Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Heading towards full purple. While there is plenty of density, there is not yet much detail in the fruit on the nose. On the palate, the darker berry fruit kicks in across the middle, before a more formal raft of tannins. A good solid example of what Clos Vougeot should be. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2024. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from vines planted in 1933 and 1954, though remarkably, Sébastien told me that one parcel was a fruit orchard as late as 1964. The classy bouquet of mineral-rich red berry fruit, graphite and undergrowth aromas reveals just a hint of morels in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, a very elegant, refined style and a linear finish. Understated and classy. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of dark berry fruit, crushed stone and touches of truffle and iodine. It just bursts from the glass. The palate is very ripe and sweet on the entry, displaying a lot of sucrosity and a very vibrant finish laden with cola-tinged black fruit. It might just be a little too much for my palate, although I suspect it will be very seductive. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru has a delineated, succinct bouquet, the 25% whole bunch seamlessly integrated with blackberry, briar and faint traces of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and nice focus, leading to quite a strict, linear finish. I can imagine this requiring cellaring for several years before it loosens up. Fine salty aftertaste. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru showed just a tiny reduction on the nose but one can still discern the flinty red berry fruit underneath, and hints of pressed rose petal. The palate is well-balanced with crunchy black fruit, slatey, and quite mineral, that the reduction might accentuate. Persistent on the finish. Vinous (93-95)The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru comes from vines planted in 1936, and was raised in three barrels this year (two of them new.) It has a clean, precise tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, raspberry preserve, pressed iris and subtle undergrowth, almost peaty aromas. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Medium purple. There is very little nose initially, needing teasing out, but refined, certainly. Thomas Collardot thinks the 2023 is better than 2022 because of its subtlety and I can certainly see some of this quality in the mouth. Wavelets of fresh red berries, just a little pepper and lacy detail. I will settle on parity with 2022. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024. |
