The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a huge, dark wine. Virile, imposing and massively structured in the glass, the 2013 is a wine for readers who can be patient. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive, with potent tannins and a real feeling of gravitas to back things up. Black cherry, game, smoke, gravel and licorice add to an impression of brooding intensity. In many ways, the 2013 reminds me of some of the great wines of the 1970s in its dark, imposing personality.

This is slightly more opulent than other vintages of Mayacamas with tile, slate, dark fruits and flowers such as roses. Full body, firm and luscious tannins. Lots of sage and lavender undertones. Best ever from here? First wine from new owners. Reserved extravagance. Barrel sample. Released in fall 2017.

Mayacamas is one of the original high-flying cult Californian Cabernets from Napa Valley; among the estates that gave rise to this iconic class of wines. With just 20 hectares under vine, at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,400 feet of elevation, this legendary estate has some of the most enviable vineyards in Napa. Recently taken into new ownership, 2014 is just the second vintage made by Andy Erickson's ambitious new winemaking team. Their attention to detail combined with the natural gifts of the estate, including 40+ year-old vines, has set the stage for genuine brilliance.
