Alsace

Alsace, located in northeastern France, is renowned for its exceptional fine wines. With its unique blend of French and German influences, Alsace offers a captivating selection of wines that embody the region's rich heritage, distinct terroir, and dedication to quality winemaking.

One of the most famous vineyards in Alsace is Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, known for producing exceptional wines that showcase the region's terroir and commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. Other renowned vineyards in Alsace include Domaine Marcel Deiss, Domaine Weinbach, and Domaine Trimbach, each celebrated for their outstanding wines that capture the essence of the region.

Alsace is celebrated for its white wines, which account for the majority of its production. The region's flagship grape varieties, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, flourish in the region's cool climate and unique soils. These wines are known for their aromatic intensity, crisp acidity, and expressive fruit flavors. Notable appellations like Alsace Grand Cru further highlight the region's dedication to producing exceptional white wines.

Alsace is also recognized for its sparkling wines, known as Crémant d'Alsace. Crafted using traditional methods, these sparkling wines exhibit finesse, delicate bubbles, and a refreshing character. They are produced from a variety of grape varieties, including Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, offering a delightful alternative to Champagne.

While Alsace is predominantly known for its white wines, it also produces exceptional red wines, primarily from the Pinot Noir grape. These reds showcase elegance, finesse, and a vibrant fruit profile. Vineyards like Domaine Albert Boxler and Domaine Ostertag are celebrated for their outstanding red wines that highlight the region's potential for producing world-class Pinot Noir.

Indulge in the allure of Alsace's fine wines and experience the exceptional quality, distinct character, and the region's dedication to crafting remarkable wines. Whether you're savoring a vibrant Riesling, an aromatic Gewürztraminer, or an elegant Pinot Noir, Alsace wines promise a journey of flavors that capture the essence of this enchanting wine region.

Masses of evolution on the nose. Very firm and with so much spine and structure rather than fruit! Very youthful. This should make great old bones – eventually. Very long and for the moment it’s all on the finish.

James Suckling (97)

Very cool, delicate and floral with daring elegance. Not the most powerful wine of this ripe vintage, but extremely refined. A very long finish that is marked by chalky minerality. The way that it literally blossoms in the glass after half an hour suggests that this masterpiece has at least a couple of decades of life ahead of it. Decant if you want to drink now.

As readers know Trimbach's iconic Clos Sainte Hune comes from a 1.67 hectare plot on the Grand Cru Rosacker but is sold as Clos Ste Hune since 1919. The densely planted vines are pretty old (more than 50 years on average), with the oldest planted in the 1940s and the youngest in the 1980s. Bottled, like all the prestigious wines of Trimbach in April 2014, the 2013 Riesling Clos Ste Hune shows a very clear and deep, dusty/smoky, mineral nose which impressively reflects the Muschelkalk terroir. Rich, precise and pure also on the nobly textured and highly elegant palate this expressive and full-bodied Riesling is penetrating mineral and piquant but also very juicy. The finish is extremely long and complex. Very promising and stunningly accessible already. However, this wine won't be in the market before 2019/20.

Vinous (98+)

Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. One sniff (never mind taste) and I was left almost speechless - and I’m not usually one who keeps his mouth shut when I recognize a truly great wine.

Vinous (96)

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least.
