The first vintage managed by Guillaume Sorrel, taking over for his father Marc who recently retired, this is a superb vintage for this classic, under-the-radar blue chip gem. A beauty, with roasty, deep pitched fruit and smoked meat aromatics as well as a touch of elegant violet and earthy spiciness, this has all the complexity and vivacity that you want from Hermitage. Structurally built for a lengthy period in the cellar, we suggest giving this at least a decade before popping the cork, though we wouldn't blame you for opening a bottle or two earlier, as it is remarkably engaging and forward in its youth as well.

Producer

Marc Sorrel

There is much more to Hermitage than La Chapelle and, in our opinion, the most impressive, low-key producer has to be Marc Sorrel. Their flagship Hermitage Le Greal is one of the finest wines in the Northern Rhône, placing it in truly grand company indeed. Described by the Wine Advocate as "an often-overlooked source of fine Hermitage" the price point remains remarkably sensible for those buying on release, with potentially excellent returns for those patient enough to hold their wines for a few years. Marc is a very down-to-earth kind of winemaker. He doesn't do the international tastings circuit, preferring to spend his time focussing on his wines, tending to the vines and checking barrels. The results bear out his clear dedication to quality.
