A wonderfully seamless ripe-but-dry wine with a very long, rising finish featuring refined tannins and lingering black cherry and licorice notes.

    Vinous (91+)

Healthy full medium red. Ripe strawberry and raspberry scents are complicated by a note of cocoa powder. Round, plush and horizontal, showing saline and herbal nuances to the red fruit and spice flavors. Not a sweet style but spreads out nicely to saturate the mouth. The tannins are dusty and ripe.

    Burghound (90-92)

A spicy but restrained nose speaks of exotic tea, lilac, black raspberry and a hint of wood. There is a seductive texture to the supple medium-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate density before culminating in a dusty and palate coating finish. This should drink well young but reward up to a decade of cellar time as well.

    Vinous (90-93)

Deep red. Distinctly wild aromas of black raspberry, violet, leather and game. Very rich and fine-grained, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its complex flavors of raspberry, black cherry, licorice and wild herbs. Offers a superb combination of clarity and depth. Finishes juicy and long, with serious ripe tannins and a repeating leathery nuance.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has impressive presence on the nose – pressed flower mixed with cranberry, bay leaf and damp undergrowth. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry, superb symmetry and focus with convincing brightness on the finish. This articulates the Premier Cru beautifully.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru comes from the middle of a vineyard that traverses from top to bottom of the incline; this vintage contains around 50% whole bunches. It has a gorgeous bouquet with red currant, cranberry and light mineral notes, hints of bergamot and vervain tea emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin, fine acidity and quite an insistent grip. The salinity floods through this Vosne-Romanée on the finish. Superb.
