Rioja Alta, apart from being absolutely delicious, offers some of the best value around, being aged for a full 10 years before release. In a style which is ‘traditional but modern’, the wines are made with local grapes, Tempranillo with a little Graciano and Mazuela. Fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in house-made, low toast barrels give a clean, pure edge to classic Rioja characteristics. Complex, fascinating, and approachable on release, these are can’t-miss wines. The 2004 is just edging in to its drinking window and is tasting superb now.

La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta was started in 1890 by five local vine growers in Haro. They seized the opportunity from the phylloxera in France to offer wine lovers a great alternative. They are one of the finest wineries for traditional Rioja. Their in-house cooperage makes their own barrels from American Oak and they do their racking by hand. Unusually for Rioja they are also a major vineyard owner. They are renowned for magnificent Reserve and Gran Reserva’s.
