Tuscany
Tuscany, a picturesque region in central Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest wines. With its rolling hills, Mediterranean climate, and rich cultural heritage, Tuscany offers a perfect combination of terroir and winemaking expertise. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have become synonymous with excellence and tradition.
One of the most famous vineyards in Tuscany is Antinori, a family-owned winery with a history dating back over 600 years. Their wines, such as Tignanello and Solaia, have achieved iconic status, showcasing the region's commitment to quality and innovation. Another renowned vineyard is Castello di Volpaia, known for its exceptional Chianti Classico wines that beautifully represent the Sangiovese grape.
Tuscany is synonymous with Chianti, a red wine made primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Chianti Classico, produced in the heart of the Chianti region, is highly regarded for its balance, elegance, and age-worthiness. Vineyards like Castello di Ama, Fontodi, and Fèlsina craft outstanding Chianti Classico wines that capture the essence of Tuscan winemaking.
The region is also famous for Brunello di Montalcino, a prestigious red wine made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Montalcino is home to renowned wineries such as Biondi-Santi and Casanova di Neri, which produce exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wines with remarkable structure, depth, and longevity.
Tuscany's coastal region, Bolgheri, has gained international acclaim for its Super Tuscan wines. These wines often blend international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with local varieties. Notable vineyards in Bolgheri include Tenuta San Guido, known for its iconic Sassicaia, and Ornellaia, which produces the renowned Ornellaia wine.
Tuscany's diverse terroir also allows for the production of white wines, with Vernaccia di San Gimignano being the most notable. Vernaccia vineyards like Teruzzi & Puthod and Panizzi create crisp and aromatic white wines that showcase the region's versatility.

Vinous (96+)The 2009 d'Alceo comes across as much more classic in style and structure than the 2008. According to Luca di Napoli, the trick to 2009 was harvesting on the early side. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, plums, mint and licorice all take shape in the glass Over the last few months, the 2009 d'Alceo has softened a bit, releasing expressive, floral aromatics, brighter shades of fruit and striking inner perfume, but it remains quite vibrant in the context of a vintage in which so many wines are quite a bit riper in style. The 2009 is a wonderfully deep, resonant d'Alceo that should offer a wide drinking window starting in a few years. It certainly looks like Rampolla nailed the vintage. |

Wine Advocate (95)Made with 100% Merlot, the Castello dei Rampolla 2021 Liù shows a note of spice and dried herb that frame a dark core of fruit. The wine is rich in appearance, but the mouthfeel remains elegantly slender and polished. There is pretty structural softness here that speaks to the spirit of the variety and the sunny brilliance of Panzano in Chianti. Peppery notes appear on the close. This is a release of 7,109 bottles and 20 magnums. |

Vinous (95)The 1988 Sammarco is fantastic. Sweet, perfumed and highly expressive, with a lot of Sangiovese character coming through. Tobacco, iron, herbs, smoke, dried cherries and menthol form a super-appealing bouquet. The tannins are silky, while the lively acidity ensures well-stored bottles will drink well for another handful of years. What a gorgeous wine this is. |

Vinous (97)One of the many highlights in this vertical, the 1990 Sammarco has it all. Sweet, sensual and layered in the glass, with exceptional balance, the 1990 presents a compelling mélange of intense aromatics, silky fruit and phenomenal length. Now a mid-weight wine, the 1990 nevertheless has enough depth to drink well for another decade, perhaps beyond. |

Vinous (94)The 1996 Sammarco is one of the many highlights of the 1990s. The tannins have now softened, but there is plenty of fruit left. Graphite, smoke, black cherries and plums add further layers of nuance. One of the more lithe, mid-weight wines in this vertical, the 1996 is all about grace. I very much like the sense of freshness here. |

Wine Spectator (97)Black color. Aromas of blackberries, minerals and mint. Very subtle. Full-bodied, with amazing concentration of silky tannins and a finish that goes on and on. Monumental Sammarco. Best ever for me. Best after 2005. 3,500 cases made. |
