Picaro del Aguila Tinto 2013 (12x75cl)
Gorgeous aromas of crushed blackberries, raspberries and lemon peel. Full body, yet refined and polished tannins. Mostly tempranillo co-fermented with garnacha and bobal. old vines. Superb finish. Great wine.
The 2013 Pícaro Tinto is Tempranillo with 5% Albillo from a mixture of north facing vineyards in the Sotillejo quarter of La Aguilera, the village of Burgos where they have all of their vineyards. They do not own a destemmer machine, so all of their wines ferment in full clusters and always with indigenous yeasts, in this case in cement vats. This 2013 had a shorter aging in barrel than the previous years and they also used a smaller percentage of new oak. This part of the village produces wines of great energy; the nose is fresh with an Atlantic, cool, herbal twist, representing the vintage, a year with a shorter vegetative cycle in the shape of red and black wild berries with some floral hints. This is an accessible, fresh and quite fruit-driven Ribera from a cool place in a cool vintage. The oak is very nicely integrated, with some spices and some grainy, slightly chalky tannins. Ideal for food. 8,000 bottles.

Bright violet color. Vibrant cherry and dark berry scents are sharpened and lifted by smoky mineral and floral accents. Fleshy and broad but surprisingly lithe, offering powerful black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of allspice. Silky, seamless and appealingly sweet on the long, penetrating finish, which features sneaky tannins and a persistent cherry liqueur quality.

Ribera del Duero is fast becoming (if not already!) one of the top Spanish wine regions following Rioja and Priorat, home to icons like Vega Sicilia and Pingus. Dominio del Aguila has become the latest name to join the ranks, hardly surprising when wines from Dominio del Aguila are made by Jorge Monzon who had previously worked for none other than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia. It certainly also helps that their fruit comes from “one of the most impressive collections of old vines in Ribera del Duero” (Luis Gutiérrez) and are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Dominio del Aguila is Pascual's own project in Ribera del Duero after collecting tiny parcels of old vines for 10 years. The freshness and purity of the estate’s wines captured the imaginations of the press, and they were widely proclaimed to be some of the most exciting new wines to be coming out of Spain.
