Tasted from magnum, the 1996 Barolo is absolutely stunning. Vibrant and wonderfully alive, the 1996 exudes class. Time has gently softened the 1996 tannins, rendering the 1996 super-expressive today. Balsamic, mentholated notes, along with scents of tobacco and dried stone fruit continue to open up with time in the glass. The 1996 is still firm and quite powerful, but not as austere as many wines are in this vintage. Tar, licorice and scorched earth add the closing shades of nuance in an impeccably balanced, vivid Barolo that captures the personality of the vintage at its best.

Burlotto's 1996 Barolo Monvigliero presents a decidedly dark profile of fruit because of the cold growing season. At twenty years of age, the 1996 remains young, powerful and full of life. Time in bottle has helped the elements meld together nicely. Even so, the 1996 remains virile and imposing in style. With a little bit of air, the 1996 can be enjoyed now, but it has plenty of life ahead. Hints of orange peel, tobacco and spice add to the deeply expressive, exotic finish. Readers who own it should be thrilled. In 1996, the Monvigliero is an exotic, beguiling Barolo that emphasizes power over finesse. Part of that is the personality of the year, but the wines have also improved markedly over the last two decades.

Good deep red-ruby. Cassis, redcurrant, truffle, gunflint, green tobacco, dark chocolate and a whiff of varnish on the nose. Elio Altare's 1996 Barolo is fabulous. The density, power and texture are clearly those of a wine from the modern school, and yet the flavor profile is surprisingly classic, with plenty of tar, licorice, tobacco and rose petal nuances. Vivid and deeply expressive the 1996 is in a great place to deliver fine drinking for another 5-10 years. The 50% new oak is barely perceptible. This is a superb showing for a straight Barolo.

The 1996 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is just beginning to show the first elements of aromatic nuance and complexity. There is more than enough depth for the 1996 to drink well for a number of years to come. Sweet tobacco, cedar, savory herbs, menthol, licorice and wild cherries shape the aromatic, intense finish. I would prefer to cellar the 1996 for another few years, as the tannins aren't fully resolved. The Gavarini is a classic 1996 Barolo built on the austere power that is such a signature of the year.

Gaja's 1996 Barbaresco is superb. Smoke, leather, tobacco, menthol and black cherries give the wine its distinctive dark, brooding personality. Bottle age has softened the burly tannins the 1996 had in its youth. With time in the glass, the 1996 starts to brighten a bit, but it remains tannic, austere and intense, which is to say very much in the style of the year. All things considered, the 1996 has aged impeccably. Powerful and also highly expressive, the Barbaresco is a terrific example of the year.

The 1996 Sperss is arguably the most backward of these 1996s from Gaja. Still very young and tightly wound, the 1996 is going to need at least a few years to truly blossom. Even so, it is likely to remain somewhat compact and classically austere in build. The flavors are dark, with plenty of melted road tar, lavender, smoke and gravel undertones that add shades of nuance to this potent and imposing Serralunga wine.

This wine boasts dynamic notes of ripe red fruit, worn leather, and richly aromatic spices, exuding the mellow maturity of its age.

Revello, highly recognized for their attention to terroir expression and environmental responsibility, uses grape clusters handpicked from the prestigious Lazzarito, Rocche dell'Annunziata and Fiasco vineyards. Owned by brothers Enzo and Carlo Revello, the winemaking process is significantly traditional, marked quality controlled by modern innovations.

The Revello Barolo 1996 is a luxurious testament to the charm of Italian wine. Its robust character, combined with a refined undertone, makes it a magnificent accompaniment to rich meals or the centrepiece for any wine collection.
